integerspin
Mandrel benders don't necessarily have to be huge, I have pictures of a manual operated one set out on a light wooden table, it was on the Harrier production line at Dunsfold, I took the pics at the auction when they shut down. After calling Hilmor about bending aluminium 2" 14swg I altered a press bender, so it was a rotary compression bender, amazingly enough it did work.. Ask simon to try some exhaust in the rotary draw bender he has, pics in another post[ I was going to ask], they bend 1-5/8 14 swg steel tube with them.. I seem to remember the lad at specialised exhaust telling me a mandrel wasn't necessary unless the radius was <2D. Think of a rotary compression bender bending copper tube, it uses a die aswell as a former; conduit benders don't use the die and they just crush copper pipe. don't know how old this is: Specialised Exhaust Systems 2a Connaught Works 22 Willow Lane Mitcham Surrey CR4 4NA Tel: 020-8648-4786 Business Type: Tube Fittings & Stockists I also found this. http://www.ukdata.com/numbers/02563794.html Does that mean they are still going? If steel is OK take a look in an exhaust catalog, they will list bends.
Paul Wightman
Nige, I made one from assorted 16swg stainless steel bends, reducers and tubes for a Chrysler 3.7 slant six (Dodge). Piece of wee wee! There was no need for balanced or tuned tubes as the engine was in no way race spec. The Chrysler manifold was prone to not sealing on the head as it was designed to 'slide'. They were also notorious for cracking.

will_warne
Nige, there was a club member who used to to do exhaust fab work but, as he was a on man band, I guess he used off the shelf bends. Have you asked Andy who did the system on Moglite? No idea if they were any good but that's localish. How did you get on with EBD?
disco tony
Many many moons ago, I worked in the aero engine industry. Tube manipulation was our dept. specialty, most things were machine bent but some one offs and/or protoypes were bent using something called serabend (iirc). Try a web search, not sure of spelling. It was a metalic substance with a very low melting point, (boiling water). Fill bend area with serabend, fuse in boiling water, (perhaps blowtorch?), bend, re-heat to extract serabend. May be talking out the back of my posterior but it's well worth a look? Just googled it myself http://www.lameriada.info/rec-autos-tech/r...bender-3il.html

Hybrid_From_Hell
Hmmmm OK Moving on I don't wnat to make it from bits and Bobs - too messy and this exhaust is quite complex I have all the dimensions and things from Mr Eales - when I say these to some of the 2We can build anythings" you can hear the er and ums and shuffling of feet Shortly afterwards they say "No, not really able to do that etc" SO, Having had a chat to Paul W (the answer was NO ! ) he did have an exellent idea.... Yes I need a pro to make it Yes there are around somewhere BUT Prob not best on a 4x4 Forum - prob better asking on a race type forum where this is common place - so Anyone recomend racey type high performance track racing type forums ? Ian (BBC) has suggested "Piston Heads" and have registered and asked... Any other Forums thatmay help identify a cracking exhaust maker ? pugwash
nige can i recommend you back to my previous post- the chap referenced really knows his beans and makes some lovely kit. you could ask on the www.cobraclub.com as some of those guys have had lots of lovely work done. If you want a really really really good job done then phone Andy Burroughs at Gardner Douglas sport cars (www.gdcars.co.uk) and ask where he has his underslung exhausts for Cobras made- they are works of art and sound lovellly
pugwash
actually scrap that i know the people that make exhausts for GD: www.jpexhausts.co.uk some of their manifold are works of art. having spent some time discussing my exhausts requirements with pro-speed (do you know how hard it is to find an exhaust manufacturer that will make quick replacement CATS?) i would strongly recommend you have a chat with them- they really are very helpful and only 2 hours from you i'd have thought. Your going to have to travel to get something good i would have thought!

PeterR
Hi Nige Hatward & Scott made a nice custom 3" exhaust for my Impreza (muchly modified). Very reasonable but I don't know how the costs for you would stack up as I managed to tag onto a group buy. http://www.haywardandscott.com/index.asp
