  1. Adrian i love you mate Great bit of co driving very impressed Stefan and Dan were great team mates and Stefan drove rings round me on Sunday, brilliant effort. Xav (Expat) the reason we won is cos your country men kept breaking down and blocking the others (Not true, but a great excuse) As Adrain says a very tough event, Being invite only meant that everyone was trust worthy and that the organisers could set tapes and not fear people cheating or taking shortcuts when marshals were out of sight. In fact over the entire weekend i did not see any evidence of abuse of the rules or tape breakign in attempt of advantage. It was great As for how tough? Chris Jones with his portalled monster running 39' Boggers etc etc managed in one section managed to stall a type 'R' on a double line pull So pretty tough Plus a poor chap in a jeep had a shock when his jeep appeared from on particular Bog less it's front axle That ain't no lie BathTub (Pete) and Chris Jones were amazing to watch and there cars stunning, but we managed to break less kit than they and kept things ticking along. No fun following in there ruts on pram wheels A big thanks to the Organisers inparticular Mr Tomlinson and Mr T Baskil for this stunning (Hard, bloody hard) weekend of driving. Until the next one............. Jim Ps: Did i forget to mention that four Twinmotor winches finished in the top three
  2. Used slime earlier this year and whilist we did not get any punctures the wheel viberations were really bad. We were using 35/12.5/15 Bfg Mud terrians, these tyre do not usaully shake your car to bits, but they do with slime (Other brands are available ) Jim
  3. Andyb and Simon R have raided my music collection Superb Taste The Cramps and Carter usm and some moody Cypress hill for those dark nights............... Great thread Jim
  4. Just fit the bolts facing inwards, then you only have to take of the nuts A lot more simple than reinventing the wheel You do make me chuckle mate Jim
  5. He won't thank me for saying it......... But Simon has bent his track rod when using Dan bars and this small protector more than once. There said it, running for cover DO run hardened bars through the center of the box guard, i have seen standard bars bent often when used with the box guard as they are very exposed on full lock I ran my own box guard for years on my SV and it was ace, but when i built the new car i fitted a Gwyn Lewis unit as i could not make one for the money his cost. Jim
  6. We use a Gwyn lewis guard and Bearmach heavy duty solid bars, an awesome combination We alos do away with the defender drop arm and fit a Disco unit so as we do not have to use the weak swan neck steering damper found on the Defender draglink. We then use a QT steering damper relocator slid over the draglink for the refitting of the steering damper. Works very well Jim
  7. 125ft of 11mm Plasma is the usual recommendation. Don't over fill your drum, big mistake that many make. If you have time why not spool it on unitl your happy with where it sits and work from that ? Jim
  8. Well done to the Bolts Well Done to Chris Ould and Simon Roberts for winning the Series Great drive, Have they ever seen Slindon before? If not even better still Uncle Buck will be glowing with pride Well done to Neil and all his army of helpers for an excellent day out, really enjoyed it. Alan, What a laugh, thanks for putting up with a very unfit driver pretending to be a co driver for you Learnt loads (Like no front locker with a three link don't work in ruts ), and it was great to get to play with other kit and try different styles. And to actually attend an event were Adrian Turner finished.............Well i feel honoured Always great to see lots of people and put names to faces. Just a shame there was not much time to have decent chat. Jim
  9. One other quick bit of advice......... Where Les shows greasing the pin, DO NOT USE copper grease for this application as its expands the internal 'o' ring causing the caliper to sieze after time. Jules, we fit lots of Greens. You will go through more pads, but expect to see about a 15 to 20% difference in braking. They are very good Well done Les Jim
  10. I would not even consider using Jap if you intend to use it in the Uk. If you want really, really strong axles ? Go for Disco 11 cases fitted with Ashcroft NEW cv's and shafts, the cv's are massive and the halfshafts similiar size to Dana. This means you stay on rover gear that is easier to replce if (That is a very BIG if) have a problem. Diffs, are standard rover items, if you are concerned about crown wheel issues then peg it, job done. Keep parts availability simple and you never have to go hunting for parts again. Jim
  11. Just had a '53 plate Td5 Discovery come in for some work Was suprised to see the mileage at 194000 on a vehicle of that age. 450,000 in 3years that does sound a bit high ? Are you sure ? Jim
  12. Don't want to get dragged into this........ However i must advise againist the use of billet (Solid bar) As we have had now three drums sent to us by home built by different people using billet that have bent, not a lot, but they have bent. One was standard length the others extended. As i am sure someone will point out that that it depends on material etc...... But it is just a useful bit of info Jim
  13. Is this the 'For vehicles with ABS' model or the 'vehicles without ABS' model snorkel we are talking about ? As these are different, Which are are you fitting and to which vehicle? I have fitted a great many Safari snorkels and i have say rate them as one of the best produced after market products available for fitting to 4x4 type vehicles. I would have NO problem recommending them to anyone. I agree with Lara on this one i am afarid Jim
  14. There should be a hard plastic cup that the gearlever locates into. Easy to tell if it is not there, the gear lever will feel very loose and vague..... That is more than usual Jim
  15. Love the King cab, Wish Landrover could look to the future when others are so obviously looking towards them Jim
  16. Can't remember the exact figure, but from memory if the head has warped more than 20thou it is a binable offense. Check with Richard at Turner Eng. Jim
  17. You missed your chance, The winch casing for Tony's winch was sold recently on Ebay. He used to use a electric motor with hydraulic assit, he had an amp gauge in the cab and when the motor started working hard the hydraulics kicked in. He has recently changed back to just electric as the new car is only 1700kg Tony is correct the Twin motor set up does away with most of the over run. The 8274 has lots of advantages and as many disadvantages, it's purely down to personal choice. Jim
  18. We were up there a couple of weeks ago and it was still the BMW lump. I thought someone had already Supercharged a TD5 ? Was there not a website somewhere explaining it all? Jim
  19. JBS4x4 club used to run very successful 'Safari days' These where none competive punch events with usually had five special stages (These varyed in difficulty with section 1 being easy, section 2 slightly harder and so on) and where hugely popular with most attracting over 30+ vehicles from Battle scarred full spec comp cars right the way down to straight of the shelf spanking new cars. The punches were set so that they where acheivable for most and some required help or assitance from others in lightly prepped motors, it encouraged friendship and skill, it was great. They stopped due to The organisers of JBS suffering constrictions on there time and the increasing cost of insurance. Crack on James, you will have great fun doing it Just don't do classes, it leads to arguements Jim
  20. Hi Will, The reason you must not use soap is quite simple. The rope is made from thousand of tiny strands and unlike a normal rope, plasma and the like require pressure and friction to hold them together, Thus if you use soap it acts as a lubricant and the rope will lose a massive amount of its strength as it's frictional ability is lost. There you are a nice tech reply and before 8 am
  21. Would love to do this, looks great Who won?
  22. BFG muds are massively under rated, if you are looking for a tyre that has the best of worlds you will be hard pushed to beat it. I have not yet used the Creepy crawlers, however i will be gob smacked if they wear anything like as well the BFG's. Have not got any pics of 35's on a standard truck, but i have got some pics of them on Stefans Trayback (The vehicle with 5 on the side) When these pics were taken he was running BFG muds at 30psi and i was using Simex at 10psi, on the rocks there was no comparsion, the Muds drove circles round the aggressive Simex. http://www.devon4x4.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3509 Hope that helps a little Jim
  23. Very common fault, most likely to be the switch. In fact on the last of the Td5's landrover stopped fitting this unit. Usually the fault occours if it's being raining and water gets in the plug. My advice, do not fit another, leave the plug in the bottom of the filter. And change your filters every service (12000 miles). If you worry about water in the fuel (rare, even abroad) then just undo the drain fitted to the filter and drain some fuel/ water out at your leaisure, just as you would a TDI. One other thing we do,We carefully seal the harness plug to stop water incress in to the loom. Jim
  24. 33' They are quite small Thought the tech guys would have nailed this? Jim
  25. Like your thinking Lewis The need for most centre winches is a direct result of the Dutch Challenge events that are run on very small man made courses and require the vehilce to be supported to stop it from rolling. This lead to an outbreak of center-winch-itish as many then followed suit. I am a firm beleiver in the winch coming out the side, however center winches that have the cable coming out of the roof do tend to suffer with stability problems as the vehicles do tend to 'flick' if the side slope is soft or slippery, hence why most successful teams in Holland have there winches coming out the side not the roof. There are also then those that think that three winches is over the top (Hi ) and that with a bit of thinking the rear can be made to do both jobs, but what do i know And Many of the Dutch have said that they do use all three winches at the same time when competing? So the plot thickens Jim
