  1. If you want overdrive then you will need a bottom pto casing , getting the two on together is a right PITA job , landrover always said it was not possible ! I managed it , just , bottom pto cases are very very rare , even back in the 70s i had to buy a new one from landrover. The top pump pto mounting just bolts in . You will also need to make a linkage . Fitting a front hydraulic winch or the equiv mech drum, will require fitting H/D front springs . The hyd tank goes behind n/s rear wheel from memory , holds 5 gallon IIRC . There is a smaller mech drum winch by Turner that fitted on front and was driven by end of crank , same as a capstan . Dont make mistake of using a synthetic rope if you end up with a capstan . With winching the bigger they get the more dangerous , and also drive assisting multiplies that as well !
  2. How do they route them without a rear pto hole in the rear X member , unless its a hydraulic drive item ?
  3. Its part of the spirit , like the wave thing , but there are a lot fewer now that stop , so nice to hear when it happens Its also something that the owner of a older landrover is likely to do I think
  4. Lot of discussion about what is considered radically altered etc , and complaints about not clear enough , so arguable. Bottom line is what the DVSA inspector decides ,and from experience you are very unlikely to get them to change it , and unless you have very deep pockets to mount a legal challenge , which due to the vagueness you will most likely lose, how lucky do you feel when doing the build with all the effort and expense as well that you are going to end up not getting a decision you like ? PS they have got some inspectors that are landrover savvy even own one !
  5. I think the point that is being missed is its not exact componentry its design , eg a discovery axle on a 90 is still the same type , it will bolt straight in . A discovery axle on a series 3 is not , it requires extensive modification . Likewise suspension going from leaf to coil , is not a straight bolt in . same as fitting a l/crusr axle . gearbox eg in a V8 110 changing from 5 speed r380 from lt85 , still a manual gearbox and a bolt in job ,and both were fitted. I would consider my 90 with a 300tdi in place of its 2.5turbo points neutral but the auto gearbox would be points negative. When dvla were informed of the change of engine and gearbox , no query was mentioned. When i fitted a six cylinder turbo diesel BMW into my V8 110 it had to have inspection by mot garage. It would appear that there is no exact standard , which I am not surprised by particularly with my insight into the system .
  6. now its historic vehicle class as trigger for use of black and white plates , but if you were using a vehicle that would originally have been required to have reflective , you are hardly going to spoil its concours condition with a "fake" plate . It may be that this has been brought in to go towards an EU compliance , as european historic class vehicles usually have a special "historic" designated plate although the number would have quite [possibly have changed several times thru its life , as UK is only one that has a plate tied to vehicle for life (with cherished exceptions)

Its not the originality of the item that loses the point its type , eg if you have a 4 cylinder diesel and you fit a v8 petrol then thats gone then if you fit coil springs , from leafs thats gone , if you just change the coils that is like for like so no loss. Likewise going from steering box to rack and pinion is a loss. so if you start with a series 3 2.286 diesel and fit a V8 , auto with coils and rack and pinion , and independent front end who could argue that its still a series 3 , so perfectly logical system .
  8. Dont think that NFU lobbying was the real reason , its down to the DFT selling off all the HGV test stations , and not being able to get any suitable facilities with the private ATF owners
  9. 1. You will need to get it thru SVA as you will be modifying the chassis . 2. Tyre wear on axle three is horrendous 3. Fuel consumption increases quite a bit as well 4. Finding the correct brake master cylinder will be difficult . 5. They are worse off road than a 4x4 if only 6x4 6. The cheapest way to get a 6x4 is buy a tacr2a
  10. If you put a V8 in it, ala stage 1 V8 , changed the diffs , parabolics on the front , with a front disc brake conversion , wouldnt be all that far of 110 performance , with about the same fuel consumption as the hard working 2.5 petrol, and with a n/a diesel slow aint the word !

A RR will be pushed around by a solid connection , I have used a 110 connected to a 90 by a solid bar in deep snow off road, for traction reasons and it requires very careful driving by the second driver , i have also experienced a RR being pushed by a heavy trailer at quite a low speed on a wet downhill bitumen road due to the push lifting the rear end . Its also surprising the amount of traction needed to tow a disabled 110 uphill by a another 4wd with double diff locks , the solution required the other 4wd having to climb solo and then the 110 winching itself upto it and repeat.
  12. you wont do any damage to the auto box pushing it around with the oil dropped, but if its easier to push with transfer neutral then do that. TCL can be at what speed is required down to engine power, torque rise etc , in the jatco box on the freelander TCL is prevented when cold to allow faster warm up down to slippage , and relies on a temp sensor in the box. Using the engine resistance when going down hill is limited compared with a manual gearbox.
  13. the vast majority of modern "foglights" fitted to cars are a fashion item rather than an actual useful item . The modern headlamp with its very well controlled beam pattern has pretty much made foglamps obsolete. The only real answer to fog is radar or certain infra red sighting systems, not really suitable for use on a road going vehicle. DRLs are almost the exact opposite of what is required on a fog light .
  14. with the set up you have if 3.54 diffs the revs should be 2500rpm , maybe your ear needs recalibrating so 3500 sounds like 3500 which is quite busy in a 300tdi !

  16. How did you contact NFU as I have a landrover with a winch and a hell of a lot more , and no trouble at all with NFU

The towing vehicle needs to be well ballasted as either single pole or A frame runs the risk of pushing the back of the RR sideways Ideal would be A frame on front and solid bar linking recovered vehicle to third vehicle. To be honest tho such a set up for recovering a 110 is a bit over the top , your biggest requirement is people who know what they are doing rather than what you are using, also speed is a big factor.

  20. Even with a prohibition notice it can be allowed that a vehicle be driven to home or a place of repair ,subject to what type of fault is present , and may specify conditions eg time of day , speed , laden etc . Some may require tow or transporting .

I don't denigrate anyone for modifying a vehicle , would be a total hypocrite after doing what i have to my 110 , but its the totally inappropriate changes and usage idea that's impossible to understand, eg trying to make it compete with subaru impezza wrx Its become for some the latest "handbag" they just dont realise that they can be spotted as total posers

For headlights relay the lights as close to lamps as possible and use a supply wire that is at least twice the minimum required will ensure very little voltage drop which is the major with regard to light performance. Similar advice re any other high current lighting. Less critical on things like side lights etc. HTSH

Its symptomatic of the Spin and bling culture where any sense of function over form has been lost , I was looking at a tipper truck earlier today , the guy with it was saying how the designers haven't got a clue what they are at , its for use in quarries, and building sites, down on the front corner of the cab is a sculpted and styled headlight assy with built in led running lights and flasher lamp , covered by a moulded plastic guard that's about as effective as a chocolate teapot , they had a led drl fail its sold as a unit just over £300 At least owners havent quite got to the stage of the morons who stretch tyres to fit on rims that are overwidth
