  1. Hi All, First off apologies i know this has been done to death but i need a answer today if poss. I have a 1995 110 (with 2 inch lift) Disc brakes all round, currently on 265x75x16 KL71s which are getting past their best but okay for using on play days etc I have a set of Disco 1 Alloys in good condition anyway am considering fitting these with A/T tyres, what size would you reccomend and why? Currently thinking either 255x85x16 or 285x75x16, jsut wondered what your experience is of these tyre sizes good and bad. Regards Keith
  2. Hi, when i replaced my rear floor cross members i declined to use the LR made ones as they were a sodding fortune, i used if memory serves 50mm x 10mm x 2mm box section, the box section cost me less for all of it that one cross member. Regards Keith

  7. Hi All, One for the trickery gurus on here. Vehicle is a 1992 110 200tdi, anyway indicators died a death so exchanged the 4 way flasher switch as thats a known fault, lucas unit fitted anyway indicators worked about 8 times then nothing again, no fuses are blowing. Now no indicators but if i use the wipers a "ticking" noise comes from the flasher can (no illumination on dash) which has also been changed for a good known unit. Any ideas before i resort to a can of petrol Regards Keith
  8. Hi, Just priced this up at National Windscreens in Docaster, this price is for one piece glass non-opening and with Limo tint on (dark stuff) £150 for both sides, and i have the choice of using the origonal frames, or going frameless, just window rubber which is the way i think i will go. Regards Keith
  9. Head gasket needs changing, but obviously check all coolant pipes anyway. But would definitely take the head off and check you have not warped the thing. Also check the "P" gasket to see if thats leaking. Head gasket not a big job just done one this morning on a 300tdi. Have a look in the technical archive for the post by Les, excellent if you have never done a head gasket before. Regards Keith
  10. Britpart water pump 3 minutes on a good day, Genuine dependant on mileage, was antifreeze levels correct etc Just changed the wifes 300tdi Disco one, that had been on since new (97) but only done 54000 miles. No real help i know but if its not a genuine pump i would have thought 3 1/2years not bad Regards Keith
  11. Use 6mm bare copper wire glued to inside of window. power her up. Dog only chews it once Sorry Rich better use 10mm in case wife touches it as well Keith
  12. "Lots of people in the UK get the heads skimmed seemingly almost as standard, I am not really sure why. In the back of beyond like here there are simply not any facilities for doing stuff like that anywhere in the country, so people simply don't bother. Unless a head has been properly cooked and warped" Would have to agree with the above about heads being skimmed, only ever had one skimmed and that was after it was well cooked. Just changed a headgasket for a friend and first thing he said was "where do i get it skimmed", i asked him why he wanted it skimming answer was, dont know but every one says on forums get it skimmed. I would think a investment in a good straight edge may be beneficial to a lot of people. Also agree with the comment about tappets being adjusted after a rebuild, its not as if it takes forever to do, or you need a degree in engineering to find out how to do it. Why spend all that time stripping cleaning rebuilding and not set the tappets? just does not make sense TO ME. Regards Keith
  13. Both sorry about the question to many cans of pop when i wrote it The alternator i was going to use one off a 300 tdi (100amp cause i have a couple of spares) Just wondered if there was a way of using a serpentine belt instead of the v belt Regards Keith
  14. Hi All, Son has just bought a 1991 110 200tdi CSW, it is as standard fitted with the old style v belt and 65amp alternator. Is it possible to fit a belt and pullys that are used on the 300tdi? Tried searching but got nowhere Regards Keith
  15. Hi, Just done this on a V8 that had a 6 bolt now has a 4 bolt. Keith
  16. Hi I replaced a kickdown cable i had on a 3.9, if i remember correctly it was easy enough but i had to remove the sump of the autobox. Keith
  17. Hi, A 150amp will do what you want but i would stay away from the cheap units that are available, better to buy a decent make second hand one such as a Butters, Cebora etc than one of the clarke, sip ones IMHO. As for gas if you use the disposable bottles they will cost you a fortune if you need to do any serious amount of work. Far better to get hold of a BOC or Air Products cylinder, that is refillable and will last forever. They are available without officially renting one from BOC etc, and can be exchanged at any agent. I personally would stay away if possible from the pub CO2 bottle unless you have no choice, CO2 is not as good a shield as the others (BOC Argoshield) (Air Products Cougar 7 I think) any way its basically the same Argon mix. Practice practice is the answer to learning to mig weld. Get a few starting tips/help from someone who can mig weld preferably who can be with you when you start to learn. Once you have the mig/gas set up correctly its just a case of practice practice. Start with easy welding, dont try upside down on up/dn runs until you have mastered the basics. Get everything clean and i mean clean not just a wire brush but grinders and discs. Preparation is the important bit if its clean then mig is easy, the times i have seen people trying to mig rusty steel, and failing then blaming the mig. Regards Keith
  18. Hi, There is no number stamped on the vin plate its never that easy My local paint shop had no chips either to match it, so i think its probably unique to LRSA. Caaspian Blue is quite close i think, well put it this way thats what its going to get next time Ref front tyres, does it make that much difference? but i will swap them round if it does. Thanks for the help Regards Keith
  19. Hi All, Does anybody , and i`m sure someone will, what colour metallic blue my 110 is?, all i can tell you is it was built in South Africa so will it be a standard LR colour. Regards Keith [/img]
  20. Never had a problem anywhere in europe apart from at the French customs in Calais. I have 4 jerry cans on the roof rack, and he said i should have stickers on them stating FLAMMABLE lIQUIDS, which i know have and never get stopped. Apart from VOSA a couple of weeks ago were doing a check on vehicles, he checked my cans and questioned me about the "Green Diesel" explained it was from Bosnia or Slovenia, at which point he got very shirty and warned me about importing non duty paid diesel into the UK, it was only in one can. The Traffic Cop who was with him looked at me and shook his head in disgust, and made a very distinctive hand movement behind him Keith
  21. Give Derek at ring at LRS, nice bloke and very knowledgeable, have bought lots of stuff of him ovr the years. Keith

  23. I have done at least 30,000 miles in the last 5 years towing a 3 1/2 twin axle trailer fully loaded across europe including the alps, and had no problems using the auto box, able to keep it at 60 on thje flat no problems, okay some of the long climbs in Austria were a pull but no problem. MPG was on average 22-23. Disco is a 300 with a full width intercooler When in used my V8 3.9 i was frequently down to 12-14 to the gallon. Regards Keith
  24. Hi All, Having just returned from one of my twice yearly trips to Bosnia carrying aid for a charity, this happened to one of our convoy, it was the vehicle in front of me not a pretty site i can tell you seeing a 3 1/2 ton trailer with Disco airborne. I have never been so happy to see anyone covered in blood climbing out of a vehicle. Both people were fine apart from a couple of head cuts and a lot of bruises. Crash happened neat Wurzburg southern Germany on our way to Bosnia,Basically he got a wobble due to the tram lines and lost it.[/img] The German emergency services were superb within minutes 4 fire engines, 2 ambulances and police attended. As he left the road he hit 3 logs about 24" in diameter and 15ft long they launched him airborne doing a compete 360 before he landed, trailer chassiss snapped, axle snapped. But it shows you the strength of a LR, not a pretty site. Both lads carried on with the convoy after a visit to hospital to have their heads super-glued. Regards Keith
