  1. I am sure this is a Cummins engine (ISB 3.9/Pacar) and I have seen a few bent valves on these engines and the bigger ISC engines. While you have the head off check the valves, if all OK put it back together with a new pushrod (that is what I would do anyway!) Cummins will rip you off for a new engine. When I worked for them I saw them do it for a leaky injector on a bus engine, more fool the bus company!
  2. When I last heard of this problem on a TDI engine it turned out to be the injector pipes belive it or not. An extra clamp or two fixed the problem, worth a look even though I realise they are on the other side of the engine to where you think the noise is coming from. I remember this friend driving around for ages with his bonnet off to find this problem! The only other suggestion I have is are you absolutly sure you have not got any exhaust leaks from the manifold/turbo area which can give some funny metallic noises, especially on V8s Toby
  3. We used to carry Irish diesel (green), red diesel and road going diesel (amongst) other products on coastal tankers for a while and we could not change the products in the tank without tank washing first for this very reason. Toby

  5. I had one in a 90 and it was a fantastic engine, pulled like a train even with high ratio transfer box. It was very economical as I remember at the time I was regularly driving from Devon to Glasgow and only had one fuel stop per trip, may be something to do with the 1.22 transfer box and 265 tyres. As already said parts are hard to come by in this country, but you rarely need any parts other than oil filters which are easy to get. Toby
  6. I used to work for Cummins and the 6B could easily put out 350 hp from what I remember, but after 215hp you need the inline bosch fuel pump. You need a big charge air cooler! Avoid the later electronic ISB engines as they are pants and need regular electronic injector changes. If you want decent power/torque go for the C series (8.3L) or an 855 (a cracking 14 litre engine) Toby
  7. I have a mantec raised air intake with a mushroom top on a 4.2 V8 and have not noticed any noticable performance drop, or drop in fuel consumption. I know there must be due to the air restriction, but I would have though it would be negligable on a 200 tdi. Were Mantec raised air intakes with mushroom tops not used by LR as genuine parts, if so I would have thought they would be fine? Toby
  8. The wife has just been looking at loads of threads on mumsnet and cannot belive what a talked about subject this is!! There are many references to this forum and many Mums that actually support the Land Rover obsessed husbands, I am impressed! As has been said by mike080381, children cannot sit in the sideways facing seats until they are taller than 135cm or 12 years old, this sort of gives us a couple of options. Buy a 110 or get a couple of forward facing seats for the 90. While I would love a 110, I am know I would not get one in the sort of condition I would like for the budget we have so that sort of ends that option. The other option is forward facing seats in the back of the 90 (it is not an everyday car, so practicality is not top of the list!) like the new tdci 90s. Apart from Exmoor is there anyone who does suitable forward facing seats as other than LR? Just want to compare prices etc. The other question with forward facing seats is where would the dog go, as he also likes going out in the landie, Is there anyroom between the seat back and back door?   10. Morning I have a 1988 V8 90 county with the sideways facing rear seats. Just wondered when legally I can carry children in the back? My son loves going out in "landie" and unless we do he gets very upset! The slight issue is the wife has to sit in the back, which she is not the happiest about! I am not going to rush out and sit him in the back, but would like to know legally when we can start thinking about it. For some reason only the forward two rear seats have belts so he would be restricted to these seats when the time comes. I seem to remember sitting on the rear bench seats of a series 2a with no belts and sometimes an open back from a very early age and don't suppose anyone considered that wrong when I was younger!   13. Anyone know where I can get some new gauge bulb holders for standard 90/110 (1989) gauges and some VDO ones? Nobody seems to do just the holders. Mine seem to have got hot and brittle and disintegrated! May change the bulbs to LEDs to stop the heat build up in the gauge - anyone done this already and can suggest suitable ones to fit my gauges?   14. I have never had a squealing problem from any pads that I have fitted, however I always fit anti squeal shims (I make my own out of brass shim) but sure you can get them from Bearmach. Some pads are hard rubber backed to stop the squealing, but cannot remember which makes! Incidentally my callipers are 110 (the big piston, and big pad) not that it makes any difference. Toby

I have to agree with the anti Greenstuff people, I had a set on the front of my V8 90 and thought the brakes were awful cold and hot, what worried me more was on the motorway in the wet nothing seemed to happen straight away on brake application then they grabbed like hell. I have since changed back to Mintex and have had no problem and they were much cheaper. I did think the calipers had something to do with the grabbing, but these were rebuilt with stainless pistons and new Lockheed disc's with the Mintex pads in the brakes were really good. So I thought give the Greenstuff pads another go, so I put them back in for a couple of weeks - they were still bloody awfull, so they are back on the garage shelf. The greenstuff pads are bloody expensive and Mildly miffed right off I have not worn them out! I only bought these as I used to used Padgid pads and they were brilliant - soft on the disc's and braked really well. Then they stopped making that pad and I was convinced about Greenstuff. Now I would stick to Ferodo, Mintex, Lockhead, etc and forget the EBC expensive ones. This is my opinion anyway. Toby
  16. My centre diff thrust washers are yellow metal (ie copper/brass) I have just had to renew mine as they were wafer thin and the new ones were also yellow metal and not hardened steel. The first set lasted just under 200k so slightly more than a few revolutions! I would have thought hardened steel thrust washers were have worn the gears and diff housing.
  17. I can confirm they are 24 spline and will happily take photos of the half shafts out of my 1988 axle when I get home if it helps? They are readily accessible, ie sitting on the workshop floor! Toby
  18. Both my 90's had 24 spline 4 pin differentials fitted in the back axle from the factory, one is 1987 and the other is 1988, both also had drum brakes. All V8 90's had this and stronger half shafts (not sure how much stronger!), V8 90 half shafts can be made to fit a later axle, by (if memory serves me right) machining 11mm from the outer end and remachining a new circlip groove which I have done for spare on my existing disc braked axle (1993 discovery) Toby
  19. TBN stands for total base number. High TBN oil is used on engines that do not have oil changes such as big marine diesels. The idea is you top up with high TBN oil to neutralise the acid formation in the oil. One thing to remember is that to do this you regularly need to top up the oil system or sumps in our case. I used to add about 2 to 3 hundred litres per day per engine. Toby
