  1. I was thinking exactly the same just swap casings front to rear plus a possible dable with welder and saw.
  2. Anybody read Total off road this month? There is a vehicle on pages 68-73 running a Mormon chassis and portal axles. I gather the article is about a vehicle in France but what is a Mormon? I am interested to find out morebout these axles. anybody got any clues?
  3. That "one clause" has been taken by some to be the major difference between calss 2/3 and class 1 I guess that I am not alone in posibly falsely assuming that using the fact that the vehicle had to be road legal was a guide as to the limit of modifications to classes 2 and 3 maybe it has a false connection with other peoples rules of rtv+1 rtv+<1 or non rtv+unlimited. Some times the winner is the one who makes the best interpretation of the rules looks like I need to dig out the rule book that was issued to me and spend some more time reading, Could I have a rule book in large font with more pretty pictures and less print
  4. I think I heard a rumor that an alternative site is being looked into
  5. give Gwyn Lewis a ring "during work hours" I would be supprised if he couldn't sort you out with pipe, elbows, expanded pipe flanges, clamps, hangers, and silencers, to suit your requirements if you asked him nicely. of course he could sell you a complete side exit kit www.gwynlewis4x4.co.uk
  6. spoil sport I have recently found a scrap Belarus tractor front axle and liked the idea of running it with 48" high tractor tyres
  7. I am not entirely sure it is a good idea to run a arb compressor with an auxilary tank Your pump will have to work at a higher pressure for longer as it fills up your tank, not good I believe there is a good reason why the newer ARB compressors have a smaller tank. I think it is a good thing to reduce pump running time not increase it. Think long and hard about why you need that air reservouir. For back up air to power your lockers in event of compressor failure has anybody tried plugging their air pump up kit onto the spare tyre? although the pressure switch setting is much higher how much pressure is needed to activate a locker?
  8. devils advocate hypothetically could I build a severely modified buggy loosley based on a toyota landcruiser and fit one winch run huge tractor tyres and still enter in class 3? will scruitineering be more strict next year to make sure the veicle is in a safe compatition/road worthy condition? I havent the time or money to build a monster and intend on co-driving nex year but would like to see a level playing field especialy in a class where there is a higher probability of newcomers entering. I wouldnt like to see awdc being a big boys all toys only club that says if you cant take the heat stay out of the kitchen. Othe other hand I would like to think that people aspire to be a champion of a awdc series and consider it to be a worthwhile title.
  9. I have allso attatched a flange to a tractor with a chain on an old series years ago pulling slowly just slid the land rover accross so a sharp tug and the shaft flew out underneath the tractor.
  10. Best place to cut is on the flat after the gearbox fixing point. I have shortened a rr to 88" and lengthened a rr to 109" but not done anything with a 110 although I cant see why the thery is any different, obviously 110 chasis is deeper than rr but that should make it stronger. Gigglepin arms keep the wheelbase the same but remove the standard drop down"ears" that the old trailing arms mount to, the arms come with new flush fitting mountings 300mm further forward.
  11. Whilst playing with warn type solenoids I have found. The solenoid is intended for intermitent duty. The solenoid coil burns it's self out if left switched on for long periods of time, the longest I managed was 25min and the solenoid casing was very hot.
  12. stick 40 psi in the front tyres. use small skinny tyres. buy a larger steering wheel. why do you want to make the steering lighter?
  13. You mean this bloke He had the missfortune of a stick coming up underneath his truck and damaging his gearbox. Me thinks he needs to fitt a belly plate.
  14. When your co driver has the grit and determination to do things like this to help get you through a section you can seeone of the factors on how the team did well. The event was as tough as we expect from AFC/TFC winning team achived 11 sections through 2 days. This wasn't without some problems. Alan was smiling on Sunday evening though.
  15. Before ordering a Ivor trailer give J C Grifiths of Talgarth mid/south ish Wales a ring I honestly belive their price will be sufficiently cheaper for you to justify the traveling. their no.01874 71137 My trailer came from them and two of my frinds have since bought 4 trailers from them.
  16. Hands up Just in case Alan hasnt made it clear enough he is refering to me !!!!! 2 months ago I did get one cyber point by parking along side the rope the key rope was then long enough to reach without being pulled in any way from its steel peg. I did not drive over the rope in any way I had the points deducted and a month later on enquiring why was duly informed of the reasons, my vehicle didnt cross the blue rope barrier. The rules regarding rope have certanly been made crystal clear now ! Was this called for? My usuall punch count was not in real terms well down. I had 4 less than you whilst breaking my rear winch rope and running from 12:00 with no lockers (killed my arb compressor deep water) I did not run arround teamed up with a red 90 like your self, nor did I brag "you wont get that one on your own mate." It looks to me as if I should ask you in the future as to any reasons to penalties as you appear to know more than me or the event organisers! I knew I had driven over the blue rope whilst reversing out after achiving the cyber key on the rock crawl section, considering my ground anchor had just given way and it was either that or roll end over end a couple of times a penalty was preferable. I dont know what the other penalty on my score was for maybee you could tell me. I unlike some have never intentionally driven over rope in order to get to a punch or expected to be given the score for a punch if I intentionally drove over the rope to get out. I understand peoples frustration when they see marks that show otherwise. I regularly throw myself into a deliberately hard punch/cyber point at the start of the day knowing that some/most points generally get a lot easyer as the day progresses. I regularly "team up" for one punch as helping get someone through a section quicker enables me to get there quicker and almost ensures a return favour If that competitor sees me in trouble in the future. I did this for Chris at my firs punch of the day punch 1, he helped me out of a particularly nasty bog hole at glyn neath/seven sisters last year. I come to these events to push my self and my vehicle, I want to enjoy the "event" indeed I have quite often done better at an event when I have relaxed thinking that I was way off the pace. I dont want a slanging match here or anywhere else. My alternative interpritation seems to have caused some people some severe offence for which I apologise. I have no issues with marshals paying me fair close attention. I appreciate the thankless job they have to do and thank them for doing it. Neil has a difficult job to do with people complainig to him from all angles. I have no intention of making his job any harder. Alan I hope I can shake your hand/ buy you a pint/ help you out of a bog hole in the near future. I wont be backing down to make your life any easyer at getting to the top I now have even more to prove, that I can still do well, without cheating in your eyes, and marshall scruitiny. now stepping down off soap box
  17. There have been a few(mine and one other that I know of) cases where running 4.75 ratio the bolts which attatch the crown wheel to the diff centre have stretched/worked loose, if this is not picked up and re-tightened / bolts replaced the bolts have been known to come out with disasterous results. In my case I/Gwyn discovered the loose bolts and rectified without any further problems, this was done 3 times, twice on the back, once on the front during 2 years aprox 22 winch challenge comps and a few play days. My guess as to the possible reason for this is that the crown wheel of 4.75 is not bolted directly to the ARB but has to have a spacer plate between the ARB and crown wheel. I guess this combination is more difficult to hold firm together than when the crown wheel is bolted directly to the ARB.
  18. I bought 25l of morris's EP80w90 yesterday and it cost me £50
  19. I used to run Kam 4.75 and managed to break one. I am not sure if I broke the 10 spline ARB end plate/bearing holder first which then flexed causing the C&P to break or if it was the other way round. The component on the ARB was replaced with a stronger fine spline item. When I needed to replace the KAM C&P in a hurry (less than 2 weeks) there was none available, I was told they were on order but other higher paying motorsport had production priority. I changed back to 3.54 and bought an underdrive.
  20. Hi Gordon hope these answers help you. The ram I use is a stock ram which I modify to enable me to have the fixings I require to attach as per steering damper. The ram actually comes to me from Italy through a local hydraulics supplier. The ram stroke is enough to cover the travel required in a land rover system. The ram bore has been experimented with and is the largest bore I can fit that does not affect the "feel" or speed of the steering system whilst not disturbing a stock Land Rover, steering box or pump. The bore can be increased without affecting "feel/speed" if you modify the size of pipes, how you attach your pipework to the steering box and increase the fluid flow to your power steering box. I like the fact that the bore on my system is relatively small in that I can be confident that I am not putting too much extra strain on my steering components further down the line. Is it better to not be able too steer and get out and look why, or to steer the wheels against an immovable object and break track rod ends? Rob
  21. Post is clear as we have grown to expect from a man of your caliber What camera do you use for your photos I need to do a better job for my hydro assist instalation instructions. One point to look out for though is whilst doing this it is worth checking the tension of the bolts going from the support bracket to the steering box, as I have seen these work loose and I have seen the support bracket broken a couple of times. another way to identify worn pan had rod bushes is exessive body (side to side) movement when you rock the steering left and right while stationary.
  22. looking forward to seeing the size of the big grin
  23. Need to remove obout 10' off my front winch rope as it has frayed quite badly in the first section apart from that I havent touched my truck. My co driver is keen for me to put it on the ramp and chek it over, but I have had a quad bike in bits on the ramp for the last 3 months.
  24. What is your starter doing? Some faults are easily repairable. I am interested to know what are the symptoms. These starters as a rule are pretty reliable. If you think it is dead you have got nothing to lose opening it up and having a look. I run an Isuzu engine in my off roader and have fixed my starter before now when it had gumed up with dirt and grime/sludge (deep water off road)
  25. How come my name isn't on the list? I thought I had paid up for the next 4. Have got an e-mail from you confirming this a little while back.
