  1. Fridge that is the by far the silliest idea ever put on this forum! You can't have kids 5th birthday party in Gosport without the extra traffic causing chaos bring that many landrovers in would probably cause the entire M27 to collapse under the backlog or the country to tip up and Gosport drown. Perhaps we need a new thread of top worst places to have an event . I think Gosport is beat by anywhere within the M25 though.... Actually, is the london to brighton still possible with the LEZ?
  2. Jeez, reading their website I can't help but get so annoyed. Narrow minded ........ well, this ain't the forum for what I would normally say. Nice to that "HRH The Duke of Edinburgh KG KT" the their patron - probably doesn't want anyone driving near his land, he'll be aiming for the horse riders next and walkers. I hope what goes around comes around. Let me know how it goes, I'll be in the outback S
  3. Earliest I will be is 27th Feb over at Malvern, possibly 5th and then 26th. I will have a chat to *another* friend and see if I can get the seats to Alton, but that will be a bit tricky to arrange I think.
  4. Chris, Corby is just up the road, but I am not going near Wiltshire for a bit. I am over to Malvern in the next 2 weeks, there may be someone to relay down from there? Otherwise, probably in Portsmouth in the next month which might help? There is a very outside chance I will be in Salisbury within the month, but I don't expect it.
  5. yes, I wasn't sure about mentioning the way to remove the deeper traces, although I thought welding didn't do it (well not unless you get a LOT of head in to reform the metal structure) but that hammering the carp out of it would effectively remove the compression. I think small claims court would be a shoe in to recover your cash from the seller if the police took the engine, but by mentioning it here you have made it difficult for you to 'not notice' until pulled, if they dug a little. As said, if they can't prove it's stolen, they will give it back, but the rumours I've always heard is that they are a bit lax in terms of returning it in the same state it went. For example they might strip it down to get to the plate and attempt the number recovery, they may just deliver it back in however many pieces it happens to be in then. All very much 2nd/3rd/32nd evidence, and I don't think I have actually met anyone that has happened too and with you being over the water it might all be very different too...
  6. That doesn't look good, I don't know why anyone would want to do that for a good reason As I understand it: They can use an acid etch technique to recover the engine number, as stamping causes a change to the metal underneath. If you can show the history for the car there is a chance that the police will deem it not worth investigating I guess, since they might recover the number, but might have no idea what it came from, if the engine has been in it for some time, if you see what I mean. I'd be tempted to inform the coppers and get your money back from the guy as he has sold a potentially stolen item. If it turns out to be legit, or they don't bother then you could come back to an arrangement. Gutter when you get something like that..
  7. I did wonder about just asking a mod/the mods about the idea, however I thought what harm can it do? I can see the pros and cons of remaining as it and also trying a new way. Also it is only likely to be of any use if the general consensus was to get behind it and think it worth their time. To be fair, until recently I was/am pretty sceptical about wikis, and I don't think I would endorse the idea of a completely open, anyone can do stuff wiki. I imagined that only those members that were deemed 'responsible' would have write access, certainly to any major areas. There seems to be a feeling that I've said the tech archive is no good, this is NOT the case, I just thought it could be better with less effort for the moderators by switching to another format in the longer term. (In fact it is so good I refer others to it a lot of the time and am browsing the cambelt thread as I write, mainly coz mine snapped on the way home ). I was unaware that articles should be proposed for the tech archive, I think I have done so once, and even then felt guilty for taking up someones time, I generally assume that if the mods deem a thread worthy it will go in, otherwise it will be omitted. If I have upset anyone by asking the question/proposing the creation of an LR4x4 Wiki then I apologise, that was certainly never my intention. I just thought that there was little point in this being a question that was asked only of the moderators since the thought was that it was something the whole forum would be contributing too, without the support of which it would be useless as it would increase the workload of the mods rather than decrease it.
  8. Well, a quick search shows Microlaunch Wet roads converter Discovery 1 windscreen fitting ( pictures lost when I moved home ) Double cardan prop files Discovery clutch job (pictures lost when I moved home ) The main reason to suggest it is that the wiki format allows the addition of extra information to a tech article which is not easy or sensible in the discussion thread format. How do I know that page 13 has some vital titbit on how to get the damned discovery 1 early style gearbox fittings back in the motor? That is the difference between writing the original post and chipping in with a "did you think to" or "I found that" kind of comments. To be honest, I hadn't found the wiki link you've posted when I did a quick search the other day, but I'm looking at it now. Technology as a barrier is a fair comment, but you would probably find that someone would take a posting, such as Les H's, and make a page from it without too much fuss, on his behalf. It's another reasons why I like the format of the wiki on the second one, if you create a page and mention WheelBearings then it will automatically create a link to that page, or if not found, create an edit link so you could add it, this is different than editing links etc to get new pages in, it all just kind of works. Administration is took care of to a certain extent by tieing it into the LR4x4 accounts, your edits are tagged to you, and looking at the software it looks like you give different permissions to different users, perhaps only granting write access once a user is trusted. I put the wikis up for anyone who wanted to have a play with, I'm not going to shout, hence why there is no security on it, it might make someone think one way or the other.
  9. Been playing around over the last week with my free hosting over at infernohost and have set up to experimental Wikis if anyone want to fiddle with them. The first is one called wikiwig at LRWiki which is OK, good editor, but lacks easy page creation compared to the wiki in work. The second is better for the page linking, but more basic editor, it also requires more DB priviliges to work so I am running it from a file structure at the moment. It is phpwiki and is pretty open for editing if anyone wants to try it. Having had a look it appears that there is a bridge from the Forum software to mediaWiki, the same engine as wikipedia, called ipbWiki, which would allow us to use LR4x4 accounts to edit and maintain the Wiki. We seem to have a couple of areas that would be better as a Wiki IMHO, the tech archive and some talk in the fab forum about CAD models, it would also be good to update areas of knowledge, a modern Haynes but without the lies. I know it is a bit new fangled, but it could be a great source of information and self sorting too.
  10. Abingdon, the 4x4 show is already there, the venue is probably big enough AFAIK/remember. There is 4x4 track for those who want it, combine with the festival and raise money for charity too. Make Sodbury@Abingdon a proper 2 day event, which makes it easier for those visiting from afar. If the selling was spread out over 2 days then it might also mean less traffic issues. Only issue might the porta-poos which are at Abingdon
  11. discojmz, if microcat is starting up, but you got this message about pricing, it sounds like an issue within the installation, it has started correctly, but won't provide pricing due to errors in the files. Without more info I can't be of more help on it, sorry! Steve EDIT: actually, I remember something about microcat asking me for a conversion factor or something, usually if the date was a month or so out.
  12. What messages do you get? The new one should warn if it can't change the time/date.
  13. I had the water over the bonnet on the 90 at pigeon house lane. You can never figure out when that thing is going to be high, I think it affected by the tides
  14. typical spot for the chassis to go. I'd patch it, unless you happen to have the time to do the chassis swap. We patched a lot more than that a few months back.
  15. Changing the system time will be an administrator action. Not tried any code to do that, though would know where to start. However, might be easier if you choose to run as admin. o right click on shortcut o choose properties o go to the tab marked "compatibility" o tick "run as administrator" This should elevate the process to administrator automatically and allow it to change the system time. NOTE: The microcat program should not be running with admin from doing this but I have not verified this. I'm pretty sure this should do it, but I don't have a vista machine with everything installed to check. I'll have a look over this, but I need to install dev tools to my vista box in the study to check it. EDIT: I've tweaked the exe a bit, it won't work, but it will warn tell you that the time has not been set
  16. If you get a PCI one then consider trying to get one with an external aerial input. The reception around the back of PCs is a bit poor in my limited experience so you might want an external to improve the reception. It's probably more down to lots of electrical noise than placement why they suffer.
  17. If you really think there is too much play you might be able to sort it a bit (this is 20-20 hindsight as I have had my box out for a similar reason). The input shaft has that nose cone thing, if you take that off (and note that the 8mm bolts go all the way through to the oil in the box, so empty it first) then the front bearing is underneath. (there is also a lower bearing, doubtless the race will fall out and make you panic like I did) The race can be replaced with no fuss (I did that), but there is a washer/spacer to take up the free-play on the taper bearing. If you get a new one or pack this out you will adjust the free play on the bearing, just like the wheel bearings, which might help. Sorry no dimensions, but if you have the box already out then this is an easy job. There are two part numbers for gaskets on it, they are the same shape, but no idea if they are the same thickness, I didn't check at the time and just used the one that looked right without opening the other one, so these two may be used to set the free-play, they are cheap though, about 74p each from LR dealer, so get both and see. I really don't know if either of these adjustments will be worth it, but it might be worth a go. If you have excess play on the input then the oil seal in that nose-cone will leak, but the bugger of it is, that the oil travels along the shaft and on to the clutch plate
  18. Slab common ate: my pads my alternator my bearings my power steering pump on an event a while ago. We were driving like looneys (safely I am sure ) but it was still a bit of a shock at the repair bill after a 3 day event. God it was a good weekend
  19. still got the plastic bush doofer on the bonnet hinge? sounds exactly like when that is missing. I think I did a bit of gentle bending of my vent to make it a bit more of a flush fit.
  20. If you have gone through the effort of removing the motor, I would have thought you wanted to fit a brand newie, not sure I'd want to be a month or two down the line and find it gone and have to strip it all down again
  21. There is LR parts in the speke garston area. I dropped in ages ago and they seem to have a decent store with plenty of parts. The guys also appeared to know what they were doing from the brief chat I had with them. Tip for finding them: If approaching from the mersey side: they are just before the bridge on the right, then about 1/2 way down the road Obviously if approaching from the other direction they are on the left, just after the bridge. I don't think the part prices where too bad either, the best bit is that they actually have a shop and it's not filled with bling (well wasn't) so you can find all sorts of things that might be handy
  22. Sounds like a good sticky topic for the T&F forum. I have 6th and 10th Jan at the Portsmouth store. Anyone know when one is for Northampton/Kettering area?
  23. Sounds like what happened to me, I started in first low drove off and switch to second high then ragged it round the block riding the clutch and it was fine. Wish I had done it first as I replaced slave and master first If the motor is still up on blocks then using the brakes to provide a bit of drag would appear a good idea.
  24. I'd like to see a hard top version, I have a 90 cab and it's a PITA, the disco is great coz I just throw everything over left shoulder to store things
  25. Just bought one 'for a friend' No really it is
