Daan
What Land rover use: I have good experience with this one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184293788834?itmmeta=01HZDBQJ4AQTRQ7S58M3EGJA3E&hash=item2ae8c40ca2:g:XToAAOSwj4VdcAOd&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA4K9oORdLHQKEQYk%2Bik87PuzUPojCirElB4haC4t%2FjWMRo5gz%2B%2FY40ihc5c%2BL1tz--zyLRQ1Fz%2Fe6Az1efuDEv65CLy0n9lJkkATFBUEeiF74XktV1AZAPQOzY%2FZbDv4Dqdw1c1rX%2BvH2a9kU5K7mlmfu3BHF1VK0nXL%2Ff2FOJYPr1LiSAytDpeI0tz%2FkJf4gpfa6YHWZuHXLZxePQPIBJP7g%2FRCffmK3RHFOF4ffkgMAqYG%2F9wLY5ZdYFti5bn2uVfhWfvO2lxnvrZ9%2B%2BRSQcPJ%2BAgI6jiCgy%2FRe0GgCErYq|tkp%3ABk9SR6Si3qv7Yw It essentially is a rubbery glue that sticks the sump to the block. It is a bit hard to remove when you drop the sump again, but it forms a reliable seal. Daan

smallfry
Cork and rubber gaskets leak in the long term, also the sump flange needs to be perfect, and need to be tweaked up bit by bit, and not overtightened. RTV far better. Clean and degrease both surfaces, along with all the bolts, and it will not leak. I hate oil dripping engines. I use red HTR 430
fmmv
But don't use more Rtv than you have to, I think LR say a 2 mm bead, it squeezes out and blocks the strainer. I let it go off for a bit before tightening beyond finger tight.
Eightpot
I use Elring Dirko on sumps and anything not fuel related at work, very nice stuff
mad_pete
So how much CPU thermal paste, sorry I mean RTV is exactly the right amount ? Internet as usual seems to have varying views with the joyful rtv broke off got stuck the oil feed and wrecked the engine stories to help raise the stakes. FridgeFreezer
I generally do enough to be spread evenly across the mating face with a finger - as in, thick enough that the whole mating face is covered but no more.
Bowie69
Enough where you can't see through it when spread, and some slightly larger gobs in sharp corners/around seals. 1
mad_pete
So I took it to a garage looks like they used cork gasket and sealant and maybe overtightened a touch. Still it’s not leaking so that’s a win.

mad_pete
I’ve emailed them. I’ll see what they say.
smallfry
Thats disgusting. Sadly so typical of a professional job though. Looks like RTV on top a cork gasket. WTF ?
joe1
Re makes of rtv - choose one that goes off reasonably quickly if it's going on thick (I was filling up the T seal channels in the 300tdi rear mains) ....I used an unnamed brand from an order with Island4x4 recently.....and it took over a day to harden .....not much good if you need oil in the sump the same day !&!&!😀
mad_pete
So I sent the photos to them and they didn’t really answer but the question becomes what do I want. Should I ask for it to be re done ? Not sure what else to say.

TBH if it's not leaking I'd probably leave it as not being worth the hassle... if it does leak again I'd be strongly inclined to DIY it with some decent sealant having given it a good clean up first. Bigj66
I could be wrong. It’s been known before 🙄but I’m sure the gasket on my 4.0 Thor was a rubber one and not cork. It’s the only Landrover I’ve ever had that refuses to leak oil and yes, there is oil in it…🤷♂️ I should return it and get my money back 🤣

Escape
Only the last V8s, with the Bosch EFI and alloy sump that bolts to the bellhousing, use a rubber gasket, LVF100400. It wont fit any of the older engines. I tried to adapt it when working on my first V8 but quickly gave up and used RTV instead.
