  1. The obvious advantage to me seems to be what FF says, you can control it with summat other than the clutch.... For me a straight PTO would be no use at all and in fact I'd not even go back to a wired remote, try setting a KittyGripper without standing next to it if you are on your own, there is quite a lot of walking back and forth and swearing.... with it the way it is I hold it and pull it into the ground until the winch stalls in high range (which is usually the spade pretty well buried) then go back, change range, get in the vehicle and drive assist if required. I suppose it is probably easier to make a pure PTO that can run all day in terms of not needing oil coolers and stuff for continuous operation, which you would with hydraulics, but I think the advantages of a hydraulic one would outweigh the disadvantages?
  2. Succumbed to the temptation of making another lot of KG's have you Nige?
  3. So that was a "No" to the loan request then ...? Actually I haven't damaged my KG for ages, not since I "modified" the spade with a standard welded down the spine. come to think of it I haven't been stuck since before Christmas which could also explain that
  4. The bill will be in the post Glad the problem has been cracked anyway
  5. No it didn't I was drinking coffee though, not eating chips I was thinking about having a holiday this year to coincide with Billing but it seems a long way to go to stand in a piddle (sorry puddle) of P&&&
  6. There's one sold here called Bars Seal which some people swear by, apparently will fix leaks that Radweld won't even look at...
  7. IIRC RedIbex (and maybe other ibexes) uses a pair of motorcycle footpegs for the "horns" to wrap the rope round. An A-bar would provide much the same facility, thought about fitting one partly for that reason though I rarely have to do 2 recoveries in quick succession unless I really screw up!!
  8. Mmmm a good point You don't want a lot of run on when you're raising and lowering this either (or a dodgy brake) A Husky would be the only commonly used electric I'd consider comparable to the MM for this sort of thing. The 8274 was too unpredictable IMHO, but as said numerous times before, beats most things hands down for challenges. "Go" and "Stop" meaning "Go" and "Stop" is important.
  9. Yeah the price guide is for the fibreglass one, I've already got a fair idea of the RIB that's available, its a reasonable price for what it is just more than I am looking to spend! Fg ones seem to go from next to nothing to a hell of a lot, which confuses me a bit! Thanks - I'll have a better look at RIBnet over the weekend cheers
  10. TJ101 very very nice can I have it please B) Looking at something else at the moment, an all fibreglass boat, 5.8m with an Evinrude 140 on the back, went out for a quick blast in it last night and it'll do about 40 with two not exactly lightweight people in, a little faster with only one in apparently, the owner had it up to nearer 50 after he offloaded me he said (cheeky bugger!) but at just under 40 it was quite "slappy" even over pretty small waves. Not sure how old it is but estimate probably somewhere between 10 and 15 years. Anybody like to PM me with what they think would be a reasonable price for something like that? complete with home-made trailer, small aux engine (4hp I think) and some other bits and bobs, anchors etc, instruments giving speed/depth/distance. I know what he wants for it but I just want to know what others with more experience would pay for something that age and size. My other option which might be available locally is a 5.8m RIB with a 115hp Johnson outboard but it's only a couple of years old I think and I think the guy is going to want too much for it (for my budget anyway) though I haven't spoken to him first hand yet. Really a question of whether it is more economical to get something here that I can see, or get one in the UK and ship down (shipping cost ~£1000 minimum) and not know anything about it. Thanks Edited to say anybody got any comments on the pros and cons of an all fibreglass hull vs a RIB....?
  11. Yeah that's one thing I don't like about them Ralph I'll be sticking with BFG's, ideal for what I need here
  12. mmm all very well till a 6" high wave comes along undercarriage digs in and blat.... I see what you mean though Impressive but still not very sensible IMHO
  13. I haven't measured the MM and I have no idea what "full load" is as I've never found anything yet that will stall it or even sound like it is coming close, but it certainly appears to be the same line speed regardless of load and regardless of engine speed with the ZF74 pump.
  14. Ignore what is on the Kumho site - as far as I know they will replace the sizes the 834 is in so should include 225/75R16 265/75R16 238/85R16 30x9.50R15 31x10.50R15 31x11.50R15 33x12.50R15 those are the sizes we sell in 834s anyway, there are probably others in fact the tyre dealer was telling me they are doing some of the bling 17in and 18in sizes for other vehicles but I wasn't interested in those so didn't get details
  15. Cluck cluck cluck cluck cluck cluck cluck cluck cluck cluck cluck cluck Actually I agree with you 100%, trying to break something is probably not a good idea
  16. That is unbelievably dangerous IMHO I'm amazed the aircraft didn't flip and plough in nose first!!! Rather them than me is all I can say!!!
  17. Best is either of mine i.e. a 300Tdi Defender (any variant) or a V8 auto Discovery for comfortable cruising Worst is anything with independent suspension and too much electricity, I think that sums up the cream of the cr&p they are producing now
  18. cheers fisha I used to run 834s in 31x11.50R15 and I liked them too - just that I wanted a set of alloys for everyday use so they went in favour of BFG 265/75R16s on a set of free alloys I "acquired" for -£20. We sell shed loads of them at work, they don't last as long as a Grabber or BFG but at 2/3 the price people don't mind that at all - they are really popular here and I would go as far as to say they are a premium tyre just at a budget price. My thought on the new one was that the side lugs didn't have enough space between them and would probably clog up too easily, and that the centre bit was a bit too wide and again not enough void, looks more like a tyre designed for rock crawling to me, but I guess as the 834 is on the way out we'll have to suck 'em and see just ordered some anyway so I'll see what they look like when they arrive in a few months.
  19. I think the official figure is 75kg or something, quite low. Prob less than that photo anyway But in reality it is how long it is up there for and what sort of roads you are traversing - you could probably put half a ton up there for a short trip on smooth tarmac but if you drove across Africa like that your roof would be reduced to a number of components fairly quickly!
  20. Has anybody used the new Kumho KL71 mud-terrain, that is replacing the old 834 pattern? I don't want them myself but sell tyres at work so just after any feedback on whether they are any good or not - they look more like a rock crawling tyre to me than a proper mud terrain but just wondered how they perform - anybody use them or seen them in action? To me they don't look as good as the old pattern nor a BFG/Grabber but many want the cheapest MT they can get and Kumhos are pretty much the cheapest around. Thanks Stephen
  21. I think the book says 10 or 15 minutes to discharge the airbag system capacitors but I usually give it half an hour to be sure... No idea how to set one off, you can get proper things but I don't know what voltage is needed. I guess if you plug them into an electric fence energiser the 8000 volts coming out of that ought to do the trick
  22. Can just see it now skreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeechthumpBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANG mmmph mmm mmmpph hlp mmmmph mmmph urk Later on the bit of paper says "Cause of death: Asphyxiation by multiple airbags" But seriously I hate to think how much it would cost to replace 8 x Toyota airbags, we all know how much Toyota bits cost just for oil filters and stuff
