  1. I have the D-Rings like those on my IIA: The front holes were already drilled in this bumper, but seemingly in the wrong place! Normally you would have to drill them anyway. Most of the force goes through the back two bolts, the fronts are mainly there to stop it twisting. On the lightweight, I had a nato hitch on the front bumper, in the same place as your holes are drilled. On a Lightweight however, there is a pice of angle iron welded between the dumbirons, and I still used an 8mm spreader on the front and a 10mm one on the back: Personally, with your truck, I would go for the D-Rings, and use a bridle between them... hth Mark
  2. I am using a snorkel top from southdown, so I won't be able to swing it round backwards. It is also pretty low down (for a snorkel...) so as not to get caught on trees and the like, again making rotation difficult. I guess using a forward facing top in heavi rain is going to have a reasonable scoop type effect, so from the sounds of it, the ideal solution is to retain the ability to drain the airbox manually, either by a bit of pipe, or a tap or something... I am liking the adapter to small pipe, and then a one way valve idea.
  3. I am starting to fit a raised air intake to the disco, and I was wondering about what people do about the drain valve on the airbox... It doesn't seem to be the best seal, so leaving it there seems counter to the idea of sealing the system. However, I am sure there must be the odd bit of condensation that needs to get out? Anyway, the way I see it, I do one of the following: 1) leave the drain as it is, as it seals well enough... 2) remove the rubber valve thing, and blank it off... 3) replace the rubber valve thing with some kind of tap that I can manually drain the airbox.. Any suggestions or ideas? Cheers Mark
  4. Still not sure which bit you mean Will - got a picture? By my definition the pawl is the bit that engages with the toothed wheel...(see picture..)
  5. I would recommend doing a MiG class. It is the easiest of the various disciplines to pick up intitally, and should let you do pretty much everything you need to do on a land rover, until you get into exotic materials or really thin panel work... I did a class that was 50/50 Gas and Mig. The Gas stuff was good, and I learnt a lot, but don't have a gas setup at home. I bought my Mig after doing some classes, and really, the classes were just a safe way of getting into the whole game. the skill comes with practice.... HTH Mark
  6. Mine doesn't have a bearing in it either???? My brake pawl had a habit of sticking so I made a small bronze bush for it, and keep it well lubricated. I can't imaging there is much room for a bearing... However, bearings can be specced by Outer diameter, inner diameter and width, so should be fairly easy to find knowing those dimensions... Mark
  7. Yep, been through all the fault codes, cleared it, driven it, and looked at the list of fault codes again... then took the bulb out...
  8. good thought Chris - that should work well.
  9. Why not just bolt two together back to back? Can't think of any 'double' type clampy things though...
  10. I don't know if they still do them, but halfrauds used to do an 'industrial' version of thier toolboxes in black. I have the black version of this one, and have always been very pleased with it. One thing I found has helped though is to attach a couple of flight case handles to the ends of the box rather than relying on the single handle on the top. It's easier to carry with any decent amount of weight in, and means you are not relying on the hinge and the catch. Mine is full of spanners and sockets so it's kinda heavy!
  11. I had a problem on mine to get it to stay in difflock, which got resolved by making a slighlty longer linkage, but it sounds like you need to get the mechanism loosened off first... enjoy
  12. If we are talking Disco 1, the it has probably never been used! Crawl underneath and give it a liberal sqirt of penetrating oil to loosen in up - even better get someone else to crawl underneath and squirt while you wiggle the lever... If we are talking D2, then some of them were never fitted with them... What car have you got? Mark
  13. Does anybody know the thread for the grease nipple on the sliding joint? My Disco seems to have had the nipple replaced with a bolt (less useful for greasing...) so I want to fit a nipple... Any clues? ta Mark
  14. Mark

    first mot

    sounds like a result
  15. ..who I believe share a director or two with scrapiron...
  16. I have one of these: Rolson 24V Impact Wrench I don't use it every day so didn't feel the need to spend loads of money. It comes with two batteries and a fast charger, and has always done what I have asked of it. I usually keep it in the truck, so it gets bashed about a bit. It will happily change a set of landy wheels over, so for the money I didn't think it was at all bad. Cheers Mark
  17. Chris, Half term for Surrey and W. Sussex would be Sat 20th thru to sun 28th. I would guess that it would be a similar time throughout the country... Mark
  18. definitely interested... either weekend would be ok but how about either of the two weekends afterwards???
  19. I think if you are using rope, you should know how to splice it, so the thimble comng off the end really should be an issue, as it can then just be looped round and spliced into itselt. I would have thought that if you were savvy enough to be using the kit, you should know how to fix it 'in the field' too... Otherwise, it is quite interesting reading. I guess they were limiting themselves to electric winches, hence not using the milemarker hydraulic affair.... I havn't got as far as reading the install articles, but I do wonder if the battery/cable/charging setups were sufficiently similar to be compared? more reading required I guess... Mark
  20. Nah, my Mrs is a complete Pink Floyd nut... seems to be either that or Muse that she listens to at the moment! Music-wise, personally: Linkin Park - anything, but particularly the remix albums (reanimation and collision course), Nine Inch Nails - pretty hate machine (good call ), ..and all that could have been David Arnold/Propellorheads - on her majesty's secret service (It's only a single but at 12 minutes long it feels like an album!) A good selection of 'Shine' compilations and various other Indie/rock compilation albums! Enjoy, I'm not jealous at all.... Mark
  21. Am using Sumo bars (from QT) on the disco after bending the track rod on lane from hell on it's first time out! So far they have proved excellent. Tim, have you got a steering guard on the front? Might be able to deflect the damaging scenery away from the drag link.... Cheers Mark
  22. I would go for a superwinch EP9 if buying new. It has sealed solenoids and is a good winch. Otherwise look for a secondhand husky. You don't sound like you need the complication of hydraulic when electric will do the job you need.... Cheers Mark
  23. Persoanlly, I like memory map running on my Ipaq. It uses OS maps and can use aerial photos too, and is dead easy to use. Cheers Mark
