  1. Ralph I think you put the gear in the wrong way round, I have seen this done before and it locks everything up and goes bang when you try and move it, it happened to one of my old vehicles when somebody (not me!!) had the gear out to check the splines. The gear will physically go in onto the shaft either way around but one way works and one way causes an expensive bang
  2. I just had a new radiator fitted to my 110 yesterday (moral of THAT story - do not believe the story that synthetic rope doesn't spring back and I have a hole through my radiator from a winch hook to prove that it does!!!) and I took the opportunity to fit some metal bungs into the top of the rad and the thermostat housing, they have been sitting on top of my fridge for a few months "pending" and it seemed a good time to put them in since the coolant was out anyway. First impression is that as they both leak (pink stuff on the rad and the thermostat housing) the immediate benefit of replacing the old plastic ones seems a bit vague! They don't leak a lot (a pink stain and a few drips on the thermostat housing) but any coolant leak is too much for my liking. What do the genuine old style radiators use under the brass bungs - do they have a copper washer, fibre washer, or just metal to metal? These are as tight as I dare. I am a bit wary of fitting a copper washer between two bits of aluminium and then sitting them in a hot wet liquid - might cause electrolytic corrosion or would the antifreeze mix stop that? - anyway I don't think the old LR brass bungs have a washer under them but I don't have an old rad to check that - can anybody confirm please? A fibre washer might be the other possibility - if I can find one the right size, which is not guaranteed around these parts... in fact it is more likely that I won't find any! Otherwise I will have to go back to the old plastic ones to be safe. Ta
  3. here you go http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=30857
  4. It's already been covered on LR4x4 somewhere, not sure about your question though
  5. I have never had much success with trying to boil thermostats and for the cost of a new one (genuine part is about a fiver, don't bother with anything else) by the time you drain the coolant and take it off you might as well just replace it anyway.
  6. Not a problem I have heard of, it would probably be limited to the Dizcovery 3 as it has a plug-in towing arrangement whereas most others are bolted on
  7. It might be possible to fit it, but I don't think it would make much difference except the engine might stall more easily
  8. Still no problems on the moon - as zippy as usual
  9. Quite a few ... you could work it out (more or less) from VIN numbers if you can find the change points in a parts catalogue. I think you're talking roughly a couple of hundred thousand as IIRC they started from vin serial 900000 and presumably ran up to 999999, and then a new range started at 700000 and my D2 is 758xxx so that would be about 158000 of them and mine was nowhere near the end of the 02 model year as it was built in about January 02 I think.
  10. Fair point perhaps but: 1) The word "allegedly" crops up quite a lot 2) It appears to be true anyway according to those who have looked into it...? I must admit the same thought crossed my mind but as it appears to be correct I guess there is nothing to worry about. As for opinions on the said vendor, well everybody is entitled to an opinion even if they are talking bllx
  11. I haven't had any problems all the way down here. Maybe you lot are too close to the server
  12. The filter is the same part on the V8 as on the 300Tdi so yes in theory it should be possible to fit one.
  13. Let me guess - the money from Si was poorly photocopied and tinted orange as a special thank-you-in-kind
  14. Has yours got the digital display fitted in the centre with the automatic temp control or is it just a basic one with rotary heater controls and no aircon, a bit like the old Discovery? The Td5 has a timing chain, not a belt, so no changes required
  15. 200s are different but I am pretty sure the turbo/manifold on a 300 is interchangeable The engine number can provide a hint as to the origin, what is it? I don't think it will matter though, and the e/no isn't definitive!
  16. It needs modifications but I am not sure about them being "easy" - the gear lever is in the wrong place, I guess it is possible to swap everything over but I don't know about it being easy...
  17. You didn't mention the war or something did you?
  18. When I win the lottery that would be me
  19. Yes the flange should fit (you may need to change the oil seal for the other type depending on what is fitted), and yes your driving style needs adjusting
  20. Not to mention on here at 15 quid less see http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=3945
  21. Yes it will fit - we got one from Equicar a while back, from a Discovery, and put it into a Defender
  22. Maybe the regulator is jammed closed, not sure what happens then
  23. We check it by taking the oil filler cap off and checking if the rockers are a'rockin' - if all is still the belt has gone. You won't likely damage anything else if the belt snapped with the engine running & vehicle moving it will already have done several dozen or even several hundred revolutions so everything that is going to, will already be nicely bent into its "untimed" position I don't know about 200s but 300s almost never need anything apart from a fistful of pushrods, maybe a rocker or two, and new rotator caps - we almost never take the head off 300s.
