stuck
Tonight I have mostly been... Fitting a new bonnet opening kit I stumbled across on www.xcess4x4.com If you have a Defender you will know how carp the standard bonnet prop is, if you need to work under the bonnet when it's windy it's bloody lethal. This kit does away with that & replaces it with two gas rams & comes with all the brackets etc to make it work I am not connected with this in any way, just thought I'd post about a superb bit of kit. I can post a couple of pictures if anyone is interested. Mick.

miketomcat
Pisssst nige gas rams should be fitted with the body up hill so the seal in the end get lubricated every time it opens. Mike

Hybrid_From_Hell
Series have hugely differing inner wings....If these prove popular ...which they seem to be doing them I might reinvest monies into a series version. ..but probably be mid 2015 Q2 at earliest. .. zim
Ive had a gas strut in my series bonnet for years now, so much easier G
Anderzander
What are they like when shutting the bonnet ? On mine the weight of the bonnet helps shut it.
Hybrid_From_Hell
Makes no difference as at the last moment the rams have less lift ...In effect last inches is still a nice crash bang closed....spent ages getting the right rams !....Some near ripped the bonnet off when opening ! ...Some trying to re lift when closing. ..Some hard to remove for bonnet off etc...These work on 300 200 td5 v8 2.5 petrol na diesel. ..not yet tested on puma. Jules Read fitted to both his 50th anniversary and fibreglass defender with big thumbs up rhd and lhd. ...
bluehaze
Presumably the bonnet opens further now?
stuck
The bonnet brackets have three positions IIRC. On my ex TD5 the middle position is the same hight as the original prop so it would go higher, not sure about TDi as I think they have a different prop? Yostumpy
factory Tdi engined have a single piece bonnet prop, same as used on vehicles with a bonnet mounted spare wheel carrier. my '98 tdi HT has the cranked one, IIRC military cranked ones had a sliding lock ring. Lewis
My mate has a 97 90 with a factory fitted scissor type prop. I converted from scissor type to a tube type one from a 2002 RoW spec 110 with bonnet mounted spare
jumping jack
Got all excited and hopeful that they would work with wheels on the bonnet, IT WILL NOT cope with wheels on bonnets ! Understandable by still :-( boo,
Team Idris
If it could lift the bonnet with the wheel on, how would you shut it without the wheel? And how fast would it open? Your phone would land somewhere in next week ! (I can see it, but I have a vivid imagination. And I've seen that Simpsons camper van episode where they launch a rabbit rather than snare it). Team Idris
Makes sense when you've seen a scissor used with a spare wheel on a series. It does look a tad strained.
