cackshifter
Quick question to anyone who has one on a 300tdi or any 'traditional' LR diesel for that matter I suppose; have you got the 4000rpm or 6000rpm full scale (and is it OK)?
Ex Member
I use a 4000. They run out of poop well before 4000.
western
mine is a 0 -5000rpm VDO unit as fitted to the V8 50th annivesary models, LR part number is or was AMR5724 works from a signal off the alternator 'W' terminal. updated 9 digit part number but exactly same as my unit. VDO part number in photo's in this
Ex Member
The problem with the TD5 one is that it is not adjustable. You need to have the exact correct alternator and pulley size for it to be accurate. The aftermarket ones can be precisely adjusted to match any setup. western
Well that one of mine is adjustable it has 3 dip switches & a adjuster in body side

cackshifter
Thanks for the insights folks. FYI the AMR5724 is about £450, the YAE100800 about £290, both genuine parts. The picture of the AMR5724 on lrdirect shows a 6k rpm dial - maybe not the correct picture. So I might just buy a VDO one.
TSD
I have a couple of the aftermarket VDO 6k units, works just fine on a 300tdi. I needed to do some adjustment with the TGV engine because the alternator has an unusual number of poles, but with standard tdi alternator it was nearly spot on straight out of the box. (Second unit was already fitted on the 200tdi when I got it).

ianmayco68
Croytec is showing £157 but price list is from 2017 , but might be worth a call to them

HampshireHog
How easy are they W driven ones to set up ?
western
if it's a VDO unit very easy, set the 3 dip switches on rear set the max range then at idle adjust the small screw to set the idle rpm.
HampshireHog
Many thanks Western , from reading the previous posts It seems the VDO gauges are very popular , ive seen the Merlin motorsport website and it would seem to be an average price . Thanks once again.

Ex Member
Seriously get the 4000 rpm one. Nobody would purposely run a TDI over 4000. https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/1323808637
Mo Murphy
I have the one Red90 has linked too, I've never hit 4000 rpm (nor would I want to ! ). I've found it very good, clear, easy to read and reliable. Mo

HampshireHog
Appreciate what Mo & Red are saying , im assuming the 4000 units are as easy to set up as the 6000 ones ?
western
Doubt there is any difference in setting it up, just 3 dip switches & the trimmer screw.
Mo Murphy
Hog, if I can set it up, you can ! Buy one of those infra red tachometers from ebay, cheap as chips, you can then get an accurate tick over speed to set the rev counter to. Peaklander
Just be careful if you do buy one from outside the EU. If the Post Office decide that tax is to be paid, they will hold it at the sorting office, leaving you a card directing you to a bill for the tax and that will include their own fee too. So expect to pay VAT on the whole cost (item plus P&P).
