  1. You are a lucky man, I have about 6 months of Aus 4wd action which I can give you, I think they probably have all the trailer info you could want and loads of pictures. I can also let you borrow the magazine DVD's, but I want them back. I've back in Kettering today and tomorrow, so maybe we should arrange to meet up. Ali, when do you appear in the mag, or has it already gone?
  2. Check out the hosting linked in my profile. This has links to microlaunch (and saves me posting another link that breaks!)
  3. When I looked at the diagrams for the Safaris I couldn't figure out how to get one to fit with the ABS and mass flow, is that an auto Mark? The ABS is on the other wing on rangies, the auto has the cruise control over on the drivers side. I think you would have to look at make an exit on the side and lead a hose up to a standard safari exit point or for other standard snorkel top. The raised round section just aft of the box is the 200tdi air hole, so a 200tdi snorkel would be entering there. Time to consider another air filter housing and some ducting? probably all stuff you know I guess looking at your collection lr's My other concern was the MFS and how water tight that is anyway ????
  4. Anyone with four land rovers needs to be on the board !
  5. Additionally, the thread over on Piston Heads indicated that the police went and downloaded all the guys posts and used them as evidence against him. It would be best for everybody if the thread was for factual updates from someone who knows what is happening rather than any speculation. I feel very sorry for Gresh and wish him good luck on the case, he already has more than enough to deal with, lets not add to any of his problems.
  6. Saw the shires in the Arena, started searching for FF mobile number while he was talking, but it was on the other phone, so I couldn't see what his ringtone is for the whole show First time I've been to Billing (well the show, I drove past every day last year) and I thought the show area was quite good, was impressed by the amount of effort the likes of Devon 4x4 had gone to. Spoke to the guys on the X-Eng stand, wasn't planning on buying anything, then saw the ground anchor, after hefting it I desperately wanted one, but I struggled to convince the Mrs Best part was the wife took the discovery round while I took the 90, first time off road driving for her and I was very impressed, only one spot of damage which was caused by a nasty side slope without a marshal, I took the 90 through a few minutes later and hoped she hadn't gone that way. A few scratches that should buff out hopefully. Gave the mud run a good go, and managed to remodel a wing doing so Will also be our last Billing I imagine too...
  7. obviously keen to see who is not abiding by thier licencing a CD image may well have a serial no in it, often comes from the writing software, do you mean the installer has a serial number, I haven't had a look at that..... I will have some spare time, so maybe a quick weekend job to poke around then.
  8. Even if you did, you need to ensure the valve doesn't drop down the bore. I guess you can turn the piston so it is at the top for each one as you do it or put compressed air in via the glow or injector holes. try these, but never used them myself: in situ compressor or a fancier one fancy one good luck, I suspect you'll end up taking the head off anyway
  9. I'm not surprised to see another thread like this. From what I have read I like Les, but statements as he has made them will always instigate a reply. Devils advocate: Why do we have an 'international' section anyway? Surely it should be to talk about international variations in land rovers only? Any other topic should be in the defender, range rover etc forum. It's also in an area called "the lounge", well I don't keep any LR in there, and not likely to either, the nature of the forum is that we should only really be talking about how many rivets each LR has in the "lounge" surely. <Serious mode> Perhaps what is needed is an annual vote in or off for moderators. This would indicate if the general consensus disagreed and conversely allow the mods to exercise authority based on validated backing. Also, having rolling moderators, i.e. you are asked to be a mod for a month, would improve the transparency of the system. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? take the wind out of that sail....
  10. I live in the area, so should be able to get mine, large rugby shirt. would be good to get it before you have to post to Oz
  11. I may be floating around on Sat or Sun... Strangely passed a group of Netherland LRs with Billing stickers on heading up the A14 towards M1 at lunch time today. I thought I'd missed it for a minute...
  12. OK, damn your eyes, you have me thinking about taking the 90 across again! 1987 truck cab with a 200TDi in it, roll cage, 8274 winch, 100k miles (160k km) Chassis is OK, it would be good to put a new one on over there. What is it going to be worth? Should I take it in case I use it but also for the cost, I reckon I will get around £3500 ($7200) for it here. It will cost around £1000 for shipping, so am I going to get more than $10,000 for it over in SA or VIC? I thought selling a Personal Import was a loss maker, or is just the rarity of 90's that gets over the issue??
  13. Well, options for the motors went like this: 90 - would love to take it, and after reading Ali's dits over the last 2 years I know it can be done. But... the wife hates it and won't drive it, which means if we went touring it would be me driving. It's also a truck cab, which means I have zero space. I'd have to go soft top or hard top to make it sensible. Finally, I have been driving the discos too much and I really like my comfort, I've turned into a big girl Old disco - seen better days, tempting to do it anyway as I wouldn't feel badly about chopping it about to make a nice off roader. But.... cost of getting it there seems pointless and for the first year or two I can't see me being able to do anything with it. Ali had family out there, we don't have any of that, a few mates in Adelaide, but nothing substantial. So having a car to cater for becomes a PITA. Unless you have loads of support you have to think where will all the stuff go if you take it? New disco - ahhh, the customs are sticklers for length of use and ownership from what I can tell. I bought it in Feb, so we could only bring it out in feb 08. But it is USE as well as ownership, so we would have to stay a bit longer as any trip to oz would count against the time frame, and AFAIK customs want copies of your passport to see when you were out of country, you can cancel off business trips. So we just can't do it on timescales. I would really have taken this with us, it's a 300tdi auto, air con and so would be ideal for a tourer. I am also concerned about the cost and possible availability of parts, though Ali said a few posts ago that availability was good. I downloaded the Nissan Patrol WSM a few months ago and it looks like working on that will be the same as the LRs so I may jump ship to one of those for a tourer and get a disco to make a nice off roader IDC. Since we don't have anyone to help us when we go I think travelling light is the best option, we may end up living in an apartment in the city, we could end up in NT, we just don't really know and having to move loads of extra gear seems like too much hassle. We are thinking of shipping our stuff (read my tools!) out after we have a better idea of jobs etc. One thing I did notice is that if you don't have a VISA most job advertisers don't bother contacting you, the timescale is too long and variable for them to care. I think Ali went across on a spouse visa, which usually takes just a couple of months IIRC, our visa has taken 9 months, without skills assessment, and some of the others from earlier months are STILL waiting, check out british expats time line to get an idea of the wait. I emailed two jobs on Thursday night, one I mentioned the VISA, one I didn't, the one I did got back to me v quickly, the one I didn't still hasn't replied. So after you get the VISA you can start to apply for jobs, it just makes it all so much harder to plan for. Anyway, apart from the 4x4 angle of importing and getting out and about, if you want any info on the visa process give me a PM, we didn't use an agent so know a lot about the process, though ours was fairly straight forward.
  14. Well as the proud owner of a brand spanky new Australian Visa (came on Thursday) I just feel I should chime in I think you numbers are off dougster, get along to british expats forum and do some searching there. Ali has certainly shipped his 90 over but it comes down to what you want to do, I think if you asked he might say that a 90 isn't great for the touring and a disco would be better. I've scrapped taking over any motors for a number of reasons, but none of them are due to cost really. I was quoted £2.5k for a container (20ft) to ship house items over and £3.5k (bumping to a 40ft) if we took the car. Every shipping agent came out the same at the emmi fair went to.
  15. I changed this about 6 - 12 months ago. Job is: Drain the oil, as the bolts holding the nose cone go all the way through (ask me how I know) split box from engine, you will need lots of room, so it is not just a few inches, more like 6 - 10" of space needed to get the nose cone off. Undo the bolts holding the nose cone, and tap and cajole it off. At this stage the input shaft will be wobbly, the bearing on the other shaft is loose, it's all a bit of a bum clencher. Pull the old seal out and put the new one, pretty easy. you may wish to try and get a new steel (?) washer that sits in there, my one was looking worn, but I didn't want to overly fiddle, but this will have a relation to the pre-load, so getting a new one could be a good idea. The gasket used is supposed to be the right one, as this too affects the preload. That is about all, I am pretty sure mine isn't leaking anymore, but difficult to tell as it has done very few miles and I spilt loads of oil due to the bolts on the nose cone, we cleaned what we could, but when it gets hot it will get the last off. You could also consider getting the felt washer from the transfer box flange seal and putting one of those in to stop the oil travelling down the shaft and onto the clutch.
  16. Wife just pointed out to me this show on 12th and 13th July at holcot. Show website For info Holcot is here google map might wander along, depending on where the hell I am.
  17. Got to hand it to Paddocks this week. Did an online order and I made a complete arse of it. I got the address wrong I got the wrong number of items. I emailed them back from the order confirmation, twice, the first time I asked them to amend the address and then a couple of hours later I realised I'd stuffed the quantities, ordering 2 sets of springs, 1 shock and 1 retaining ring (spot the mistake?). To their credit they completely corrected the order and the parts arrived on time. I know they sometimes get a hard time, but in my experience this is not that unusual for the paddocks end of the service, sometimes I've put part numbers in the comments area that aren't on the site and they have been added correctly to the order. The courier company however can crawl into a hole and be eaten by rats for all the good they have been though........
  18. The no 4 injector is a sensor injector for the EDC, is that connected correctly and in the right place, as you probably had the injectors out, it may be that you have broken the special injector as well?
  19. How did you do the clutch? Engine out or gearbox moved? might be a pipe come adrift if the engine has been moved, possible, but unlikely if you did it via the box, but you do move the engine around a little, so perhaps a pipe fractured?
  20. Hmmmm.... the crank has a keyway, so that is easy, looking in WSM the camshaft also appears keyed, it's a bit unclear, but perhaps it was the injection pump that has the issue about the alining of the timing marks that need to be taken care of. it may have been a HBOL statement too...
  21. If you are taking off the camshaft sprocket there is a specific way of doing it in the WSM, you really need to follow it as otherwise it will screw the timing. I haven't done this myself, but I noted the issue when I was doing the timing belt some weeks back.
  22. OziExplorer has just hit V2 on CE. It is a MAJOR revamp of the software on CE and I have to say that it could be THE tool for off roading. I've used Ozi for about 4 years now and always liked it, but the new v2 interface is completely customisable and has so many bells and whistles, for the price it is OUTSTANDING (IMHO). I did give someone (freeagent?) complete maps of the Spain and Pyrenees about 2 years ago, I probably have a backup on disk somewhere, but my trip to Spain is off forever now, so I removed them from my main machine. If you search for EMAPS on file sharing networks you may find ozi maps for the areas you are interested in, I've usually done pretty well. HH and BBC - the software is only $85 AUD... well I guess you need a copy of the PC version too, so all in about $150 AUD ? still pretty good. Sorry, geeky moment, just v impressed by the latest version I've been playing with today.
  23. The guage system is not particulary sophisticated, so I wouldn't use the gauge to fine tune how far left. If you really want to use it to know about that last portion of feul consider whipping the sender out and seeing how much feul is in and bending the rod to get the answer you actually want. The old series I had I set to only accurately read on the last half tank, it would read empty with about 1/4 of a tank left when I started. I've never trusted the defender for this reason. it's a lucas item, with land rover electrical design. don't trust it
  24. Mate bought some hose from hyphose a few weeks ago, he spoke very highly of them and got exactly what he needed. Thanks to FF for the tip off on them btw.
  25. I've done PIC work similar to this, I still have my development kit hanging around which I could knock something up with. I think something like that would be the way to go, as you probably want the switches to be insensitive to taps, so a hold down for x seconds to change type logic.
