  1. Hi Guys, You will find that any engineer worth his salt can change the positioning of the compressor and turbine housings quite easily, not rocket science All VVT's are mechanically operated but some (such as the Mercedes Sprinter) have an electronic control in the line to the control capsule, the Merc uses engine Vacuum to operate it and there is an electronic valve controlling this. Again, don't be scared, it is not rocket science! And I know that most of you can play rockets as well as the rest of us Lara.
  2. Just use a little oil and the correct torque. Nothing else needed or recommended. Lara.
  3. Sorry to contradict a little but important with brakes. The word you are looking for Pug is "Hygroscopic" Silicone fluid is now banned in international events due to the following reasons. 1. Normal brake fluid is hygroscopic and as such as Pug correctly says, attracts and absorbs water, it does however also mean that the water absorbed is evenly distributed throughout the entirety of the fluid rendering small amounts harmless. Silicone fluid does not absorb water and any water / moisture in the system (and there is plenty in any system not constructed in a vacuum) then congregates together and forms water pockets, now this is fine as long as it stays cold. I.e. you don't use your brakes, but as soon as you start using them and adding heat to the equasion the water pocket can turn to steam at some stage and you then instantly get air in the system and an instantly soggy or non existent pedal. Not good This also happens with normal fluid but at a much slower rate as the water is evenly distributed in the fluid and turns to steam at a much slower rate so your brakes fade slowly and warn you as you loose feeling. 2. Dot 3 - 4 - 5 etc are different specs and sometimes a DOT 5 will kill seals in a system designed for DOT 3 etc, so not always good to "upgrade". The best way I have found to drain / change fluid is to open all bleed nipples, fit a length of pipe to the ends with the other end in a jam jar etc and lightly pressurise the fluid reservoir with a couple of psi, do this until the system is empty and then purge it with new fluid in the same way. You may have to lock off individual nipples as you go to make sure all fluid gets out. Good luck, Lara.
  4. What you need is a woman like mine, she does more off roading than me Perfect she is! Lara.
  5. A modern Turbo spins at up to 200,000 rpm As you can imagine ballance is critical at this speed. although you can rebuild your own unit, it is not worth the hassle as you will not do it propperly without a sophisticated ballancing machine. So many companies can do it properly nowadays for under 200 quid. Do the job properly ONCE! Lara.
  6. Hi Jim, Not standard but mainly a precaution for heavy off roading, if you kill your engine your batteries will be dead very quickly in a very heavy pull! On the TDI type tank it is long and thin front to back which is not good for pickup on heavy angles. Ced's car runs one HP pump by the swirl pot and two lifters low down near the tanks. Lara.
  7. This is my version, (bits removed for easy viewing) I run 1.8 Bar boost peak, 1.7 settled. Full rich set at 1.6 Bar and 0.2 extra to clean things up and cool things down, Engine not quite standard though Not had time for the rolling road with the new turbo etc yet as had turbo problems. Bearing failure! Initial torque is mega massive! from 1100 rpm onwards with no boost lag what so ever! Lifted auto box stall speed from 2000 to almost 2500rpm and that means big numbers! Running with my old hybrid unit installed now and it feels terible in comparison Got special hybrid VVT on order, should rip my wheels of (hope not) Lara.
  8. Anglo American Oil Company Ltd 3 Holly Close Sandford, Wareham, Dorset BH20 7QE United Kingdom Tel 01929 551557 Very good guys for all sorts of special race fuel. I buy my methanol from them when racing in the UK. Lara.
  9. Hi Jim, Strictly speaking there is no need for a swirl pot. BUT. In a competition vehicle that is often at strange angles for extended periods it is desirable to have a sensible size swirl pot (otr just a resevoir) of say 2 litres, as it is designed to be kept full at all times and therefore, even if the lifter pumps run dry due to the angle of the vehicle, the swirl pot could still feed the engine for at least 30 minutes. Most well designed swirl pots are long and tall for this very reason, (harder to uncover the fuel pickup) Lara.
  10. Hi Guys, Ced's truck has now done away with the high up filler and has one filler in the usual TD5 place, 1 x 45L tank pasenger side in std 300tdi place and one x mirror 50L tank on drivers side (continental) and a Y piece inside the fillen neck with stainless tube joining them both. Twin lifter pumps into the swirl pot you see with one high pressure pump drawing from that, the engine return goes into the swirl pot and the overflow into the drivers side tank which is used as the primary. Twin gauges on dash. 95 Litres in total. Hope it helps. Lara.
  11. Class 1, No Winch Class 2, 1 Winch Class 3, 2 Winch Easy to police, Very few rules makes everything clear! No one is going to fit No Winch but 40 inch tyres and lockers with megga suspension etc just to compete in only one series ???? are they? Lara.
  12. This is mine, 8mm Dural, bolted directly to the chassis with a 6inch 60-degree kickup at the front to stop crud buildup. Gearbox crossmember has been raised to chassis level. Fuel tank guard on right and now a guard on the left for the hydraulic valve block that sits in front of the battery box. Lara.
  13. Fridge, That is the best suggestion I have heard for a long time, The LRW girls could get their kit off too, ;o) (Sorry Kev, not saying you're ugly, just not my type ) Lara.
  14. Yes Hendrik, That's what I use, After snapping about a dozzen of other synthetic ropes from different suppliers, all after a couple of events and when looking tatty (which happens very quickly with all normal type ropes) Said that I would try this one and if that snapped then go back to steel! Been on there for 1 year now and only snapped recently when it got pulled against a sharp metal edge (no suprise there) Still not frayed, never needed to clean it and will still take a full 6 ton pull from my Hydraulic winch! Am Keeping this!!!! Cost? Twice as much as normal plasma types etc but has lasted me 4 times as long!!! Lara.
  15. We always used to say "if it looks like 300 bhp it has to have 500........If it looks like 500 it has to have 800! " That way you don't get blown off buy the guy who looks like 200 and has 400 ! Make it all look under statement, including your mouth! then you don't get made to look a prick........................................................................ Quite so often Lara.
  16. Hi Pete, No got the names mixed up, Read the thread from Peter and missed the GG on the end! Silly me, Going to nick yours now to make the the thread correct Lara. Spoken to Fi yet?
  17. Hi Pete. Ask Fi, She knows loads of people in the 4x4 world in Portugal to give you the full rundown ! Sorry to hear about your bumper etc. Lara.
  18. Hi Andy, Just gone through your build up pics and looked at your cooling system, The rad does seem to be large enough so I take back my last answer. Some relevant and quite important questions that I would ask are as follows though. Where is the air to cool the rad comming from? Is the air flow masked by any large objects? Where does the hot air go after it goes through the rad? Is there anything in the way of the exit flow? Do I have an absolutely enormous cooling fan to counter these arguments? Is said fan ducted to give maximum efficiency? Lara. Lovely looking truck by the way!
  19. Andy, By the time you have read all these answers you could have gone and done two days work to pay for the new bigger rad that you realy need, Bills idea of making a shroud is a good one and yes it realy does work as he says, but saying that, you are banging your head against a wall with the rad in an off road vehicle if you are marginal on cooling efficiency, as you obviously are. Just bite the bullet and get a nice thick ally cored unit as big as you can sensibly fit, make a shroud and be happy in the knowledge that even when half of it is covered with mud you are still going to be able to cool the engine. Job done Once! Lara.
  20. Well if you ask me, the front / rear and side to side weights are better than most race cars as a percentage of total And certainly nothing that you will feel in this trucks usage Well done Andy, a lovely looking machine and the weight is very good for such a vehicle. Look forwards to seeing it in the flesh. Lara.
  21. Yes Tonk, TBR have been about for quite some years. Lara.
  22. I use an auto and would NEVER go back to manual!!!!!!!!!! EVER Use an eleccy one and you have an auto manual as well, so could not be better. Lara.
  23. Hot air power Al that's what they mean Lara
  24. Actually I want to take that all back Fair play to you mate! do what you want and welcome to the Green Oval Mandy is dead right, For once a woman I agree with Lara.
