  1. Colin Not sure about colours but, the dash charging light for the alternator should have a wire from the alternator. This supplies 0v when the alternator is not charging. When the alternator starts charging it rises to 12v. The other side of your dash light should have an ignition switched 12v supply. So alternator not charging and the light comes on, alternator charging and it supplies 12v to both sides of the lamp thus the lamp goes out. HTH Ivan

    LT77

    My V8 LT77 definitely has the bogbrush oil cooler for the gearbox. I was just wondering if Tdi ones did as well. Rgds Ivan

    As it says above will an LT77 from a Tdi fit a V8 ? Also do Tdi gearboxes have an Oil cooler ? Thnx Ivan

  6. An aquaintance of mine has a 38a Rangie. It's fitted with the Harman Kardon (sp?) ICE system. He is after some information on how to make it use a separate Amp and the standard speaker system. So anyone got a wiring diagram or know anything about this system ? As for me I know naff all about ICE etc. TIA Ivan
  7. Actually saw one of those when we went on a trip to the Pyranees. They are very good but a tad awkward to put up. I am sure with some practice you could put it up very easily. I must admit I do prefer a ground tent when we are travelling. It means you can set up camp and still drive the vehicle somewhere. With a roof tent you either have to take it down or make sure you are setttled for the night before you set up camp. I had roof lights on the Disco and in all the trips I have done I have only ever used them to shed some light when setting up camp. During my 3 years in Oz I never used them at all and I avoided driving at night. All I had on the Disco in the way of protection was a steering guard, front diff guard and a Cargo Barrier (bit like a dog guard but much stronger). Nearly forgot I also have a winch bumper fitted but only really needed the winch in Russia and Croatia. In Oz, Morroco and Libya we mainly used snatch straps for recovery. HTH Ivan

    Overdrive

    To be honest I think they all whine. I had one fittedn to my Series III it whined whenever it was engaged. I had it completely rebuilt and it still whined. BTW you are not supposed to use the overdrive in low range. HTH Ivan
  10. It's not a flapper it's a Lucus 14CUX. I think it's located somewhere behind the dash board. It's a long time since mine had a 200 body fitted so I can't remember sorry. On a 300 series it's behind the washer bottle. Ivan

  12. Thanks for that Pete. Yes it's a Disco 1. I will disconect the sensors at the inner wing connection. I am a bit nervous about pulling out ABS sensors and then trying to get them back in in case I don't do it right. If I get it wrong it's a trip to the local independant for £45+ worth of testbook. Ivan
  13. Need to change the swivel hubs on my Disco. I have read the articles by Les in the tech forum and it seems fairly easy. Only question I have is that it is fitted with ABS. Do I just unplug the sensors and do they replug in easily enough ? Or do I just hang the hub off the front spring and leave the ABS sensors connected ? TIA Ivan
  14. I am with NFU and I must say they have been very good to me. When I went to Morroco and Libya they included a green card for both places free. Saved me buying insurance at the border. I have breakdown with GEM but when I went to the Pyranees recently no-one would cover me as the car was 16yrs old. Phoned NFU and they said they would cover me for £26 for 30 days. I explained the cars age and she said Oh in that case it will be more money. Waited for the new cost and it was £31 for 30 days. They will cover a car up to 20Yrs old for that price. Ivan
  15. Paintman Not sure about the vacuum advance. The garage he took it to seemed to make it run better. If the new dizzy cap and rotor arm don't work. Not sure it has a throttle potentiometer as it's a 300 series which means Lucas14Cux Efi. I would love to megasquirt it but he is in Spain and I am in England. I must admit if all else fails it may be megasquirted. Rgds Ivan
  16. Not on normal gentle driving. Only when he tries to use the kick down. I have arranged for a genuine OEM dizzy cap and rotor arm to be sent to him. We will try this and see what happens. I must admit £30 is way cheaper than the £3000 he has been quoted. Ivan
  17. My Father has a 1998 Discovery 3.9V8i Auto. After running the car for a while, when you try and use the kick down it missfires. Unfortunately he has just moved to Spain so I am not able to help him. It's done about 50,000 miles and is in good nick. When we first went to Spain (in November) it was missfiring badly. Having no tools I was unable to help him. He took it to a local Land Rover dealer who "did something to the distributor". I think they probably reset the timing. It now runs a lot better but he is still having the problem with the kick down. Done so far New plugs and leads (Genuine) Timing reset I am going to send a new coil over to be fitted and an new distributor cap and rotor arm. Any thing else I may have missed ? Also does anyone know a decent Land Rover mechanic in the Murcia region of Spain? He took it to another mechanic who told him it was the gearbox and it would cost about £3000 to repair so they are trying to take him for a ride. Any help most appreciated. TIA Ivan
  18. My V8 Discovery does exactly the same. It's never overheated even when in Libya. So I assume it's just the norm. HTH Ivan
  19. Not sure about the strength when lifting. I swapped the body on my Disco for a 300 Series ES version. However we lifted the old body off using jacks and some plasterers trestles. Then rolled out the chassis on it's discs (so the engine would clear the old bodywork) and rolled it under the new body (the discs were replaced afterwards). It's pretty straight forward. Ivan
  20. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the socket on a Warn XD9000i ? The wire colours are white, red, green, brown and black. I took the winch apart to clean it and paint it. I made a careful note of where the wires went in the socket and like a muppet lost my diagram. TIA Ivan
  21. ^^^ Wot he said. If you have a winch why not use it in the first place ? Something Iwas told many years ago was to join 2 strops using a piece of wood which should break before a mounting point (not talking about a pick elve here). That way if the wood breaks you don't have a metal shackle flying about. It surprising how much energy a piece of wood will take before it breaks. Ivan
  22. Just did the same on my 1996 90 on Sunday. Bulb went so I brought a new one. Got home and realised it was a sealed beam. Doh!!! So back to the shop and got a couple of Halogen conversion. Much better and brighter light. As Fridge says it's just a screwdriver job. Ivan
  23. On Les's recommendation I have just ordered the Bearmach kit from my local independant. They did not know about the kit but were very impressed with what you got. It was only about £70 as well. HTH Ivan
  24. I recently paid £120 for my Bosch starter motor. Had 3 prestolites fitted and they all packed up inside 3 months. At least my supplier fitted the last one for free (others were fitted by my local mechanic). As Les said buy Bosch or Valeo the prestolites are cr*p. Rgds Ivan
