  1. when i gravelled the front "lawn" next to the drive (the one the disco in my avatar is on) i dug out to a depth of 4", and then filled it with just scalpings. neighbour compacted it with a whacker plate.
  2. dig it out a bit, get some builders rubble, and dump a couple of ton of scalpings on it - job done. isn't that the same stuff you find lying in the grass verges by where the police set up the mobile speed cameras?
  3. how the hell did that get a ticket last year?? or has it been bathing in the sea for 6 months?
  4. diff lock off, front and rear axles are separately powered (if that makes sense), when diff lock is on, front and rear axles are essentially locked together.
  5. all land rovers are permament 4wd, except for the series vehicles with the yellow and red knobs. diff lock essentially locks the front and rear props together.
  6. they did go under last year - they owed us money after we ordered a chassis lift kit for a vitara, credit card co payed up though.
  7. unless it's a guarenteed for life unit, with transferable warranty, then you are stuffed i am afraid. IIRC the only clutch manufacturer to offer a transferable warranty is Quinton Hazell. Most manufacturers stipulate that the warranty cannot be passed on - looks like you have a bill for a clutch coming up? is the clutch fluid up to level, any leaks from the cylinders? clutch fork replaced at the same time? could be other things, other than the clutch of course.....
  8. this was Hay Bluff on Saturday Evening Gratuitous Landrover Shot
  9. I have managed to get hold of a Midland 38 UK/EU set, gutter mount and short whippy aerial for the disco. Next question is, how do you mount yours? (CB that is) inside the cab area. My first option was on the dash, by the instrument pack, next option was on the side of the centre console by the passengers right knee, or finally on the centre console where the cubby box/bag usually sits in a Disco 1. All suggestions gratefully welcomed.
  10. >click me< memory must be going, they are 9" with 100w bulbs - they have dropped a bit in price though
  11. the ones on the front of my disco (the one in my avatar) were £35 delivered via ebay. 10" diameter IIRC, came with bulbs, relay, wiring and 2 x 130w bulbs as well, cracking lamp for the price, and if one gets broken it's not ridiculously expensive to replace the pair.
  12. i would imagine that the majority of fittings will be m10, the axle one could be m12. imperial fittings haven't been used for years (although being a landrover anythings possible) pipe should 3/16", standard size for most cars/light vans etc
  13. looking at this diagram, the v8 airbox needs to be cut and spliced to fit a snorkel. the easy way is to move the coil, and use a 200 tdi box. it also pays to replace the hose between the box and afm with a better one (i've used one off a Ford Sierra 2.0 DOHC, nice tight seal at both ends, and the correct ish kind of angle.
  14. no idea on the location, although that car looks like an old austin 7/model t type effort.......bit of t cut it will be fine
  15. connector plugs usually melt as a result of a high current, caused by excessive resistance. could be high wattage bulbs fitted, running too many accesory lamps of the main beam feed, or just corrosion of the connectors. H4 repair kits are available from good auto electrical suppliers for a few quid. i suspect the n/s is more prone as it takes more of a hammering from puddle splashes. my n/s headlamp is fogged up, and the reflector is corroding, although i plan to fit 300 tdi lamps at some point in the near future.
  16. Been snowing here off n on all morning, most of it has melted away now though just started with some big fluffy flakes again now though, so fingers crossed for some proper 80's style snow
  17. or nip to maplin and get a bluetooth gps receiver, and tesco for a bluetooth dongle. that's what i use with memory map on the laptop.
  18. you will have to butcher the two systems together, or modify a 200 tdi defender system. when we did one last year, we used part of the n/a downpipe as a sleeve, as the 200 tdi pipe is bigger, and mated the two together under the floor.
  19. special edition barbour jackets and green wellies plus isn't it 20 years of the disco this year too??
  20. http://cgi.ebay.com/LAND-ROVER-DEFENDER-90...%3A1%7C294%3A50 now that to me (being an 80's child) is unbelievably cool, especially as i grew up with them on the telly.
  21. they only work with the headlamps on dipped, and they do guzzle water at a serious rate - tbh i don't think they are that good
  22. I have wired in a mom - off - on switch for the self start capability, but wanted to have two warning lights as well. one green one for when the charge is running, and a red one for when the mom part is active. how do i wire up the lights to work like this - green, on when split charge is live, and red for the jump position? cheers
  23. you may need to use a ratchet strap to pull it into place when you tighten everything as well.
  24. a re map is the way to go, as i have heard of a few chipped motors causing problems with the standard engine management system. it makes quite a difference having it done though - depending on the level of tuning of course. worth it for the torque increases that can be had - especially if you tow a lot.
  25. whatever happens, it will get more and more difficult to "hide" any obvious changes to a vehicle, which has got to be agood thing in one way, in that it will stop all the little chavs in there 600bhp saxo's from adding all sorts of bolt on tat, making them unsafe. on the other hand, it's just going to make it more expensive for the legitmate modders amongst us to make any preferred changes that relate to how we use our vehicles. for example, those of us that like to use our daily drivers at the weekend for laning, and need a 2" lift etc, or those that do a lot of towing and need HD springs etc... those have been illegal to make for about 8 years now IIRC, since they changed the plate regs in 2001. there is a company in Nottingham somwhere that is currently facing a fine in excess of £20 for supplying illegal *cough* show *cough* plates. the man from the DVLA told us this when he came and checked our no plate records. one guy came in needing new plates as the police had stopped him for an illegally spaced rear plate, spotted the front was the same, and slapped him with a £60 fixed penalty notice for them (he was driving a BMW though, so explains a lot ) slightly o/t, my apologies to those concerned
