James,

get your backside across to Frome to Peter abbot west on the Marston trading estate and get them from there-It's the only place in the local area that I can get nut's bolts washers In good quantities and with good prices too, I tried Trowbridge but failed to find anything over that way when I was doing my 90's rebuild http://www.peterabbott.co.uk/ I go and get stuff from them all of the time.

HTH

John

I (in the guise of X-Eng) use Connect2 http://www.c2fasteners.co.uk/ for all the nuts & bolts we supply with kits.

Speak to Oliver or Mike who are very helpful. If you get James - ask to speak to one of the other two unless you enjoy pedantic arguments about what the proper names for things are!

Having said that - they are exceptionally good value and have in the past, made up kits. You have to supply your own storage boxes though. I really like them as a company and they have repeatedly gone the extra mile for me!

This is a reasonable price, I spent about £120 on 2500 nuts, bolts and washers ranging from M4 to M20 from orbtial fastners + another £32 on 4 draper multi compartment boxes

With their online ordering on the web site I spent a couple of hours deciding on the quantity of each size/length combo.

I never have to worry now about finding the correct bolt for the job and never have to cut a bolt down in length to fit :i-m_so_happy:, so it's a wise move to buy a selection.

From usage on land rovers and over things, your usage will probably be a normal distribution around M8 ( i.e. mostly M8 and M10, a few M4/5 and very few of the expensive M20's)

Orbital fastners are also good for me as I can pickup from their local trade counter (but they do deliver)

Also note that it will take a while to put the nuts/bolts in to the boxes and label them (most important)

I would also recommend going for the C form washers (slight wider than normal washers) and Penny washers in your set.

Be very wary of cheap nuts and bolts. I bought some a while ago, all stamped 8.8 grade, from two different sources, if the cheap ones were 8.8 grade , then I belive in Santa. put it this way, I should not be able to shear the head off a 8.8 M10 Bolt using a 1/4 drive T-bar.... Those came in a multi-compartment plastic box (which was useful).

Not too far from you is a nut n bolt specialist (I think they were in the Bridgewater area ) whom I bought from and their prices and quality were spot on. Will have a hunt around and see if I can find the name.

Nuts and Bolts in Wetson Super Mare seem to suply decent stuff, not too far off the motorwar either.

Electro Southwest is the one you are probably thinking of in Bridgwater, on Wylds road industrial estate -very very good place to go, a wider range than Nuts and Bolts IMHO.

I think the point people are getting to here is to find a decent local stockist that you can get to quickly – a proper engineering trade counter, which is usually open Saturday morning* at least. Failing that, a good agricultural supplier will keep most sizes in stock.

G R Fasteners in Avonmouth, in case anyone's reading this is this Bristol area. Might be a bit far from Devizes though (but not as far as W-S-M…).

To answer your question, I looked at buying a set a while ago – but I came to the conclusion that between Screwfix, Toolstation, RS and the aforementioned GR fasteners I would slowly build up my stock of bolts, and take the financial hit of buying a box of 50 or 100 if it sounds like a common size (M8 and M10 on Landies!!).

And, as has been stated, whatever you buy, make sure it’s 8.8 grade.

*In other words, start a job early sat morning (nursing hangover and/or having feed+watered children and animals as appropriate), realise at about 11.30 you need some odd-size nut, jump into other-half’s car and try to beat traffic to said supplier…

A lot of "proper engineering trade counters" don't open on Saturdays and nothing beats just having the right nut/bolt for the available immediately.

Screwfix is open at better times, but seem to only have the 100 packs in stock and mostly doe the DIN931 bolts (not fully threaded)

Luckily orbital fastners is open from 7:30am so I can pick up before work

You can also get away with a much smaller set (one box) of M6 to M10 which comes to around £38 (in box), I made up one of these as a present for my brother.

Also boxes are better than bins, as they can be transported and you cannot knock them off the wall spilling the contents as you can do with bins

Fair point, but that’s the idea; I’ve found as I do my project 110 that I’ve located suppliers who are competitive on price and are at least open part of the weekend. Obviously living on the edge of a major city which still has some manufacturing base gives me somewhat more choice than, say, rural Wiltshire. Hence the suggestion of an agricultural supplier, as when I was nobbut a lad growing up in rural Oxfordshire, the local aggie place was full of bolts+nuts as well as the usual fencing supplies and tractor bits.

That said, Orbital Fasteners seems like a good supplier – assuming you spend more than £50+VAT….so good for the initial set up at least.

Yes free delivery if you spend £50+vat for those further way or spend £20+vat for me as in van area, but I find it easier to visit as you can order on the web for collection (which is very handy)

I just wished that they did imperial stuff for the odd nut/bolt that is still imperial

Looking at the mixed selection, probably quite a few in there you wouldn't get the use of if it's mainly for Land Rover tinkering - 70mm long m6 bolts, 30mm M12's for example. There was a chap at Sodbury selling tubs of fastners for an incredibly good price, but they were all funny lengths so not that much use.

local supplier is best bet, or if you're feeling lazy Namrick seem to be decent enough

I've lost count how many times i've had to do this.

wow,. loads of comments. looking at all the links and others that i searched for. Orbital fasteners seems to be the best in the aspect of easy to use and current stock which is a must for someone like me who does 99.9% of purchasing online. but i couldn't let the ebay auction go so easy, i emailed him and they are all 8.8's and a few 10.8's as well. which im glad you mentioned because i would of never of thought about that! and dont worry about the odd sizes that will never get used, between me and my neighbour they will all get used! and it also had best offer which i put in at £85 and an instant acceptance screen popped up. :D when i run out, i will be topping up with the Orbital fasteners (because of the usability of the site, which is important to me) even if i have to pay a bit more.

but i look at it this way. i just got 2240 assortment pack for £85 with 'free' delivery and containers. which to me seems good. :D but if there bad, i'll create merry hell for that eBayer. don't you worry! :)

ps: anyone does get them, see what the lowest that they will accept, for future reference of course.. ;)

thanks everyone. :i-m_so_happy:

edit: my 999 post. :hysterical:
