Decent online tool shops?

Recommended Posts

Per the title really - I'm browsing around for a few bits and bobs but the usual suspects (Amazon, ebay, etc.) are terrible for tools - so much junk, so many fakes, etc.

My local Axminster closed down, the nearest Machine Mart is ~40 miles up the road, and the one local "trade" shop seems intent on charging very strong money for stuff that is no better than whatever Machine Mart are hawking.

So - any online recommendations selling decent stuff for sensible money?

William Moore and son in Preston also trade as big red power tools do a fantastic range of good stuff. I have bought good power hand stuff through workshop essentials online. What exactly are you after?

What are you after? If it’s something in particular I google the maker number.

Buy a parcel - often run deals on their eBay shop

Cromwell Tools isn't very far from you? I have often landed up there looking for things no-one seems to sell any more, like small cold chisels that don't have chocolate centres.

I've used Prime Tools a fair bit, though usually adding to the Facom collection, but their prices always seemed competitive.

Another thumbs-up for William Moore if you have or want any Milwaukee tools. I've only got a few bits, but each time they were noticeably cheaper than anyone else I could find.

I have had bargains off eBay, if you search engineering tools job lot or used engineering tools, it can be surprising what's available for cheap if you can be bothered to troll through the listings

I'm waiting on an order coming through the post, cutter arbor, 3 gear cutters and some slitting saws for the princely sum of £4 + postage total is £8.50, absolute bargain even if the cutters are blunt ( I have  tool and cutter sharpener )

Regards Stephen

Alas, they went ages ago - before Axminster :(

I'm after general engineering stuff really - decent quality hand tools and the like rather than DIY or builder's power tools (AKA Screwfix / Toolstation), very much like you used to be able to get from Cromwell or Axminster in a sort of one-stop shop rather than having to go to more specialist ones that only do one thing.

There's RDG Tools and Chronos for "hobby engineering" but their websites are bl**dy atrocious and they're mostly re-selling the same junk as ebay but for +50% markup.

I guess they can't find the spanner to adjust the website

As far as I remember, their postal service has been ok on the couple of times I used it, plus the range and quality of their tools is good.

For engineering tools have you tried MSC Industrial, there full catalogue prices aren't cheap but the monthly sales sheets often have good deals in them and mostly its well known brands and quality stuff (if you check out some of the catalogue prices you might need to sit down first!), I use them for lathe and milling tools that are a bit above the Chinese stuff which is mostly what the likes of RDG resell just relabelled by them (although some of its not bad when you consider the price and depends what you are using it for).

For lathe tools, carbide tips etc I generally use ATP who sell decent branded stuff at good prices but they are just lathe and milling tools nothing much else.

Chronos, Zoro, Cutwell

Doesn't hell you but locally we've got a firm called David Harries who stock Sealey, Beta, Bosch, Jasic, etc. Mainly a nuts, bolts and lubricant supplier but don't stock much imperial nor fine threaded stuff but they are a really good old school shop. To the point I quite often walk out with stuff I haven't had to pay for. Last week went in on the hunt for an O ring to replace the water pump one that got damaged on the JCB engine, was asked if it was all I wanted today and said yes and was then told "oh we'll sort it out next time...". Following day went in and bought £410 worth of hydraulic fluid so the pennies for the O ring pale into insignificance in cost but makes people come back.

What exactly do you want as there are many places round here that may do it but don't do online.

I'm not trying to find a specific thing, I'm just after a supplier I can bookmark that I know I can buy decent engineering tools and supplies for sensible prices - it's looking like the big industrial suppliers (MSC, Cromwell, etc) are going to be the answer.

I've bought the occasional tool from RS as well, they have a surprising number of hand tools (if you can find them).

Yes RS can be a bit pricey and its a bit of a rabbit warren but they've never sold me tat.

RS lists most of the tat under the 'RS Pro' brand to make it easier to spot.

We buy loads at work from RS tool-wise. Definitely not the cheapest for but us when suppliers have to be on the system and we get a little discount its usually easier.

Another point for tools etc is pop into your local agricultural engineers or dealers. Friend works for the local New Holland Dealership and they stock loads of good stuff, same for another couple of hire places.
