  1. Hey, Im in abit of a pickle, having just bought a discovery in Sydney and I have just discovered that the rear diff is past its best to say the least. Its whining on over-run badly. Now, I have found a axle from a series 2 for sale locally and I was wondering does anyone know if they are the same as mine (a 1994 300tdi)? Any comments would be great! Many thanks, Hugh
  2. I would be leaning towards the ignition switch. I had the same problem with a britpart one that I fitted that left the starter engaged. Did wonder why it felt sluggish! A push button start removed any risk of it happening again. H
  3. I fitted the thir strip on the inside. Had the same problem when I did mine. H
  4. Im intrigued.....at the risk of sounding contriversal in my experience Irish LRs have less rust but mechanicly alot poorer than UK ones. The quality of serviceing is often alot poorer..... H
  5. Hey, Ive a dormobile and I bought it secondhand. I would suggest/recommend them. I would have thought that if you were to hang/add a second layer on the inside. Maybe carpet, this would help with the condensation and also add a layer of insulation. I got mine complete with roof from what I think was a 60s/70s land rover. I had to renew the canopy, repair some of the glassfibre, replace the windows and rubbers and then I refitted/fabricated it onto a 110 roof. Im very pleased with it. Since I got mine I have seen 2 others in similar condition for £250. I personally think the dormobile ones are expensive new but I was prepared to put some time into overhauling mine. I think Ive spent roughly £750 doing mine including buying all the parts etc. Hugh
  6. im trying to see what you could get out of it if you broke it.....very little I would have tought..... H
  7. Im interested in this thread....Im hoping to travel to Auz in the new year and am hoping to either buy a disco or a early range rover (3 door one). From the adds, 75-80% of the discos ive seen seem to be automatic so that should rule out the fork failure problem. Otherwise there seems to be quite a selection, with the ratios being reverses as there are lots more V8s for sale out there than TDIs. H
  8. something that was suggested to me in a similar situation was to get a 4" nail or punch and use that to tap the bolt round. It takes time but once its free you may then be able to get it out ennough to get a vice grips onto it. H
  9. that drivetrain picture of the HUGO is amazing! H
  10. Hey, It depends on where you are! I take it that if you were back in the Uk you could redo the whole area and thats what I would suggest, but the extent of work to do would depend on facilities and competancy of welding. To get it strong would take time. H
  11. thanks all. Im glad that others agree with what im thinking. I'll have to try and get another set. I'll have a look and measure them too. H
  12. Hey all, Ive bought a set of springs off someone secondhand and I was led to believe that they were 110 heavy duty ones. I wanted to fit them to my 110 csw as a replacement as the boge selfleveler is weak (not working) and I tend to carry a fair amount of stuff around in the vehicle too. Im also working towards comverting it to a Dormobile. Now the problem is that when I fitted one this evening, it looked to be way too tall and I fitted it by jacking up the corner, taking the shock out and jacking higher with the highlift till I could get the spring out and the replacement back in. Now when I brought the jack back down, the settled position was beyond the reach of the shock (it would need to be longer). Basicly does this sound right? There are no identifying patterns apart from that they are yellow/rusty. Are there any identifying markings on OME springs? Any thoughts would be greatly apreciated. Thanks, Hugh.
  13. You will need extended brake lines though and some dislocation cones if you are going to use the +2" shocks with standard springs. I ran this for a while on my 90 but got rather annoyed with popping springs back in after axle twisting sections! H
  14. its random comments like that that make coming on forums incredably entertaining! H
  15. Hey, ive had similar problems with my lhd 300tdi 110. ive just had to rearrange the mounts fpr the shafts and i think that i can just get it to fit. H
  16. its certainly a bitsa bitsa truck!
  17. Could you not wait till its in the vehicle and then put it in a high gear, have someone put their feet on the brakes and try then? It should shift then! Risky I know but if you know the rest is ok.... H
  18. Im having the same debate as I seem to hear that Africa seems to be one long stream of curroption, while south america less so. Unfortunately I dont speak spanish which at the moment might mean that I'll go south initially and then maybe ship from south Africa to south America. It does depend though on how much money I can get together. I know of someone that recently did the trip from South Africa to Ireland in 36 days sor fun which kind of sounds like more rushing than anything else. H
  19. Shell Rimula is a very good engine oil. Its very hard to get up in europe unless you can buy it in bulk. I was told to use it by an ex transport manager that had over 200 trucks on the road and some of them regularly hit one million miles before being sold. He also never had to order a engine rebuild that was attributed to engine wear. I buy it by the barrel but change it roughly every 5-7k km, but this occasionally ends up as 10k km with new filters every time. H
  20. Id rank swapping the body as slightly harder as ive never done that but they're probabily about the same. Were you going to swap the engine over too? H
