highlandmist
Have this a shoogle today and there's is indeed some up/down play. The lick washer is still in place but i will remove it to see if I can tighten a wee bit. I don't have anything that big in my toolbox, anyone know how big it is ? western
Steering box drop arm nut 1 5/16" or 34mm [actually 33.3375] but a 33mm socket won't fit. see 5th post in http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=5188
landroversforever
I'm sure the socket I use is a 33mm? On a related note, anyone know what the nut is thread-wise?
Mo Murphy
I just borrowed a big one from Stu's AA van Internal RH thread Ross. HTH Mo
mmgemini
Not only is the nut big. It's also FT.They guy that undid mine, had to use an inch drive windy gun on mine..
Retroanaconda
Shouldn't be too tight, 176nm (130lb-ft) according to my workshop manual, though it being too tight is unlikely to cause any issues other than getting the bugger off next time! CwazyWabbit
I found if it had come loose once it would likely come loose again ..... regardless of the level of pain used to tighten the bugger up, no doubt the splines wear when it is loose. Adam001
Getting the nut off is easy...getting the arm off is another story...
landroversforever
I just borrowed a big one from Stu's AA van Internal RH thread Ross. HTH Mo Thanks for that . Any idea on the actual thread size? I found if it had come loose once it would likely come loose again ..... regardless of the level of pain used to tighten the bugger up, no doubt the splines wear when it is loose. That's my trouble. I want to replace the nut with a large nyloc.
Retroanaconda
The washer should stop it coming undone?
landroversforever
Even with it done right up, more than the reccommended setting and the correct lock washer on there. It still comes loose over time. Nyloc is a far better solution for it then a washer if you ask me.
western
the lock washer should be keyed to the steering box shaft, if not it won't secure any nut.
need4speed
Lock washer AND nyloc. Belt n braces..
CwazyWabbit
If the splines have worn then surely a lock washer or nyloc will make little difference, the constant back and forth movement of steering (especially at slow speeds) will loosen it again won't it? landroversforever
the lock washer should be keyed to the steering box shaft, if not it won't secure any nut. The lock washer bends over the large flat of the drop arm and then over a flat of the nut. I don't think my splines are worn as its solid on there when its done up. L835
Any clues on the thread size? Mine keeps loosening despite new a new washer so want to replaced it with said nylock!
western
parts info doesn't state the thread type/size.
landroversforever
Been meaning to stick my vernier and the thread gauge on mine for a while. Will try and remember on Monday to grab them from work.
chris200100
I had this happen on mine. It turns out there's two different lock washers one is bigger than the other. I had the smaller one and it wouldn't quite stop the nut from loosening. I got the bigger one and that done the trick.
jackmac
Mine was loose, then done up to correct torque + a grunt, then came loose again, then was done up as tight as an air impact gun would go with threadlock. it's not come loose again since! L835
Tightened mine up again - hernia tight with them longest bar I could find! Waiting for a new washer, dealer says they have only ever sold 5 as they don't come loose...!
