  1. Cheers guys. We did first suspect the head gasket, but there is no sign of anything around the no. 3/4 piston. I have noticed a black smear of oil running around the bellhousing now, though....... Dan - is the cam bearing relatively straight forward to replace? I guess it would be easier with the head on the bench, so replacing the head gasket while we're doing it can't hurt...????? Anyone got a part number for the cam bearing in a 91 200TDi Defender?? I can give the VIN and Engine No by PM if it will help...
  2. Just in case anyone reading thinks that I am having a pop at the previous owner, I'm not!! The engine has been faultless until this last weekend. Anyway...any suggestions, anyone??
  3. I know!! A warranty...............from Mr Watts......................yeah!! Right-ho!!
  4. I wonder if anyone might be ale to shed some light on this subject? Whilst parking the car at silly angles during JSTs last event at Wellington the oil light would flicker for a few seconds every now and then. After 2 hours of the drive home, we stopped at a petrol station to refuel and when on tick-over the oil light flashed like a mad flashing thing on national flashing day!!! Open the bonnet and there is steam coming from the filler cap and a nice spread of oil all over the engine bay, under the car and up the back end! After a litre of oil and some hours more driving, I pulled up at home and it happened again. Has this happened to anyone before, or can someone offer some pointers as to why it might be doing it?? The best I can do is suggest that the crank case is being over pressurized, but that's as far as my knowledge goes.... TIA Adrian
  5. He was, but we weren't using much "enthusiasm"!! It was lots of little shunts backwards and forwards to turn round between trees and drop-offs!!
  6. Well, that was a day (or 2!!) After changing starter motors and batteries before leaving yesterday, we got to the side with a slight alternator problem.....thanks to Simonr and Mr Watts for suggsting we give the brush packs a good clean!! Started the event about 10 minutes after everyone else and managed 2 punches before blowing a front diff. Finally got out of the second punch after 1.5 hours of body, snorkel and bumper modification!! As Mr Lovejoy suggests, we couldn't fault the TDS. It just doesn't slow down under load - very impressive bit of kit! Cheers to James and the sponsors for setting it all up and letting us amateurs enter!
  7. Simon is the best one to ask. He'll know exactly what it fits... Drop him a PM. He's normally more than happy to offer advice.
  8. Loving the pic of the stig on his summer hols, too!! Nice touch!
  9. One of each, I feel. For the team...............like!!
  10. Is there a chance that the brake pipe is kinked or been squashed at some point along it's run. Other than a sticking caliper, that's the only thing I can think of.
  11. I don't think Bish will be doing anything that may get even close to needing a DVLA/VOSA inspection!!! I'm very jealous, Bish!! If I knew 90s came with straight panels, I'd have waited for one to come along!!! :-)
  12. Nooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not another one of Walfy's Town Centre mystery tours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not just the directions, just wondering if there is any other info I need. I know I can turn up and attend the briefing, but there's nothing like being prepared...
  13. I know I was rather slow at responding to your 'test' email, but I've not received any further emails from you James....
  14. The split charge system I can't help much with other than to say that plenty of people are running the X-Charge without issues... Mounting the winch solenoids up in the wing is a good plan and something I will be looking into. The bigger the cable the better, IMO, but I am no sparky!!! As for plugging the handset in, either hard wire an internal control to the cab (I used a bit of 3-core rubberised flex cable and a switch from David Bowyer - at Goodwinch), or remove the socket from the solenoid box, extend the wires and mount it somewhere more convenient. You could even do both for those occasions when you are respooling the rope on your own... HTH Adrian
  15. I run them in 255/55/18 size on the Disco 2. Very good all round tyre for the type of stuff that I do with it. The main benefit has been the on-road stability. It doesn't wander from where I point it now, whereas on the Goodyear Wranglers, it was always following the smallest of rut in the road. Done about 9k miles on them and there is no sign of any real amount of tread wear. If you want a decent price, Matt, try RM Tyres on the Medway City Estate (Strood). They beat everyone I rang by a country mile and they were even cheaper than the Goodyear Wranglers in the same size.........but mine are an 18" rim... Their price is all-in, too.
  16. I think an orange version would suit me down to the ground... Nice work Si. Being that I am a complete IT numpty, would it function well running from a memory card in a PDA?
  17. I can't help with the roll bar aspect of the question, but the bulkhead removal bar is something I recently spent some time looking at. There are 2 options: 1. North Off Road - 3rd item down on the page. 2. MUD UK - what I went for. The North Off Road item is considerably more expensive than the MUD UK one, but it completely removes the bulkhead. The MUD one only lowers it. I found the MUD one better as it still gives a solid separator to hold stuff back in the load area. If you speak to North Off Road, they may be able to customize one to allow you to fix a harness to it.......you never know!! Hope that helps a little... Adrian

If it's ABS, then yes and it's quite time consuming!! Link in the index of the Tech Archive under Brakes etc: Bleeding ABS on a Range Rover
  19. You can either pop to a few local exhaust places and see what they've got in the scrap bin, or buy all of the custom parts from somewhere like Jetex and make it up as you go along. I don't think there is a right or wrong way to do it. If you use s/h bits from the skip, you will be limited by what you can find in the right diameter. Previously I made an altered tailpipe for the Range Rover using bits from the skip, a load of fire/exhaust putty and some exhaust clamps.
  20. I have these in my 90 after first ruling out the Cobra bucket seats for being too much effort to get in and out of. The Ripspeed ones are mane by Cobra and come with a slightly smaller price tag. If you buy them off of the world's favourite auction site you'll find them at a fraction of the price cos no-one thinks they are any good I got mine with a pair of Cobra runners, then went to Exmoor Trim and ordered the Cobra subframe adaptors. I looked into making up the required bracket, but exmoor sell them for £17ish so it wasn't worth the hassle!! At the same time, I fitted an extra spacer under the rear of the subframe to allow the runners to clear the lip on the seat box.
  21. One of the best things about them is that they are square inside (well, rectangular, but you know what I mean!!) so they are easy to pack. Most of the cheaper Tesco/B&Q items have rounded internal corners so you end up with loads of wasted space. I can also stand on mine, which is quite a feat as I'm not a small chap!! I, too, use the 35L ones and 2 of them fit comfortably between the wheel arches of the 90. I will be on the lookout for a wide shallow box in the near future (like Fridgefreezer has) to store long stuff in, but also to put under the other 2 so that I can secure them down better. At the moment, they are only about 1.5" above the wheel arch box so holding them down is a bit tricky...
  22. Jase/Paul - Ta for the UK Covers link. I shall be investigating further. Walfy - I already have a body bag in the garage for when I replace the patio....;-) It won't need a window..... Night Train - The seats are too wide at the shoulders to get standard ones over... I tried with my Exmoor trim set from the Disco!! Chris - as ever, your practicality hits home hard, but I paid substantially less for the seats I have than I would have for a decent (or new) set of LR vinyl ones!! And these are wonderfully comfortable, if a tad prone to collecting mud. I had a look around an agricultural supplies place on my way to Hastings the other day and they only stocked standard ones.
  23. But that would get all over the seat and go all sticky in the summer ......
  24. Having spent an extended lunch break trying to find a set, I'm all out of ideas. I have a set of Cobra sports seats like these from Halfords (no I didn't spend that much on them) and I would like to protect them from dirt and grime so that SWMBO can still come out for a play on the odd occasion and not bend my ear about the state of her sit-upon!! Any ideas of a source for some waterproof covers? I've tried Exmoor, Halfords, ebay and a whole host of other motor accessory places, but to no avail!! Most of them offer standard covers, but the side bolsters and shoulder supports won't allow them to fit... TIA Adrian
