  1. Don't just do 8274 spares Part number 21012 available at £70+vat Not cheap but........... Jim
  2. Most of the people i have spoken to that would/will race in Africa seem to be looking at it like this......... Any event that they might enter is smaller than the Dakar and in itself will probabley have little if any media attention, and then only in offraod publications. The chances of meeting/being targeted by ANY Mildly miffed of bloke/terrorist with a gun is slim, and if your moving, even less......... So it seems that the general feeling is go for it........... Or at least until somebody else gets shot up ? Jim Ps: "find the baddies, cut their heads off and bury the bodies in a pig skin - no virgins for you in heaven Mr badboy" Sounds like the closet thing to a plan i've heard in ages
  3. The biggest question still remains Would you enter an event/trip in Northen Africa this year? Food for thought? Jim
  4. Not a dumb question at all. Yes you can swap cylinder heads, they use the same head gaskets and push rods, however you will need a 300 rocker shaft and rockers as well as rocker cover and gasket. I can not remember for the life of me whether or not yo have to change any of the stud arrangement for the inlet/exhaust manifolds, but i am sure you do not. About ten years ago there was a situation where (I can not remember which) that one or other of these heads was not avaialable and Landrover actually advised and dealers carried out this conversion. Same as when the LT77 gearbox went on back order and dealers where fitting R380's into 200 Discoverys to fill the hole while they waited for LT77's to become available again. Dave Alwright used to run a 300 with a 200 head, or was it the other way round? I can not remember. He loved it. Jim
  5. I think you are touch under estimating this one Jez. Do not forget that Defender bulkheads are handied, as are the steering boxs, steering box pipes, Pandard rod fixings, Dash board facias etc............ Not quite the ten minute job it used to be in Series motor Maybe 20 fags and a whole pack of bisciuts for this one Jim
  6. Service the beast while your at it. Sorry for the shameless plug, but we offer replacement seal kits, uprated brake shoes etc... Twinmotor conversions, uprated mainshafts etc Oh, and drum end bushing all on the shelf. Check out www.gigglepin4x4.net Jim 01732 463600
  7. Mate, you require therapy AGAIN Jim
  8. The reason, or some of the reason for the cancellation was the murders of 4 french tourists that where following the proposed Dakar race route. They where murdered on the 24th of Dec, there killings have been atributed to supporters of 'you-know-who' These terrorist have threatened the organisers that more deaths will follow if the race takes place as scheduled. Very, very sad. Motor sport is motorsport and loses during racing is one thing to contend with, but Guys with guns and chips the size of houses on both shoulders armed with RPG's and AK's is quite another. I hope they catch the B*stards that ruined those families lifes forever. Jim Ps: I wonder what will happen to the many other events that run every year in Northern Africa?
  9. Used to use Master pull back in 2001. Lovely rope, but has one MASSIVE problem. When damged or snapped it can not be repaired in the field easliy and the result is that the outer sheath then bunchs and causes lots of problems Makes a fantastic pistol crack sound when snapped Used them all. Period. I now use and fully trust PLASMA 12. My rig, 125ft of 11mm. Jim
  10. You could always use the 90 ? Bring it in a box, take it for a walk. Give it a chance to breathe and relax in the countryside............ Jim Ps: Sorry Will could not resist
  11. We played with this about 18months ago, but decided not to produce it as at the time it would have been cost prohibative, plus the twins do not suffer with the overrun troubles of the single motor winch. Thus it was decided that people would not want more electrics.........? It did work very well once it was sorted. Still got a motor kicking around here that was used for testing it..........Somewhere If you can do it cheap enough, go for it We would try them. Jim
  12. Nice tits Got Diesel in the Sump? Also check the fuel manifold as these to can draw air, no real way of testing other than visual. We had a similair problem about two years ago, turned out to be a faulty fuel pick up in the pump. Diagnoised by filling the tank to the brim, problem stopped. Pump replaced, job done. But with this one? Why? or what makes you think you have air in the system? TD5's are fuel fussy if they have air they usaully won't run. Start with the basics. Do not trust diagnostics as GOD, use common sense. First thing disconnect the air flow meter and test drive and see if problem perists then start on the fuel side. Does the vehicle crank for an excessive period before starting? Has the vehicle just had any major work? Jim
  13. Use Richards they know what they are talking about and will give you what you want............ Not what they think you need 10 out of 10 for product, service and cost Jim
  14. Ben Hollis won................. The rest i am unsure, but i am told it was close Jim
  15. Agreed Which is why i choose to use faster (+13, +25, +40% ) gear ratios and 24v through 24v in this country. Personal choice is everything. So do not be put off trying something you would not normally do, if we don't try different things and approaches we would still be using hand winches. ALL winches (if they work) are worth there weight in gold, so is experimentation. So go and have a play see where it takes you. Hydraulic or Electric is like saying Labour or Conservative, the only difference you could chuck the later in the ocean and no one would give a damn LOL Jim
  16. Do what....? But you can do maths
  17. I LOVE READING THIS STUFF IT IS VERY FUNNY. Reality............ All the top Aussie teams run 24v through 12v motors. Most expect a life expectancy of somewhere around 18months to 2 years from there motors. Tjhe difference is they service there motors regularly, blowing out the carbon dust etc... There winching is very voilent and extremely hard. The reason they use 24 through 12 is that it is like Nitro charging your winch, it will pull like hell and never give in and at great speed. What actually kills the motors is over revving. This usally occurs when winching cable out of load. The Aussies have got over this by using free spool systems, however there are people that don't. Paul Wightman has been running 12v Xp's with 24v going through them for over a year with no troubles and they are still has fit as the day he fitted them. The only really usefull bit of info in this thread so far is the person that wrote "Flat batteries kill motors" this is correct. Three of our Twins have just done the Rain forest challenge unfortunately all the teams had to be rescued and 50 cars left in jungle due to severe monsons and flooding, but those using 24 through 12 suffered no problems and were amazed at what they where having to pull through just to stay out of danger. So there it is, Yes you can. But do remember to pulse the out button if you are paying out. If you want to see how quick they are i recommend watching the Alpine challenge 2007, where almost all the cars were using twin motor setups (either ours or Wazzas) resulting in 5 of the top 6 places for us and ALL including the rest of the top ten using 24 through 12. Doing stuff that most would call impossible and almost ALL will never do. Waiting for the fun to start Jim Sorry forgot to say............. The motors do not get over hot doing this either, we have found that they stay cool to medium temp 125ft long pulls However if the batteries get low.......The heat builds up very quickly. I have run 24 through 12 myself many times, but i must tell you that i have destroyed motors by over revving them. I however have NEVER destroyed one by over heating or burning out. Jim
  18. Ooops Every days a school day Jim
  19. Matt Lee's comp racer is hydraulic drive, it's very fast. Thats all i know. Look forward to seeing them axles on the Disco Jim Ps: If you did go full hydrualic drive then you could have a proper winch Pss: Cogs are now ticking
  20. The owners name is Giles, The vehicle is a Blitz, it has a 4litre v8 under that little bonnet and is very very small......... Great vehicle As Andy says post on Devon and he'll give you the full gen Jim
  21. Does it mean they might now be available in kit form ? Looking forward to seeing how this pans out. Good luck to Dave and crew Jim
  22. I would like to point out that i do not manufacture these items. But The reason they exist is becuase if you fit larger style turrets like Gywn Lewis or Devon 4x4 units they have a 6mm lower plate, thus rendering the orginal turret ring bolt to short if used with the correct locking washers this is pushed to the limit if a seperate relocation cone is used as well. Your point about them being strong enough is valid, but i think you might have missed the point as most still retain M8 fixings, just longer than standard. Some do upgrade to M10, which is great if you run external front shocks and hydraulic bump stops where the shocks used to be I think it's good that different product is available for vehicles that are famous for being different Great rant, wrongly placed Jim
  23. Hi Dan, You should not need to be using a Lathe to fit anything ! I am concerned as to what you are doing, the only bronze bush in the winch fits the large cam gear which you should be reusing? so i am worried that perhaps you might have got something wrong. The mainshaft kit is a direct replacement for ALL 8274 no matter what age. It is obvoius you are no fool, so give me a call i wonder if someone has played with your winch in the past and replaced what should be a bearing with a bush Give me a call You have PM Regards Jim
  24. Ground anchors are a very personal thing, i have many ground anchors and currently own 6 for my own use. Most ground anchors are capable of recovery in most sitiations, however what is key to success with these items is more the driver and co driver. I can teach the basics of winching in probably a day Teach use, skill and deployment of ground anchors and there types ? probably more like a week Pick the unit that suits your particular need and then pratice with it as much as possible. I carry two anchors on my car, a plough type (blades and type are choice dependant on where i am going) but always take a small plate and 5 pins (Pin type again is personal preference and determined by conditions) If Green laning i always carry a PRT which is the best light/medium use ground anchor available, but again that is personal choice. I have not used the new X eng unit but it looks very capable and i hope to try one soon. Hope that helps a little Good luck and happy hunting Jim
