Land Rover smell discussion

Hi everyone.

There was a discussion not long ago that drifted onto the distinctive smell of the older Land Rovers - Series, Defenders, D1 and RRC.  I couldn't find the interview on google at the time to put into the discussion, but now that I have accidentally stumbled across it this morning, I can't find that discussion on here!

Remember that movie, it was aired on TV in holland as well, I still have it on a VHS video tape somewhere. The smell is an individual thing of every landrover; Mine smells very special by now, but it depends how deep and where the last swamp was.

Older carpeted vehicles of any brand are generally dominated by the smell emanating from damp carpets/soundproofing where they have got wet during the winter from wet/snowy footwear. It's so hard to take carpets out of a vehicle to dry them properly that few people bother, and unless you do that it always sits there mouldering away.

I'm not sure why, but it smells of corroding aluminium in most land rovers to me... Few other cars smell the same.

A mate of mine who used to be in the forces reckons my 109 "smells like a tank".

I think mine smells like a diesel locomotive; a mixture of diesel fuel and gearbox oil. I really need to get round to sorting out the gearbox before the decision is made for me!

Old cars used to smell of wood, leather, and petrol to me 😊

My Defender usually smells of hot brakes outside, and inside vaguely doggy - currently with overtones of stale beer after a can of the stuff leaked in the back and saturated the carpet.

Thank you Nick. I saved this one for my kids. I don't know if they will appreciate it as much as i do. 

 

My Betty smells like 80W90 and petrol and i love it.

Now I don't know who Anthea is. Never met the girl.... Honestly!
