There's some yank tuning shops on YouTube who bolt a turbo half way down the exhaust under your pickup truck (so a good 5-10ft from the engine) and duct the air back again. And they're not joking. :blink:

'quite' common to do this to make a sleeper type car, and for ease of installation, e.g. http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/techarticles/148_0502_rear_mounted_turbo/

Isn't this basically how you get a diesel engine to run completely submerged?

Saw it on TV once.

Apparently the RN looked in to CO2 breathing Diesels for autonomous under sea vehicles.

Ooops never was very good at chemistry, this is of course CO not CO2!
