  1. Easiest answer is to go and ask your MOT inspector, Most will be only too happy to help you. Lara.
  2. Ced had a D44 Winch bumper fitted to his "old" truck, just as Jake is showing in his pic I must say that it is along with the D44 steering guard, the best engineered winch bumper system that I have ever seen that is readily available off of the shelf! Would 1000% recommend one! As far as we were concerned it had NO disadvantages anywhere! Lara.
  3. Just a little lightening scheme Lara
  4. The point is Tim, that without Written regulations and "quoted sections and paragraphs" what you were saying was totally meaningless and just "another" hear say interpretation. Not Fact! and Not supported by any rules or documents. Just you quoting a supposed (not me doubting you, I believe you, just that it is also unsubstantiated) phone call, apparently with someone at DfT, (big title maybe but then he should be able to qoute "section and paragraph?) he obviously didn't? Bull5hit may be a too harsh word and it was not meant to offend you, just to get the message across that any info is worthless if not substantiated. And no one has done so, so far. That is why the whole SVA thing is blown out of all proportion, it is not hard as you know, All this misinformation though makes it hard for people who do not feel able to find out and interpret the rule book for themselves, and often get scared off before they start. Many people get scared of doing conversions just like HfH intends to do, just because some miss-informed forum member says "you can't do that" and mentions SVA This needs to stop. I am not saying that you are miss-informed or not trying to help, just that these subjects need hard FACTS and questions need answering with Proof. You can not just say "I was told by an man who knows" if we all believed every time we heard this then we would all be walking by now! And your car wouldn't exist either Lara.
  5. Nige, There used to be a guy who sold complete bolt on conversions for series vehicles, not sure of the company name but will try to find it for you. Used to advertise in LRE etc. http://www.allabout4x4.com/landroverseriespowersteering.html Found it, Should work well as an aid! Lara
  6. Tim, Read what I said, SHOW US THE PRINTED WORDS The C&U nor the SVA paperwork has a caption that reads "ask Tim's mate" Whoever he may be, You can only apply rules that are WRITTEN! Solid! As I said, We have a solid link of rubber, We could change that to SOLID link of Inconel, but YOU sprouted "METAL OR SIMILAR PROPERTIES" I answered "similar to Mercury?" Similar to what metal would you like this link to be? Or more accurately What does your mate have ideas about in his head? WE NEED FACTS and ONLY FACTS! WITH PROOF! or it's still only "HEAR SAY" from whatever source! In my opinion and after reading SVA and C&U paperwork several times, Full Hydraulic or anything else that is correctly designed and "WELL ENGINEERED" will be fine, As long as it 1. Self centres, 2. Collapses in case of an accident, in an acceptable way, 3. Is well engineered and executed. 4. Works as well as the standard for this type vehicle. Unless someone shows me the "actual section" in the rule book that states otherwise! Lara.
  7. Tim, With all due respect, This is just the total bo11ocks that I have been mentioning!!! "I spoke with the man who knows" This is utter Bul5hit! Either it is written or it is not!!! Metal or similar properties! Mercury is a metal No? It's got similar properties to hydraulic oil No? So it's OK No? Solid link of "material" Define "material" cardboard? rubber" sticky-backed plastic? The rubber of the pipework is solid! I can't see any hydraulic oil swilling around the steering so it seems that we have a solid rubber link, so if I change the pipes to inconel convoluted pipework, is that ok? Exactly, It isn't written because "it could not possibly be written" Think about what you are saying! you are certainly bright enough, Please NO BUL5HIT ........... just "written regulations" Conditions and Use! explain the infringement of hydraulic steering then, made for this condition and being used as such, LEGAL!!! I have read that also and no mention of hydraulic or / and a metal bloody link either! Thank you. Lara It's late and I am still office working so need to vent
  8. Mmmmmm, Need to chat you up about self centre then matey!!! You in on Sunday? Might be over your way ) If people are simply after easier steering then either simply fit a higher pressure pump (not flow) Or one of these http://www.howeperformance.com/accessories-new.htm Steering Speeder/Reducer 1.5:1 Ratio Lara
  9. A very good answer Simon, Exactly as I have found from various SVA people, Glad someone also agrees that they can not find any specifics in the rule book, was beginning to think it was my eyes With regards to a backup though, I don't see why it is any different than a ball joint failing? no backup there either! As you say though, the return always being different and the lack of self centre may be issues. Think Tim's answer is the easiest though if people "must" have a steering box! Lara
  10. I like this idea! We could also have portal type hubs, And just use a 5th hub motor coupled to a winch, my that would pull Lara
  11. Will, I have read and read and read the TUV paperwork and have asked the question so many times it hurts, but no one has ever shown me the section where the TUV requests you to have this "mechanical linkage" "metal linkage" or any other specific link! Hydraulic "IS" mechanical, Hydraulic (if filled with Mercury) "IS" a metal link, a "metal link" it couldn't be written or described, even if it was! Unless anyone can show me the relevant section as I may possibly have missed it (although I think not) I have asked so many "experts" and even the SVA themselves, they also said that they had no problem if it conformed to "their regs" but could or would not tell me what did or didn't Anyone show me the section and wording? other than "a man who knows told me" Only problem for a full hydraulic as far as I can read and foresee is self centering. and I reckon I could sort that if I put my head to it. Lara
  12. BogMonster, sorry if the answer sounded a bit offish but was just trying to explain why I thought the question was unanswerable accurately. Jim, Wonderful engine that Hercules, you are lucky to have worked on such a masterpiece! I love plane engines, have a mate with a collection of old war planes, and regularly drool over them, and especially the engines! Love the power additives they were playing with in the war years! 66-68 Must have been a good time for you. Lara
  13. Of course Jim, We Only want 25% you think? Lara
  14. With great pleasure. And remember that once you have set the spring rate etc, you can cut all the mounting screws etc to length and tidy things up. you will see why I left them all long for you when or if you need to dis-assemble / assemble it to change the spring. Lara
  15. Have to say that there are far too many, assumptions and guesses mixed in with hear say and miss-information here for anyone to get any reliable information from, The EGT of any engine be it SI or CI is related directly to the inlet air temperature and fuel / air ratio and the ignition timing, so supposing that just because one observed engine's EGT goes up or down when boost or fuel was added or an exhaust was blocked etc then all engines will respond the same way is just plan ignorance. And I am not blaming anyone for this as observation of testing is very good practice, but limited experience given out on forums by people with limited experience is the way to disaster. Real research and then years and years of testing is the "only answer" and even then generalisations must be very very carefully made! It is possible for a Diesel turbo engine, if engineered well, to keep on giving more power all the way to 15+Bar without exceeding 750 degrees C, EGT as long as the injection timing (and therefore the Ignition timing) is altered in connection with the fuel quantities injected and the inlet air is cooled correctly. The bottom will probably blow out first rather than the EGT's being too high. Look at tractor pulling for an example. Problems usually occur for the following most common reasons. 1. Fuel added to an otherwise lean running engine, Extended full throttle use. Obviously will increase EGTs as you will be making more power from the same air and the excess air that would have helped reduce EGTs will now be producing more power and therefore more heat. 2. Running on the "rich limit" Potentially the most power produced from a given air quantity, but no excess air for piston / cylinder cooling / stabilizing, (most potential for problems) 3. Increasing fuel without thought for injection timing. (the combustion flame travels at very differing speeds dependant on many criteria, eg lean, rich, hot inlet air, cold inlet air, etc etc) Maximum cylinder combustion pressure should be reached a few degrees (depending on different engines) before TDC, too late and EGTs go up dramatically without increasing power, too soon and power drops dramatically allong with raising EGTs and in bad cases, bearing / piston destruction. 4. Boost increased beyond 1.4/5 bar, fuel increased, inlet air cooling not increased. Not only does this not actually increase the potential oxygen inside your combustion chamber because the air is actually so much less dense than previously (diminishing returns etc) but the hot air causes ignition problems and needs the fuel to be injected at an abnormal time to combat pre-ignition (yes, see 3 above) Power does not increase, smoke usually increases, / EGTs increase people get confused by results. These are just a very few of hundreds of reasons not to go on with this thread, Without being rude and not meaning to upset anyone, but If you have to ask on a forum you need to do your own research, read more books and gain a lot more experience on this subject before you can figure out the carp from the genuine info, and all being given as "informed" answers, so little point asking There are no "rules" bar one, Do your own thing on your own engine, Do not listen to others unless they back up their theory with a VERY good argument. (and even then don't completely trust them) Be prepared for many destroyed engine parts and a lot of expenditure. Don't be put off by someone saying "you can't" and 'impossible" if you think you can and the theory stacks up then "you can" until you find out why you can't ;o) probably too late anyway Good luck, Lara.

Very interesting and funny thread this one and I would like to comment on a few things. 1. Les's tech posts are great! some are VERY basic, just like the one in question and others are a lot more techy, all are appreciated by me as what they are, Information for whoever needs it! 2. I also like to take the P, almost all of the time actually, life is too short not to and am fairly sure (but not 100% without checking and can't be bothered) that I also took the P out of this thread on D44 forum, So what! what happens on D44 should stay on D44, A personal attak is just that, one directed at one person dirrectly. Wolfy's or anyone elses were not personal, it was just a tiddle take out of what they thought was humerous! people take the P out of me regularly, great! keeps your feet on the ground! And nothing written on D44 stopped that thread from being just as interesting to those that needed it, (probably doubled it's hits actually ) 3. I took the P out of a certain other thread on here regarding fuel savings, Luckily the person who wrote that thread has a good understanding of humor, I was not saying that his or any other thread has no right on here, Who am I to decide? as Les says, views are a better indication, for whatever reason the view is for. It was just my personal opinion that it was a waste of time, I would not dare say that to the writer as it would be an insult. If he considers "his" use of "his" time appropriate then fine with me, and he may know better than me anyway! but I will still have a joke with the subject! Life must be fun! The main reason people are taking the P on D44 is because this forum seems to be getting rather to serious and maybe "up it's own arse' for it's own good! Pipe down, stop over sensitive moderating and to a large extent it will moderate it's self!!! Do not think for one minute that anyone on this forum or any other has the right to tell people what they may or may not do on any other forum in this universe! Total lr4x4 forum suicide would prevail if they did. Lara Please keep this forum a good one!
  17. you are right, but we ain't got many hills here in this part of Belgium It would be good for the shops but it is kept locked in my workshop behind two sets of gates, so can't be bothered Lara
  18. My ideal Landy Light 2.8 litre Diesel engine Variable Vane Turbo, Loads of torque, Auto box, Torque biasing diffs and Traction Control, Centre diff lock and stronger, lower Low range gears, Mega strong drive shafts and Ashcroft CV,s 100+ litre fuel capacity, Rust free chassis coating, 35 inch tyres, Full length skid plate, HID Head lights, LED other Lights all round, 30+ miles to the gallon Only got one of those missing! Guess which
  19. Audi Q7 V12 6 Litre 500 bhp and 1000nm@1750 to 3000 and only 687mm long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nuf said! Lara Cost? Ah! small snag
  20. I reckon that with a bit of fun you could have a 4 - 5 or 6 pot Diesel with more power than you would fever need, and be able to package it better! May not be as cheap for the initial motor but would have **** loads of power and the torque to pull the arms off of King Kong, Remember that US crate motor hp usually ain't the same as "real" hp Although it would never sound the same as a good old V8! Lara
  21. Great video and one of the best made I have seen! BUT Those who advise to do Strata Florida on their own regardless of weather should seriously think again! although it may be easy most of the time, all you need is a momentary lapse of concentration (easy to do when all feels easy) and you have a problem! on your own, that could be a Big problem, Safety first, we don't want any more injuries OR bad publicity. Lara.
  22. Do it by ear is easiest but certainly not scientific Wheel assist will give you a low line speed unless wheels are spinning quite fast, No wheel assist will give you a very good line speed with a 33cc pump at sensible engine revs, TCs all "lock" at differing speeds dependant on power input, but with little power input it should give very little slip as the stall will be very low, great for winching! Suck it and see would be my advice on this unless you love very involved and never ending Maths Lara
