Awesome job you've done on that arm, looks factory!

I just had a thought ..... Far too late though but thought I'd run it past you lot.

Could the tapered holes have been made by making a tapered drift on the lathe and then hammering that into a predrilled hole that had been heated in the forge?

anything is possible and your suggestion could work but I think the tapered drift would need some supporting bracketry so the drift stayed exactly in position when hammering, ideally one strike only as your going to lose heat over several strikes regards Stephen

Good question, part of my problem is winter, realistically I could start dismantling sid the roach in a couple of weeks, however if we are going to get snow then March and April are usually our worst months and as sure as eggs is eggs it will snow if I rip it apart.....

So I'm looking at getting every thing sorted so it is more or less ready to hit the ground running at the beginning of May

What's left to do before I dismantle ?

Finish off the other rims

Forge a new steering arm( need to make a forge first )

Make one link chassis cross member

After dismantling

Chassis to clean up and strengthen as required

Rear chassis suspension mounts to make (6 mm instead of 3 mm )

Rear coil spring mounts to move back a wee bit

Install transfer box from @Ed Poore ( timeline involved now Ed )

Sort out body work

Fit new seats

Sort out any unforseen issues with fitting axles

I'm sure I will have missed several things out regards Stephen

Two big things off your list now 😊

Cross Member next ?

  • 2 weeks later...

So had a bit play today influenced by @CwazyWabbit and his question

So this was done very roughly

Predrilled piece of 20x50 flat bar

add forge and some tools

20220501_113644.thumb.jpg.4370bdfb4a68d0f43ad842ee17f54a2d.jpg

getting there

finished result is very good a wee bit of lapping and the two parts would go together perfectly,  I must add this process would be easier with two people

You can see the tapered sides

decent fit

 The proof with measurements

so all in all a good idea that can now be filed away for future use regards Stephen

You've probably mentioned it somewhere already but what steering box are you using ?

What made me ask is the length of the drag link steering arm on the axle .

You're making great progress with this whole project , with all the bespoke engineering elements too.

hot forging the taper with a podger was an inspired idea CW :i-m_so_happy:

Just the normal defender steering box

the drag link steering arm is deceiving in the photos, I've worked it so it sits the same height and same position in relation to axle tube as it is on my lightweight at the moment, hopefully it will be ok or I will be looking at some form of hydro- assist

the bespoke elements may be a problem for someone in the future lol

I agree with you @CwazyWabbits idea was certainly inspiring Regards Stephen

Yeah , I thought about it more after I'd posted and realised that it's because you can see it all the way to the king pin where the std. defender swivel housing and arm sort of masks the distance visually.
