wibbly wobbly speedo

Recommended Posts

Right, got a ROW 300Tdi instrument loom here, I would like to source the male plug that fits the socket, then I could after a trial to ensure the temp gauge will work OK, fit the matching male plug to my existing wiring thus making a neater job of the instrument pack wiring instead of loads of spade & bullet connections.

anyone know where I can get the male plug & terminals from [Even a ex Td5 plug will do provided it has a few inches of wiring attached]

Help :D

Been looking at this ROW 300Tdi wiring I just got today, on the 2nd speedo plug [connector C1061] the wire postions are different to the currently fitted Td5 wiring.

looking from the face of the connector that goes into the speedo with the clip on the left nearest me , the wires are all on one side, in this order [see photo's below]

pin 1 white/orange

pin 2 not used

pin 3 green/black

pin 4 not used

pin 5 green/blue

pin 6 not used

pin 7 light green/black

pin 8 not used

pin 9 light green/blue

pin 10 not used

haven't connected it to the instruments/vehicle yet to se if the Td5 temp gauge reads correctly, it's far too late to start that now.

sure is Mo, keeping my brainbox occupied anyway

Checked the Td5 plug last night it only has these connections

pin 1 white/orange

pin 3 green/black

pin7 light green/black

so 2 more wires in the 300Tdi ROW instrument loom, so here's to finding out if it works the temp gauge correctly.

more to come eventually.

WOO HOO :D Successfully sorted.

I now have fully functional Td5 speedo/fuel & water temp gauges in my dash.

I've kept the original 1989 warning light display. [but might change to the Td5 type at a later date]

Got it sorted with the Td5 temp gauge [LR part YAD100900] & the 300Tdi Rest of World instrument loom [LR part YMG109260] & a Green temp sender [LR part AMR1425 for a 300Tdi] located within the outer of a 200Tdi sender photo below, modded like this & the plug end from a Freelander 2001 from PaulMc [Cheers Sir :i-m_so_happy: ] all fitted & test driven, temp gauge sits just below vertical same place as the old TD/200Tdi temp gauge, so guess who is a very happy boy :i-m_so_happy: I soldered all the connections between the plug & existing loom to give me reliablilty.

So there you go, it can be done using totally genuine LR parts :i-m_so_happy:

Are you sat down  even with a bit of discount from my parts supplier it was still 94quid inc vat :o

I admit I could have gone the resistor route, but this way I know the temp gauge will give me a good reading at all temps.

Effin' 'ell !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still if you're happy with the result then it's money well spent :)

I've just been putting power through the TD5 bulkhead in the garage prepping that for installation :) What's even better is that it all works :)

I spotted this on eBay this morning, too late for you Ralph, but it might be useful to someone else -

I saw that too ------ But it won't work with the 300Tdi green temp sender, only if you do as Mo did with a resistor, as I've already tried, the 300Tdi ROW harness has extra wires in the lower speedo plug that allows the green temp sender to work, a Td5 sends it's temp signal to the ecu & that tells the gauge where to put the needle so the driver gets a temp indication.

dfference in the speedo plug are listed above.

just another question on the Td5 harness that came with the instrument pack, the white/orange wire from the lower plug on back of the speedo identified as C1061 pin 1 [as we know is the low fuel light]

has a extra 'flylead' on it, it's got a factory joint on it same as some of the black wires in the loom, [i fitted the end terminal]as in the photo below, the right hand WO wire goes off to what would be the big grey multiplug to connect to the rest of the vehicles wiring.

any idea why this loom would have this extra flylead Cos I haven't [& the 300Tdi ROW loom hasn't got it either.

I can't see it on this loom that PaulMc posted a few days ago. [2nd photo]

Just a quick thanks to all those that have posted the tech in this thread.

Just got my td5 clocks working in my 110 (200tdi). Just got to make the adapter for the green temp probe and all should be well. (Ive moved a couple of pins on the back of the speedo to correspond with the light green/blue and green/blue wires on the row loom, running the light green/blue to the temp gauge and green/blue to the temp sender on the standard i get no reading (as already mention in an earlier post) but if i short to earth it goes to full. fingers crossed that with the new sender it works)

Will let you know.

Nice one Edd :) Are you using a posh harness or a resister for your temp gauge ? It's interesting to see what other people do as we all approach these things in different ways and sometimes we do the same thing yet get different results :o

Im using the original td5 loom but modified to route the temp signal through the speedo like the 300tdi row loom. will know in the next couple of days if its good but its looking good so far.

I have just finished fitting my pod and all is well. The info given here is excellent, however, there is no battery inside the head electronics, but there is a super capacitor that provides a similar function. For those interested the mileage is held as a HEX number in a serial EEPROM. These are easy enough to erase if you have the ‘know how’, but more difficult to re-program without a specialist programmer. Most ‘speedo houses’ will use a clip on emulator.

Points worthy of note are the shameful facts that the RAVE 1999 / 00 model year instrument diagram is completely wrong (even to the point that LR have altered the laws of physics !). However, the RAVE 2002 diagram is much better, bit still wrong with regard to some of the warning lights. All mine are connected including a couple of extra functions………..fans on low speed are connected to the ‘water in fuel’ light and fans on high speed are connected to the centre LED in the speedo head. For those with the hazard warning switch on the lower dash, it is quite easy to take a feed to the hazard warning light on the TD5 pod.

I really like the way the newer fuel gauge works, although it is designed for the larger rear tank and the low fuel light comes on when there is about 5 – 7 L remaining in the tank.

I am not using the Temperature gauge or the clock ………. These on mine are replaced by ‘real’ gauges ……….. Autometer ultra lite metric water Temp and oil pressure.

The RS numbers quoted by DJ for the plugs are almost correct (DJ quoted one as a ‘cap’ plug part number)

362 8796 for the 20 way plug

362 8780 for the 16 way plug

362 8869 for the pins
