110 Adventure loss of control

Recommended Posts

Part number for the "camshaft bearing" please if possible just out of interest .

As for the price , again I will say not unexpected  for any high end brand main dealer work - how do you all think the massive showrooms and tiled workshops are funded ? ?

At 24k a very unexpected failure , if it was mine I would be thinking of going after JLR for at least a shared cost of the whole escapade , the recovery to UK will have cost as well even if done through insurance.

Find a good independent and get the other 3 checked fully .

Proper Defenders are very capable and reliable , some of the later "upgrades" such as these WB packs need to be downgraded though as said earlier in this thread .

I hope you are going to keep it and have many thousands of happy adventuring

My fathers Puma 90CSW has just suffered wheel bearing / stub axle failure at 22K, ironically noticed the rumbling when performing another downgrade - replacing the already sloppy rear half shafts for some 25 year old disco ones. I put it down to poor selection of bearing spacers when new.

And on the subject of Main dealer bills - his previous td5 90CSW he bought second hand had a main dealer bill in the paperwork for £780 for replacing a rear half shaft / drive member!

Ignore the first L on all those part numbers. in no particular order ---------

FTC861 which is on there as a camshaft bearing is actually the needle roller bearing inside the stub axle to support the drive shaft https://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/ftc861-bearing-in-stub-axle-90110-1993-my-on-rrc-1986-on-and-and-discovery-1.html

606666 is the upper & lower swivel pin bearings https://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/610428/0/swivel_pin_bearing_defender___range_rover_classic___discovery_1

FTC3154 is the front stub axle

FTC3276 is the hub seal https://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/86524/0/front_axle_solid_disc_driveshaft_seal___defender_1987_2007_onwards___discovery_1_1989_1998_with_4_wheel_disc_brake

FRC2894 is the lower swivel pin. https://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/86082/0/swivel_pin_lower_defender___discovery_1___range_rover_classic

TAR100050 is upper swivel pin https://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/94203/0/swivel_pin_kit_upper_abs_defender___1987_onward

thats just some of the above list which the dealer has used uncommon descriptions for.  I just used Brit-car's website to find what part is what. I can do the rest later if you wish or you can do it.

Looking at the most expensive part, it seems that the stub axle was cheaper than retail price for a genuine LR one. Price starts at £335 according to https://www.lrworkshop.com/parts/FTC3154. (Maybe VAT accounts for the difference? Don't know about UK VAT)

Most expensive OEM version is £75.

UK VAT is 20% on top for things that qualify.

Hi All,

Final update on this one, I wrote a lengthy complaint letter to Land Rover, they picked it up and have arranged 50% (£944.00) refund from LR main dealer.

final question, on a 2015 Defender Adventure model, are the bearings sealed or should I have them greased?

Many thanks

John

Find a good local Independent LR specialist - joining a local club and asking for recommendations is a good way to start . Might be worth asking the dealer that done the repair work to verify the condition of the other three with no charge now you have JLR involvement to start things off
