  1. Hold out for a second hand husky. They can be had for £250 - 300 if you look hard. Go to Sodbury rather than relying on eBlag too... just my 2p Mark
  2. Yep, it's an Mot fail if any part of the when interferes with another part of the suspension... just wind the lock stops out a bit..
  3. The easieist thing to do is to adjust the steering stops. There are two bolts on the body of the swivel housing that stop the wheel moving far enough to hit the radius arms. Admittedly you will lose a bit of turning circle... you will need 2 17mm spanners... Alternately, you could fit spacers or fit rims with a different offset.. both of which involve spending some money. Hope that helps. Mark
  4. Les, sorry I can't be much help, but if you fancy doing a how-to when you're done I would grateful!! Need to do this swap myself once I can find a 1.4 t-box... Mark
  5. Nope, it's just nige... Dave, thanks for your help, it's much appreciated. I wish I was in a position to come and grease your palms to get a new one, but sadly I have to make do with other people's cast offs! [cue vilolins, etc] I have however, this very eveing aquired what I think should be the correct guard for my car, so if anyone wants a slightly modified Early rangie tank guard, let me know (I have the bit I cut off, so it could easily be unmodified if required ) Cheers Mark
  6. Thought I would update this with the photos... I decided that since I wanted it on, I would trim the front edge a bit: The black line I have added on top of the pen line I drew! I took the sides to in front of the extra mounting holes so that the extra mounting option remained: So in the end it looks like this fitted: which to be honest is a bit low for my liking, and I now understand why - the correct guard has another fold in it, as the plastic tank hangs down in different places. Chopping the front off meant that it cleared enough to get it to fit better than before: and but as I said, I do want to be able to tow off this, so I am going to attempt to get the correct guard for this tank... Thanks for the help chaps Cheers Mark
  7. I'm a mod, and I don't consider it spam!!! James, thanks for taking the trouble to post that, and to talk to dave. I have managed to get it to fit, but I am not very happy with it. Since I do intend to tow on it, I am also looking at putting a better solution in place... Thanks for the comments guys. Cheers Mark
  8. Rog, I mde those ones up, but it's hardly what I would call fabriccation, and the lathe didn't get a look in! I cut upwards on the inside of the plates, through the tube (and the bolts) with a grinder and then got a friend to cut the tubes off with a gas-axe. Then I just cut two lengths of tube with a 12mm ID to fit the gap and welded them in. Buy just doing the tube the position remains the same, and you can just put a bolt through to hold the new tube in place while it is welded. Hope that helps Mark ps. The tank guard is going to be attacked with the grinder today, unless anyone shouts with a better idea/offer of the correct unit!
  9. Oh yeah, note that I already had to weld new tubes on cos the old tow bar bolts were rusted into the old tubes...
  10. Honestly, I'd rather not cut it up, but I can't afford to go and buy a shiney new one from Southdown... I am not afraid of the adjustment with a trusty lump hammer, but this really dosen't fit! I realise the holes will be drilled for the previous owners motor, and that I am likely to need to adjust their position, but as it is currently, the sides of the guard don't come high enough to get the holes through the metal! I would like the tank guard on for 7Sisters, but I need the tow bar by easter. If anyone has a disco one and wants to swap or sell, before then, let me know, and I will hold off butchering this one. My opinion is that the front edge of the tank is pretty much out of harms way, so won't lose out on the pretection front. What I am concerned about is losing strength when it is used as the basis for the tow bar... Any more comments of offers of the correct tank guard muchly appreciated!! Cheers Mark
  11. Essentially, would does anyone think there would be a problem with cutting olong where the red line is??? Cheers Mark
  12. I have aquired a set of 285/75 -16 BFG MT's. Is there any point in me trying to run them on the disco? I am currently running 255/70's and desperatly need a bit more ground clearence. The 285's are silly wide, but initial calculations say they come up at just over 33" diameter - ie the same as 235/85s I know there will be gearing issues (anyone got a 1.4 transfer box kicking about?? ) and the bodywork will need some trimming, but will it require flares? In fact are they just too wide for laning, play days and the odd punch challenge that I do? Opinions please... ta Mark
  13. Am trying to fit a Southdown Tank Guard to my Disco... The guard came off a certain other forumeer's rangie, so I know it is not the disco one specifically, but I thought they were the same? However, when I try and put the guard in place, there seems to be a large lump of fuel tank in the way: This is stopping the guard going far enough up: The mounting holes in the side are nowhere near and the fornt end is really very low Note, in all the pictures above, the rear two bolts that pick up on the tow bar mounting points are done up completely. My intitial reaction is to wonder if a V8 rangie has a different shape tank to a 200TDI disco - I can only assume so.. Does the panel think I would be OK to cut the front 4" off the guard, from about an 1" infront of the first fold? I want to use the guard as a tow bar still as well as a tank guard, so I don't want to compromise the strength too much... As an aside, does anyone know what these holes mount to? Cheers Mark
  14. good call. There is plenty of useful stuff in there...
  15. Meant to say that I am using MM2004 - since I have the entire UK on 1:50k but am too cheap to upgrade... does that version accept aerial photographs? Will have to investigate Ozi a bit deeper though...
  16. I prepaation for the Shires Seven Sisters weekend, I have been thining about My Sat Nave... Currently Running Memory Map on my iPaq which works very well... where the roads are mapped. Miketomcat showed me what I think was oziexplorer using a combination of scanned OS map and aerial photos but can I do that with MM? I think possibly not. Can I run Ozi on a iPaq? if so does anyone have the scanned maps/photos that I need to sue with it? Any help appreciated... ta Mark
  17. Sadly that is the only way we could get the horns to fit in, and that took some effort! They need to be flat, or the grille dosn't go back on.
  18. Sorry John ... I thought the question was 'what vehicles would you ban?' so far I have only seen votes for drivers... to be honest if you're an ar$e in a Beemer you going to be an ar$e in a datsun.... Personally I would ban HGVs on local roads at peak times... Mark
  19. Thank you for the replies chaps... I had established that they were BH610321L but I was planning to get them through my local fastener supplier rather than through an LR parts supplier - hnce my question about the size! I seem to remember that the front radius arm bolts are M16 in the Parts catalogue, so I think I will get some M16x100s and see what happens! Cheers for the replies chaps! Mark
  20. Quick question, Can someone tell me the size of the Bolts that attach the trailling arm to the axle on a Disco 1? Thanks Mark
  21. I have cover for myself driving any vehicle with RAC. I have been recovered in the IIa (1968) and in the Disco (1991) with no problems.
  22. For ease of use and installation, etc, I would go with a superwinch EP9 as suggested above. Here's one on my Brother's RRC. Incidentally, this is the same winch as a Come-up DV9000. Huskys are excellent and pretty much bulletproof but they are slow. Warn's are always going to be a reasonable winch, but you will really want a lowline winch (XD9000 or similar) and these have internal brakes which dosn't do plasma any good. Britpart are another rebadged chinese import... Hope that helps. Mark
  23. Clear roof panels are excellent for extra light, but it makes your workshop more like a greenhouse in the summer!
