  1. assuming you have the rear sunroof, the drains run down both sides, and the C-pillars. By the sound of it, maybe one side has become disconnected at the sunroof, and allowed water to drain into the shell? Probably worth checking the drains on the sunroof anyway, whilst repairing the rust...
  2. Cool, I'll strip the rangie swivels and see what I can make use of then before I strip a perfectly good disco axle... Cheers Mark
  3. thanks james. nowhere near a parts book at the mome! might take you up on the offer though, as it's the nearside that is dead... cheers mark
  4. i have a 2001 td5 defender, with a knackered swivel ball... as far as i am aware this axle is the same as the 300 tdi defender front axle. i also have a 91 disco front axle (imperial, fat mushroom style shafts) and some swivels from a mid eighties rangie, both of which have really good chrome balls. can anyone confirm or otherwise if i can use the chrome balls off the disco or rangie axles on the defender? cheers mark
  5. I'm sorry, I don't understand. This is a really good technical thread about an innovative and interesting modification the OP has done to his defender - exactly the sort of thing this place is for. Excellent. For some reason, the only input from a number of people was to get into defender vs disco arguments - not constructive or helpful or even particularly amusing tbh. So Steve removed them to keep this thread on topic - exactly the job of the moderator - I would have done exactly the same thing to preseve the usefulness of this thread. Everyone, read the forum charter - this is a tech forum. Non Tech stuff will be moderated - always has been, always will be. [/rant] Mark
  6. Kev, any intention to include Doublecabs? I'll happily Measure for you. Mark
  7. I have a sealy 2.25t professional quality Jack that I have had for about 8 years. Bought from my local motor factor, and came with a pair od decent axle stands (was on offer). Much like this one, and a similar sort of price (slightly less I think): It is quite big, and it's quite heavy, but it is far nicer to use that any of the cheaper ones I have used with a similar (generally 2t) rating. It has a nice big plate on the lifting arm, so a diff fits in it nicely, and it has no problem lifting one end of the truck up. If you are happy to spend the money, then I would go down this route. hth Mark
  8. Yes they will fit - or at least they do on my standard 110, with 150k mile old suspension... They are slightly different rolling diameter, but having done exactly the same on mine, I haven't noticed much difference to speak of as a result of the size change. My speedo now reads ~1 mph under compared to my satnav. hth Mark
  9. 101 axles are pretty much unique to 101's so probably not what zim is after. Don't know about leafers, but the Coil Sprung front Salisburies were fitted to the Northern Irish Armoured 110's (Shortlands?) Other than armoured variants, I am not aware of anything else being fitted with a salisbury front axle... hth Mark
  10. James, There are a couple here that should accept that 'toungue', they are bolt down, but they are on sft stalks, rather than wires. They are here if you want them though. Cheers Mark
  11. James, there are various Disco and Rangie ones here if you want to have a root around? Mark
  12. Phil, It routes through the gap between the chassis and the tub on the passenger side, and is clipped into place at the rear of the wheelbox. hth Mark
  13. The x-charge system is more than up to the task of a standard winch on the likes of a disco - I ran one for several years - and am still running one on my defender. The issues have arrisen where people are running multiple winches possibly with multiple motors on each winch. hth Mark
  14. Could we please keep the discussions within the bounds of the techincal nature of this forum? Conjecture as to the sellers intent, as implied by thier typing ability is for somewhere else other than here. Thanks Mark
  15. what kev said, but it should be an R380 on a 300tdi disco... Assuming of course that it's a manual. If it's an Automatic, then it will be a zf 4hp22 hth Mark
  16. To be fair, its a very simple mechanism - so hardly worthy of the 'more things to go wrong' argument, which usually applies to the likes of air suspension and abs... I have seen the antiroll bar in question - the prototype has been on the back of Simon's truck for the best part of 2 years as it was developed and tested, and I have had a good look several times. The ability to have softer springs on the back, but still maintain decent road holding is a massive advantage, and this achieves it with very little in the way of 'things to go worng' - it is essentially a halfshaft and a freewheeling hub - both of which have been in use on land rovers since the dawn of time. Cheers Mark
  17. As Mr Orange said, we had an excellent day. I have just about stopped hurting... The score card makes for very interesting reading - it was very close, and the handicap system really does make it interesting, particularly given that the guys who won were on thier first event! Big thanks to everyone concerned - paul, lucy, sara, et al. I have also never been involved in a funeral procession for a car that kept wanting to escape either... When's the wake Kelly? Cheers Mark
  18. Whilst I realise this is an iPhone/Megasquit conversation, and I have neither, I would be very interested in a TD5 (ie OBDII) + any browser type thing (as I suspect asking if anyone is considering writing a maemo5 based app is even less likely)... Just thought I would mention it.. Mark
  19. Kev, I think I have a genuine albright here if you want to try it out. I am assuming you are looking at electrical grmlins as well as the nasty mechnical sounding ones your winch was making.... Mark
  20. I have a 2001 TD5 in completely basic spec - no immobiliser, abs, aircon or anything that talks to the ECU. I also have an ECU from a later (2003) vehicle with the flashable ECU, however, I strongly suspect this vehicle did have an immobiliser. I have plgged the new ECU into my truck, and it would crank, but not start - hence my suspicions about the immobiliser. I have not yet plugged the new ECU into any Diagnotics, so this may be a little premature, however, if my issue was the lack of an immobiliser, how easily can I convince the new ECU that it doesn't need one? Cheers Mark
  21. Before this weekend steve, I would have agreed with you. However, having spent the day battling an ARB that did not want to stay enganged or disengaged, the ability to open the diff cover and poke it without dismantling the whole axle would have been really useful. We discovered the fault within 5 minutes of starting the event, so having established that the issue was in fact diff related we chose to live with it rather than strip the axle down. Taking the pan off, and dealling with the offending seal (or bodging it one way or another) would have been really useful.... I have to admit, I am not sure I would pay the price, but it doesn't seem unfair given the manufacturing processes involved. I also think that Fridge's point was that it is being sold on it's aesthetic properties, rather than it's protection ablitites. Fashion seems to be a very strange thing, and I would never claim to understand it, but I am afraid I agree with Fridge that it really has come to something when you can buy cast red diff protection as a fashion accessory.... 22. Cellular Data? I can get internet radio on my phone in my car without any wires....
  23. Chris, I have always found Becker and Blaupunkt units to be the most restrained, and OEM looking, and I they do now offer some DAB units. I have also found a number of sellers selling 'Mech Free' head units - ie they don't have a CD or tape mechanism in them at all like this one albeit without DAB... Personally I found DAB in the car not to be as good as I had hoped - as you move it needs to retune, and it seems to need to do this very regularly, which gets annoying. Mine was a Sony DAB tuner that was in my Focus. just a thought Mark
