  1. private legal action would be possible, (expensive) and you would need to show that there was more than probable belief that they knowingly sold in a "unroadworthy" condition , if it was sold as roadworthy ?
  2. Heater plugs if cold start poor , and hot start good . Dont worry about a bit of rust on outside of injector body , wont affect anything , just going down side between head and injector you are unlikely to have porous head unless loosing water from cooling system . Re breathing , they all get a bit of oil in intake , was the turbo overhauled when you did rebuild ?
  3. I think they have more problems than just Evans ! TG had about run its course anyway , It makes you wonder if subconsciously JC realised it , and was just helping it to terminate ?
  4. How old is the Discovery ? How often do you give it a proper ie manufacturer type servive and check ? do you think any vehicle of similar age etc would be any better ? JMHO but probably not
  5. iirc there was one for sale on HMVF forum around september time was a stage 1 V8 base dont know what the outcome was HTSH
  6. IIRC the rapier chassis was made from stretched 110 chassis rather than as later as a 130 chassis from start
  7. I always found it ridiculous that aircon condensers on 4x4 specced for Australia were fitted in front of the rad , whenever working hard climbing sand dunes etc all the 4x4 makes had to turn of the aircon as the vehicles would start to overheat , that was why I fitted a roof top unit on my 110 copying the practice of mining equipment and was able to enjoy the benefits of cool air when you most need it even with the V8 engine
  8. If you are not upto speed on wiring diagrams and theory there are no real tips to diagnose the problem below the level at which i have advised . One piece of advice Dont take to main dealer try and find auto lecky or better stil a local independent landy workshop.
  9. Viscous fan usually shouldnt be locking at highway cruising speeds , I ran 300tdi 130 DCHCPU in OZ and with aircon on and climbing over the escarpment towing close to 4 ton you could hear the viscous engage and then about 2 mins later release. The temp guage would hardly move noticeably . If the temp guage is staying in normal, and you have checked condenser fan in not rotating wrong way ( not unheard of with sucker fan fitted in blower fan position) then it may be worth trying a different viscous unit , as it may be locking at too low a temp . Should mention this was in summer in WA type ambient temps
  10. As previous posts sidewall repairs are a no no , unless proper vulcanised repair which unless you know a friendly ag tyre guy with the right equipment is BER . The simplest answer is just stick a tube in it , it will have fabric sidewall plies so no need to use a gaiter on tube , just make sure you buff out any QC labels on inside of casing , just pulling stickers off will be no good as the glue causes the tube to perish and will cause a hole with resulting slow leaks.
  11. There may be a problem with the CCU or wiring between it and the rear door or a problem with the motor in the rear door
  12. unless you have a good seal on the bellhousing you are better off leaving the drain plug out , just make sure you have the right gear selected before entering the water and don't try and change gear , until you are out of the water, that way it wont slip
  13. It was the later 4 -98 leyland , had the 2a box behind it for years , and overdrive and 4.1 diffs . As previous posts its how you use the power:)
  14. the V8 box will be set up different to the tdi as power and torque characteristics will be very different bell-housings should be interchangeable, likewise torque converters speaking to Ashcroft will give you the definates
  15. I had a series 3 with a 3.8 diesel engine with a 2a box behind it and that handled train weights of 6 ton , smooth changes need to be the rule tho as the half shafts are the fuseable link
  16. the lt 85 is a bit like the old series box , it will make a lot of noise for a long time and get really bad before it gives up FME
  17. filtration intake restriction using the tdi unit might not be a good idea anyway
  18. Two options . I just filed down the transducer spigot evenly on each face to keep centralised , its working fine for several years. The other option would be get the td5 version of the drive gear , they just slide fit , there is an O ring on the sleeve . ps the drive ratio might need changing depending on the tyre size any way
  19. It was about 2 year to 18 months back , they had a few series and defender, and the prices were quite reasonable , but they tended to be at the more scrappy end of quality , but ok for the price , but believe the business has new operators , its in a shed on a farm , might be worth a trip its not far . about 4 miles keep your eyes open
  20. I dont think we realise how arduous it was for the early explorers even as late a Len Beadell , when we travel in our powerful airconditioned 4x4s , the mossies and heat when you get out maybe gives a little taster, the fact that scenerey is so similar even at our modern speed , must have been even more mind numbing when you were doing in day what we do in an hour . The thing that struck me most was the emptiness , and how small we are .
  21. I can tell you about a barbecue grill on the back of a Hilux in Australia , it was boxing day afternoon and one of the sons of the particular family thought that rather than emptying and cleaning the barbecue at home he would drive out about 1.5 miles to the town tip and dump it there. The speed increased as he left town and as a result it fanned the barbecue resulting in it distributing hot embers along the road side , which set fires , on about 1 mile front , fields caught light , and resulted in Bush fire brigade having to be called out , and our call out as Fire and Rescue to protect local industrial area
  22. There is another side to this , its not cheap owning and preparing a vehicle to deal with adverse conditions , and as a a previous poster mentions its no longer good enough that you are happy to help out in emergencies, they want their cake and eat it as well now. I have personal experience of similar "demands" where its all by their rules , as if it is them doing you a favour by making use of your assistance , this was particularly noticeable after having lived in Australia for a number of years , a whole different approach . Kankuu were a bit over the top , but I am sure there are many who have suddenly had neighbours become good mates when they need their vehicle towing out of snow etc , or ramblers who don't mind traveling in a landrover when they sprain an ankle whilst fell walking .
  23. that business has been there for several years , used to be very reasonable prices , think it must be new owners
  24. Is this what you mean ? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-16776801
  25. I cant help but agree with CD i had a new stage 1 V8 SW , and then I had a year old 110 V8 CSW both pulled like a train and went far better than any 300tdi , albeit at the expense of a voracious thirst . They were both used for towing as well far into europe eg Naples , Stuttgart etc , and then overland and in Australia including pulling a 35ft 2 axle caravan . I had a 300tdi HCPU 130 in OZ as well and it did its share but the V8 did it so much easier , especially uphill from a standing start . Ive retrofitted a diesel in the 110 as I still have it , but had to go to BMW 3 ltr TDI to get similar performance .
