  1. A complete numpty question for you... Will this be a universal fit between the Defender and Disco (bearing in mind the differences between mounting positions on earlier TDi models)? I've never looked under the bonnet of a TD5 Defender... If it is, then I might have to start working on the wife!! She's gradually coming around to the idea of tuning it....for better MPG, of course Hints of a ball park price would be useful if you've got any ideas?? TIA Adrian
  2. Having got the seats and bulkhead removal bar fitted in the 90, I now have the 'challenge' of separating the cabin from the load area in order to comply with most competition/challenge rules and regs. The trouble is, with the bulkhead removal bar (MUD UK one) the standard 90 dog guard won't fit properly and the seats recline too far to enable one to fit where it would conventionally be. I could bring the seats up, but I'm looking for a permanent solution rather than one for a specific outing/event... Question 1 - Would a 110 CSW dog guard fit (you know the one with the lower section between the wheel arches)? Question 2 - How and where do they mount? If it's a case that they mount on the roof/side panel and sidepanel/tub joins, then it should be fairly straight forward to make one fit 9" further back from the standard position, shouldn't it?? I would appreciale any pics of the standard mountings and any pics from those of you who have mounted one in a different position, if there are any... I would also welcome any suggestions from those who compete in 90 HTs as to how they comply with the regs... (I'm specifically looking at JST's 4x4 Adventures rules and regs at the moment but am aware that it was a requirement at other comps I've entered) TIA Adrian PS I'm sure this was covered a while ago, but the search function was used, then verbally abused as putting in a word like 'guard' throws up hundreds of topics about tank/diff/steering guards!!! I even tried Simonr's google method, but no fruit on that tree either!
  3. EP9 from Bowyer?? Even a new TDS in basic form is within your budget... Goodwinch website... My EP9 was quite happy hauling my old Range Rover around. Not exactly quick with that amount of weight hanging on it, but faster than a T-Max or Come-up. I've no experience with the TDS (yet...), but if you have a word with either Mr Bowyer or the HonitonHobbit, you'll gain the views of a couple of people that have given it a good going over! HTH Adrian
  4. My 02 reg Disco 2 misses the VED rise. Just had the reminder/renewal form through and it's still an extortionate £205!! I think the market is slowing down as a whole. Not just cars - we are struggling to sell houses due to the economic slow-down. There is just less money being spent. Apart from on modifications and spares for the 90, of course!! Buyers market at the moment.....
  5. In terms of a spare tyre/wheel for a set of directional tyre you've got 2 options... Buy another directional one and live with it. It's a 50/50 chance... or... Buy a non directional spare in the same size.
  6. I can't help with the model of the turbo, but Les did a write-up a while back about stripping a turbo. Might prove useful if you are planning a dabble. Even though it may not be the same model, it's still a garret turbo he's stripping... Here is the link
  7. You're right he took some crackers!! --> I see that you were moving so fast that it looks like your hands are in your pockets!!!
  8. Nearly missed this! Some years ago I bought a box of recovery kit from a company called Geared To Go It wasn't a package deal, but I rang them up and told them what I needed. At the time it was 3x 4.75T shackles, 2x tree strops of different sizes, 1x large tow-rope. Didn't cost a great deal, but at the end of the day, when you are dangling off the end of a piece of rope with some tonnes of car wrapped around you, you really don't want the cheap stuff!! Not sure if it's been mentioned in this thread already, but don't even think about buying unstamped shackles or unrated strops!!! HTH Adrian
  9. I have speakers mounted in the same place, but instead of thinking about aesthetics, I just got the brackets I had on the shelf (from the rear roof of a RR) and drilled some holes through the roof!! I must say that your way is much better than mine and I bet they sound better too. Mine are a little tinny and need something to cover the backs.
  10. I was more impressed by Suzy Perry soaking wet and gasping for breath!!! That's just me though!!
  11. Whilst I welcome the idea of rugby shirts for the main consumer of such a product (of which I'll be one...) I don't know about their practicality "in the field". In my experience, rugby shirts can get very heavy when wet and take an absolute age to dry out - maybe not the best idea for a group of people who enjoy living in Russian swamps for prolonged periods... Embroidered ones would be good, but I will be buying one whatever they are!
  12. Can't help you with the judder, but running 2 different size tyres on the same axle (and front to back for that matter) is a big no-no. One wheel/tyre will have to travel faster than the other to keep up!! By my calcs, your 2 tyre sizes differ by over an inch
  13. If that's the case and there isn't anything plugged in it, it might not have a fuse in... so you won't get any power to it. I'm a numpty at electrics, though, so you can probably ignore me!! Check the fuse box for empty slots, though!!
  14. None of that came up when I looked the other day!! Probably just me being a computer numpty as usual And the winner was.......................................
  15. Are they still making them?? I had a look the other day and there website has changed and doesn't show any bumpers. Maybe they haven't got that bit of the site uploaded/updated yet??? I would be quite happy to pass folding stuff in Southdown's direction having experienced the Range Rover one...
  16. Courtesy car when the company car is is for a service Seriously, though, Halfords, Motormart, Motaworld, ebay, screwfix all stock them, just a case of finding the right size...
  17. I'll let Mark talk to you and decide, but I could meet you somewhere around Dartford/Swanley during a lunch break or before/after work???
  18. I seem to remember Brownchurch offering a side awning that would mount on on a roofrack, or just on the gutter... Saw it at Billing and was quite impressed by the idea, price and quality... See here...
  19. In hindsight and after the day I've had, that would have been a better plan!! But, alas, the co. car has no fridge, so it would have been mildly chilled at best Must remember to pack a beer into my work bag every morning..............you know..............just in case
  20. Ahhh, the joys of being alive over the taxable age!!! You could always just buy one and pay the tax!! The equivalent of sticking your 2 fingers up!!!
  21. You may find that the TREs vary in size. My greasable ones were considerably larger than the standard ones. This is a good thing, but it means that by measuring end of TRE to end of TRE your set-up won't be right. Instead, measure from the centre of the flat base of the TRE (opposite the threaded bit) on each and make this the same. Fine tuning can be done with string round all 4 wheels/tyres, but I found it didn't help as my tyres are quite bulgy. Remember, turn the steering from lock to lock after adjusting... HTH Adrian
  22. We all know the feeling..... driving along the motorway and something goes wrong. This time it was in the company car... A trip to work is normally quite uneventful along the M20. This morning was different. Mother Nature’s sprinkler system had been activated and the lorries were kicking up a mist of spray. There was I, quite happily trundling up the middle lane (overtaking two lorries) at some miles an hour when the driver’s side wiper blade/arm decides that it’s going to slip on its spindle. It was quite happy to wipe the back of the wing mirror, but not the screen!! So.....in a few moments I’d managed to slow down, get to the hard shoulder and get out to investigate. Remembering I’d got no tools on board, I’m thinking “how do I fix this, then??” I got the keys out of the ignition to open the bonnet to get at the mechanism to see if a nut had come loose (had it all apart last week for a new windscreen), but nothing obvious apart from a collection of small metal filings on the valence. “How do I fix this??” I thought to myself........................................... Jangling the keys in my hand with lorries rushing past in the pouring rain I had an Einstein moment!! My keyring happens to be one of X-Eng’s finest and hence has 13mm and 10mm spanner cut-outs. GENIUS!!! Took the arm assembly off to see that all of the splines on the spindle and the arm have disappeared and the whole thing relies on friction to activate. Obviously the removal and refitting last week had disturbed the ‘bond’ that had been created over 5 years of abuse as a company car (at this point I add that I’ve only had it for 3 months). Did the 13mm nut up F'ing tight and took a slow trundle to work with the wipers off!!! I can’t praise this simple idea enough!! Nice one Si!!! Saved me 2 hours of sitting on the motorway embankment in the rain and the company a recovery charge. Sorry for the mildly OT post, but credit where credit is due and all that!!
