  1. Just curious really, but this kinda came out of the 'Tool and Fab' forum discussions... Personally, I pretty much use the 'View New Posts' Page as my way of using the forum. I only ever drop into the specific forums to post a new question. I find this means it dosn't matter what forum the post is made in, if it looks interesting, I'll read it! I think the functionality is worth promoting, since it gets round the 'I didn't see it cos I don't look in the centre-steer forum' issues. Cheers Mark
  2. That will be the chap I went to see on my way home this evening then... Bought a recovery strop off him, for use on the back of the disco, and he then explained to me how to achieve what I had failed to the previous eveining. He trades as InsideOut 4x4 and his number is 07814986622. It turns out I have bought stuff from him at sodbury too. Cheers Mark
  3. Ah, that explains a lot....
  4. Thanks Bish, well remembered! Mark
  5. Chaps, Quick question about strps and strop ratings... If something is being marked as being x tonnes SWL this is a rating for lifting, yes? Firstly, what is the safety factor of lifting equipment? 5 ? if so, thensomething marked as 2t swl should be safe for 10t pulling (rather than lifting). Am I correct in this assumption? If so what rating should I get on a strap that I intend to use for recovery purpuses on a Disco? I am thinkin in terms of 5t or 8t? Ta Mark
  6. I think this is a good idea. The pirate threads are good and interesting, but the links to sears or Harbour Fright are all a bit pointless for a UK resident. Cheers Mark
  7. After a little more investigation, the temp guage does move up about a quarter of an inch when good and warm. I have also remade the connection onto the sender so hopefully this should give a better reading but we will see on the next run out... Cheers Mark
  8. Les, He certainly seemed alive in the Pub last night.... The X-Therm switches are listed on the website too, so it might be worth an email direct. Cheers Mark
  9. Not sure if you are planning to stay with the cigarette lighter type socet or change connectors but I use these: and these on whatever it is I'm plugging in: They are 3 pin XLR connectors. Usually I use the Neutrik type, but there are several manufacturers. Three pins means I can wire them up as a permanent live and an ignition switched live for whatever it is I am using. You can get good water proof covers for the sockets too. The plugs lock into the socket nicely so yhey don't work loose. It does mean things need to be rewired to use them, but I also carry an XLR-Fag lighter socket lead for plugging other stuff in with! here is one installed in the lightweight: (incidentally, there is also a 12V cigarette lighter socket that I found in the local caravan shop...) Hope that helps Mark
  10. I thought I had this sorted, but it would turn out not! I want some MTs for the Disco. I decided that 235/85 was too tall without changing the Transfer Box. So I was going to stick with the 70 Profile. I have 255/65 ATs on at the moment, so thought sticking with 255s would be good, but it has been suggested the 255 is too wide. Do I stick with 235/70-16? It might seem a little narrow after the 255s is all? I am running stock Disco Steel Rims. Aaaaargh.... Mark
  11. Chris we have booked for dinner at the Farm, just cos it was easy. Not had an email, so I presume we are still booked! Mark
  12. Hello Ben, Welcome to the Forum. I would second the compliments on you choice of vehicles! Cheers Mark
  13. Just rang Land Rover dealer to get a price and the loops (RRC3588) are £10 each! the backing plates are 40p each.... Mark
  14. The temperature guage on my disco dosent appear to be working. Is this a common problem? Is there a common solution? Any hints on where to look first, to get this sorted quickly would be much appreciated! Don't fancy driving to wales on an engine I don't know the history of without a temp gauge... Cheers Mark
  15. Ralph, as ever you are a star! Cheers Mark
  16. 1991 200 Tdi Disco - I need to screw down the round cover that goes over the fuel tank access hole in the rear floor. To do this I need the little plasic inseerts that go in the square holes. Does any have a part number for them? ta Mark
  17. Woohoo! The Disco Passed first time (after some major sill/rear floor reconstructive surgery) so it is all systems go for friday. Still got a few bits to fit, but should get that done before the week is out! B) Mark
  18. Trev, Silly Calendar question, but is it possible to change the layout of the calendar - I think it would make it easier to read if it a week was monday - sunday, rather than splitting the weekend? Most of the events we do are weekend based, or run say friday to sunday, so that layout would be easier to view. Obvioulsy, if the layout is set by the software, then igore me! Cheers Mark
  19. Got to admit that I know very little about bikes - my passion has always had 4 (or more) wheels! I like the idea of the jap cars, but driving is about an experience as much as the reliability etc of the car for me. I have always found the Jap motors kinda soulless, even the 4x4's. With a Brit Motor there is always more to the drive. Having said that, my first car (other than the IIa) was a nissan cherry - very reliable, very cheap to run, and dead simple to repair (when I blew the engin through neglect!). Since then I have had German cars - VWs and now an Audi Quattro. The Germans seem to have got the idea of reliablity, a bit of character and quality into the same package. Personally, I think the Brits have the best designs and engineers (just look at the top designers in motorsport - they are all british) but they just can't do production. </2p> Mark
  20. Assuming the Disco gets an MoT tomorrow, I am still going..... Mark
  21. The P38 bumper was made by Nick Watts (Rogue Vogue) as a one off for Steve and like a lot of things Nick makes it is indeed a work of art! Mark
  22. Spent the day pretty much as I spent the previous four - cutting out bits of rusty Discovery and welding in new bits! So far I have put two new sills in and built up the floor supports ready for the new floor. Oh, and I also changed all four srings and shocks, and did the front discs and pads... quite a productive five days really, but bl00dy hell was it cold! Today was really nice though.... Mark
  23. I changed the front brakes on the disco this week. One side was fine, but the other side the pad had slid round the disc enough to only be in contact with one piston. There was metal to metal wear on the disc, which was deeper than I was comfortable with so I ended up changing both discs and both sets of pads! Incidentally I have yet to drive the disco further than onto the trailer and off it again! It is currently recovering from major sill surgery, and undergoing a rotten-floor-ectomy. Cheers Mark
