  1. With the mounting points effectively in line with the centre line of the drum, surely it doesn't matter if the rope comes off the top or te bottom of the drum? The bolts will see the same force either way... ??? Mark
  2. Stewart and Stevenson and therefore Pinzgauer are both part of Armor Holdings, who are american... Armor holdings recently got bought out by BAe So I guess they are back british again...
  3. Is Al likley to need the former in the next two years??? it's unlikely [in Jez & John's absence I feel someone has to keep up the take the mick out of Al traditions... ] Mark
  4. You could check the last shires seven sisters thread from when we took a couple of 6x6's to play with... The tyres are 285/75 BFGs.... Cheers Mark
  5. Nige, Have you tried Premier Supply in Guildford? I am likely to be dropping in there Friday lunchtime if you want me to pick you some up? give me a ring, or a pm or whatever. Cheers Mark
  6. Jamie, You often see those sort of steps at a chandlery for narrow boats...
  7. Don't bother with the handbrake shoes - just fit an x-brake and stop worrying about it... Mark
  8. I have a QT slider one on the rear of the disco. It works well, and is very easy to fit (even after it has been sat on a few times) although it does lose you about 10 -12mm of ground clearence. Personally, if I was building an axle from an empty casing outwards, I would put the effort in to replace the diff pan with a Drain Cap (as per BBC's thread a while ago) - it is neater, stronger, and dosn't lose you any ground clearence. It also does not fill up with mud, and make changing diffs even more miserable... just my thoughts. Cheers Mark
  9. First job I did on my disco when I got it was a new rear floor and both sills. The rear floor was completley rotten, as was a lot of the metal work around it, so it got a replacement panel from paddocks, replacement floor support members, and a number of fabricated parts for the rest of the floor. This sills I repaired by cutting the bottom out of the sill as it was completely rotten, and welding in 3mm wall box section into the cavity, extending down to the position of the orginal sill. This gives a much stronger sill, and I am not scared by nast breakovers now - and I have tested them on more than a few occasions! Sadly i don't have any pictures from this exercise, as I had 9 days to do floor, sills, suspension, bumpers, brakes and general servicing ready for a trip to wales.... Enjoy, and wait till you have to do the inner wings too.... Cheers Mark
  10. I was under the impression that the Pinzgauers were the vehicle of choice to replace the Land Rovers. Whether this is a UK thing or worldwide I don't know. Mark
  11. Excellent Pix there Graham. I guess there are some of Simon's in that album too?
  12. ... and a new t-shirt too....
  13. Mine just arrived on my desk! looks excellent, good work Jim. Are we going to start a rogue's gallery of people modelling thier shirts? or is that too much to handle at this hour??? Mark
  14. oooh sounds nasty les I have done that too welding in short sleeves and no gloves - not to the same extent as you but I learnt my lesson! back on topic, I used to use an eBay auto-darkening helmet that I bought from the states for about £30. For the money it was great, but then I bought myself a speedglas 9000x and the difference is like night and day! If you can find a decent deal on eBlag then it is well worth spending the money. Cheers Mark
  15. Yep. Comes in an aerosol with Acid Etch written on the side... Mark
  16. Si, I think the inverter was to drop the 24V of the 101 down to 12V... Mark
  17. I belive he is currently attempting to get his 109 ready to go to russia.... check the petal build thread for John's current stuation...
  18. I believe the sills are structural to the body. I replaced both of mine when I got the car as it had failed on the sills - there was very little metal left in mine, but I don't know how much corrosion is allowed...
  19. That is useful stuff to know... I take it you were doing a lefthand drive to righthand drive conversion at the same time??? Cheers Mark
  20. I am afraid I work in weybridge, surrey, so every other car is a D3 or Rangie Sport. I must see upwards of 30 on my way to work. Plenty of defenders too, since I live in the slightly more agricultural depths of west sussex. You're not the only one who goes spotting though.... Mark
  21. I have used silicone on winscreens in the past, on my series, but I wuld have thought the ideal would be something like sikaflex windscreen sealent. I am afraid I don't know where to get it from - the last time I aquired some I asked a windscreen fitting place where to get it, and they very kindly gave me a tube! might be worth a try... Cheers Mark
  22. As it happens, Si has had the X-brake approved by the ARC as a safetly improvement and not a modification, so running one shouldn't put you into a modified class. Mark
  23. Most Engine driven air-con compressors have an electricly operated clutch as well, so presumably that would also need to be 24V.. Mark
  24. With all due respect chaps, the Mike Wolfe was £100 a team, for one days competition.... 2 days for £200??? dosn't seem stupid.
