GPS Cameras?

Does anyone have any experience, they would like to share, about GPS cameras?

The generic basic description I'm aware of is a 'standard' hand held still camera, with a built-in GPS receiver that puts the Lat and Long of the camera position into the EXIF data of each shot.

Some also have an internal Compass, so including directional information as well.

Most of them appear to have some sort of video or Burst Shot mode.

I'm not an ardent photographer, but if I'm to record features on Green Lanes then being able to go back to the same spot, or tell someone else where I was, seems like a positive benefit.

For those like me, who don't know about such things, but might like to, I've detailed my first steps.

To start somewhere for names and prices I searched on http://www.gpscameras.co.uk/

They offered links to Misco, Comet, John Lewis, Jessops, Dixons, Maplin Electronics, & Laskys Home Electronics.

I selected Jessops http://tinyurl.com/cusndly.

Shown here in price order, the Tinyurls link to the appropriate page on the manufacturers sites.

My Nokia N8 has these abilities - it is a f2.8 28mm Carl Zeiss Tessar lens with a Xenon Flash.

The sensor is 1/1.83″ and the max ISO is 1200.

It's an aluminium chassis.

It's also a phone and SatNav.

There are also Geotagging WIFI SD cards available to add to existing cameras.

Just be aware that some of these (such as the eye-fi) work only on identifying the WIFI networks around and are very unlikely to do what you want.

I don't know if some of the cameras work the same way.

Something to ask/check.

Hmmm, Thanks, It looks as though phones are another option to look at.

Although, using Expansys as an example, a Nokia N8 is £420 as an outright purchase.

Although phones can be 'free' if bought as part of a contract, I've always found that when the contract term is taken into account, the phones tend to be expensive. It's a bit like buying on Hire Purchase.

Using Phones4U as an example, charges range between 24 months at £20.50 (£492), and 18 months at £31.00 (£558).

Of course, there is some variation in Speech minutes, Texts, and Data Allowances.

Cheers.

nokia N900 smart phone, much like a very small laptop (it far far exceeds all other smart phones, its open source and runs on linux) can do GPS and also it has a 6 axis accelerometer to detect well.. 6 axis worth of information!

Most blackberrys, my old Curve 3G could gps tag pictures and my current Bold 9780 will also.

  • 2 weeks later...

I can recommend the Olympus iTough range of camera's, mine is the older model, but fell out my pocket on a mud monsters special stage, got run over by many trucks, the field was then used for grass track racing and was run over a lot more, then was found 3months later after all the snow had melted at Xmas, turned on and took a picture

new version has builtin GPS http://www.dpreview....11/3/2/olytg810

That looks pretty neat :) How good is it after dark?

The one I have is the previous model, night vision is ok with the lights on , the new one is meant to be better

I bought it to record what happens in front of me in case of an accident

Something that happened within a week of me getting it

yo don't need a GPS Camera

what you need is:

that can record track data at a per second level

One GPS unit

One Camera with EXIF info

One Laptop

One clever piece of software

basically you plug the GPS unit and the Camera into the laptop, and the laptop syncs the time of each of the three pieces of hardware to the nearest 1/10th of a second or so.

you then just start the GPS unit to create a track.

Then every time you take a photo, the camera records the exact time you took it.

When you've finised for the day you re-sync the camera, GPS and laptop. The software pulls the GPS track along with the time stamped photos and compares the time to the GPS track to work out exactly where you were- it can then write the GPS data to the EXIF info.

Its amamzingly simple in practice, and works really really well and is no more work then just normally downloading your photos from your camera. I used it with an in -car PC wihlst travelling and used the car GPS as the track recorder, but you can happily just a handheld portable GPS device in a pocket!

once i get home i will see if i can find the piece of software!
