Garyn666
Help!! I have a defender 1997 county model 300tdi engine. Just been told by specialist garage that I need a replacement prop shaft? Does anyone have any idea what this might cost me? Definitely not a mechanic so always have to rely on garages, just don’t want to get ripped off. Thanks
reb78
Depends on the propshaft you need but just to give you an idea - for a 300tdi 110 rear prop (you dont say 90 or 110 or front or rear prop) - https://www.lrdirect.com/FTC3905-Propshaft-Rear-110-300Tdi-V8/?keep_https=yes The Hardy Spicer, Bailey Morris or GKN options would be good although I am sure I have read somewhere that Hardy Spicer isn't what it was That's the part cost and the labour is to undo and 8 nuts, remove and replace prop and tighten up 8 nuts.... So it shouldn't break the bank... Given your location, I am curious as to the 'specialist' you are using, because there is one local to you who will make a big palaver over a simple job like this and probably charge over the odds with a britpart/non branded prop thrown in..... FridgeFreezer
As Reb says, it's a very very easy job, easily DIY'd with minimal tools - a propshaft nut tool is a good investment (~£15) plus 8x new nylock nuts (pennies) all of which would be sold by any place selling the propshafts. Apart from that, a 9/16" spanner or 14mm at a push and you're away. Chock the wheels (no rear propshaft = no handbrake!), roll yourself underneath, undo 8 nuts, drop old propshaft, stick new one in, replace nuts, grease UJ's and sliding joint (grease gun) and you're done. Unless the old one is really damaged somehow, every chance it just needs new universal joints which start at ~£15/each for half decent ones and are another fairly easy DIY job. Picture of how it all goes together is here: https://www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-rover-defender-axles-suspension/propshafts/propshaft-rear_52612
reb78
Thats a good point ^^^ the UJ's are replaceable so unless the sliding joint has gone or there is play where the caps have spun then it may be fixable (even the latter can be mended with a punch). Garyn666
The specialist is Almers in Hatfield. Glad to hear it’s not a massive job. My vehicle is. Defender 90. Thanks for the messages.
Mo Murphy
I'm sure Aylmers is the place Reb was alluding to. I wouldn't use them either after previous experience. Mo

Mo Yup, Mo knows me well. Walk away Gary and buy a 9/16" ring spanner and crawl under the truck yourself. If you need a decent garage AJD at Hoddesdon is worth a shout. An abbreviated version of a conversation with your 'specialist'.... just for a laugh... Me - I need a fan belt for a 200tdi Defender spec engine Them - What year is the vehicle? Me - It's 1989 but that isn't relevant as I have changed the engine Them - But I need the year to work out the engine and the belt you need Me - But I already told you, it's irrelevant as I have changed the engine. It's a Defender spec 200tdi Them - Is the turbo high or low? Me - It's a Defender spec engine so high turbo Them - So you need a fan belt for a Defender spec 200tdi engine....? I was a bit like when I needed some brake lines to get my dad's pick up through and MOT (at a different garage). I said you can price some up for me. They came back saying the reg points to a range rover classic. Oh yes, it's had a body swap, long story..I'll source them myself! The reg wont help! Left the factory as a 3.5V8, 2 axle 109. Then had another axle added and became a 139". Then had a 5.7l diesel fitted at some point (which is what's on the V5, which still lists it as a 2 axle) but now has a 2.8l straight 6 from a Nissan in it. And now I'm seriously contemplating a 6.5l turbo-charged V8 diesel .
paime
It's a really easy job to do yourself and you dont even need to jack up the vehicle. As Fridge mentioned above, if it's the rear prop propshaft then chock the wheels. I almost killed myself when doing mine by forgetting that no rear propshaft = no handbrake! steve200TDi
You can put into diff lock too as well as wheel chocking. This helps cracking the bolts off as you wont be trying to move the whole car! Steve
Gazzar
Photograph everything, before disassembly, especially where the two different bits of the prop shaft are pointing. There's an inner and an outer bit to the shaft, one attaches to the gearbox etc

One extra bit, since you’re new to all of this - avoid Britpart stuff. A few of their items are good, but most of it is truly awful, made of those lowest grade materials and well outside of workable tolerances, so their parts leak, wear out, snap or plain won’t fit in the first place. There is a good reason they’re so cheap, but buy cheap, buy twice, the second time being the full price for a decent quality part. Then you have to factor in the cost to your time, and doubled labour costs, and anything else that needs replacing because the Chinese made part damaged other stuff... I always recommend Dunsfold Land Rover for sourcing parts. Great service, extensive knowledge, good prices and don’t sell carp.
