Hybrid_From_Hell
Hi all, Have a new super doopery very special dual diaphram clutch for my V8. I am told this "Might" (will) give a harder pedal to push, and that later ? LR Defenders had / have an "over center" clutch turret assembly ? Anyone know what year / model this over center turret box / pedal assembly was fitted to please ?
miketomcat
300tdi onwards I believe. But definitely td5. I will do this to the ibex at some point. Mike
cackshifter
Although....I have 2 300s and it is on both, yet a friend's 2002 TD5 doesn't have it. I think the over centre spring can be fitted to pedals that don't have it, so I think you need the spring, a bush for each end of the spring a plastic clip/bearing to fit to the pedal. landroversforever
I thought it was from 300tdi onwards but it would seem that they did away with it on the Td5 from other comments I've seen elsewhere. Worst case Nige, there's always the option of a clutch servo?
oneandtwo
I had an 04 td5 that didn’t have it, yet a 56 td5 and 08 Puma it had returned. But all 300tdis had it as standard.
western
the different spring came in with 300tdi, I had a new 300tdi clutch pedal assembly retro fitted back in 1994 when my first R380 gearbox was fitted.
FridgeFreezer
You can buy the extra spring + bushes for about £20 as a kit from Bearmach (DA1266), they claim it just pops into any older pedal assembly.

I’ve just done this to my 2004 TD5 and it works 👍

Technically that is wrong - it will only fit td5s and pumas that came without the spring fitted. Pre 300tdi used a different pedal box without the cutout for the springs. Ex Member
Yes, unfortunately the "will fit any year" is bad info that is attached to the spring kits. The other thing to watch with the new pedal boxes is that they do not have an adjustable "up" stop. You are supposed to adjust the master rod to set the up height, which keeps it in constant tension. IMO, it is a bad design and I add the up stop screw to my boxes. Of course, I don't really like the feel of the overcenter spring. It makes the clutch non linear and really does not decrease pedal force by much.

Agree that the ‘feel’ isn’t the most natural one but I think it is a big improvement over the original or at least the one that was on mine. Presumably the heavy weight of the original was just down to the pedal return spring that was fitted? Wondering why someone didn’t just come up with a lighter replacement for that one...🤔

Ex Member
Most definitely all pre-300TDI pedal boxes can't use the spring. The pedal arm is completely different and there would be no way to make it work.
FridgeFreezer
Well I shouldn't be surprised their info is wrong, but still it's annoying: https://www.britpart.com/all-parts/da1266/ Quote Replace the old clutch pedal spring kit to assit the pressing of the clutch pedal on Defender models. This is a factory fit on later models but can be retro fitted to all 90/110 models. Consists of spring, spring retainer & spring bushes
Ex Member
Yes, I did let them know...but apparently changing some text is hard. You would think the Mildly miffed off customers would cause a change. Maybe not. You used to be able to buy the complete genuine pedal boxes really cheap, around £50. The price doubled about a year ago.
