i am going to give my motor a proper rebuild over the winter and am considering what to do while the body is off.Anyhoo i currently pay around £200 per year on a modified policy with Peter Best insurance but asked them about fitting a V8 and the annual quote doubled  .So who are you guys insured with and what are they like?

Ideally i need insurance to cover me for probably less than 200 road miles per year as the rest are on the trailer or off road, but cover me for theft/3rd party including mods all year round

Sick of talking to numpties that are reading off a list and have no idea what a winch challenge car is

Paul ;)

P.s anybody deal with these?

A mate has his comp safari car insured with http://www.competition-car-insurance.co.uk, no probs with any mods and cheap with only 1000 road miles.

I use Adrian Flux for modified motors, always seem open to any mods, although some mods rule out some of the underwritters they use they can usually find someone to provide cover.

I'm with Sureterm. I listed the mods over the phone - 1984 2.5NAD Ninety with a 300Tdi, auto box, cage etc and they read them back to me with a quote of £280 for me (27, 1 accident in 5yrs) plus g/f on 5000 miles a year.

The printed paperwork came through with "Modifications: None" so I rang up. They said "just sign it, we don't use that bit, list your mods on the other bit of paper" but I protested, listed all my mods on both sheets and signed everything.

The whole shebang bounced back again because, although I'd listed different springs and shocks, I hadn't said 2" lift which I'd mentioned over the phone. Apart from this messing about though, seems ok so far and the price was good...

I'm with KGM through a broker called Academy Insurance Services. Pay just over £250 for a year fully comp with loads of mods. That is for both of my 90s, so £500 per year at the moment, but one is off soon.

No limit to modifications and up to 500 miles per year. They were also good when I had my Range Rover...

I too used Competition car insurance and now Richard Egger.

The former were still a cheaper quote but wouldn't insure me any longer (details not for public consumption).

Richard Egger's only stipulation was another security device and proof that i competed, membership of the AWDC was enough for them on that matter ;)

We use sureterm also and have for the past 4 years . Not really had any bother with them.

Every year I ring the usual suspects for a quote and sureterm always seem to come up the best price

they dont blink at mods and even know what they are and for.

we pay £280 per year fully comp for the modded 200 tdi limeted to 1200 miles

<snip> adrian flux <snip> easy to deal with and understand what you tell them

Is it just me that ends up dealing with the office numpty, then?? I seem to spend hours on the phone to them every time I'm due for renewal and they never show the slightest knowledge of what I'm talking about! They certainly don't want my business going by the quotes they give me! (No, hair colour isn't a tick-box!!!)

I've also had a bad experience with them in the past. They are allegedly a Land Rover Specialist, but don't quite understand that you want your pride and joy (shiny one) repaired by a Land Rover Approved bodyshop when it's only 3 years and less than 18,000 miles old........Won't be using or recommending them again!!

NFU Mutual. Really knowledgeable, winch and bumper automatically covered, 2" lift and oversize tyres accounted for. £400 per year for fully comp, full business use with 3 named drivers.

Unfortunately NFU said they wouldnt insure my car cos it had a roll cage  also i heard they dont give salvage retention :o

Paul

It must be down to the Agents with NFU. When I skidded on some deisel in my 90 and ended upside down in a ditch, they offered me £3000 + the car back in settlement. Needless to say I took them up on the offer as the 90 was a 1986 2.5Td.

That almost sounds criminal with them doubling the price of the quote all for the sake of a V8...besides, we like power in our off road toys. What do they expect? Car insurance bullies it sounds like...:(

  • 2 weeks later...

I had a lightweight with coil over chassis, 3.5 V8, roll cage and tilt. Thought it would be a nightmare to insure based on previous experience insuring modified cars (best one was an escort that I put bigger brakes on and my insurer told me I would have a week to find a new insurer as they don't cover modded cars, however they cancelled the policy there and then so I drove around for a week with no insurance while I tried to get new cover. Ended up doubling my premium because I made the car STOP better!).

Anywhoo I called Firebond, after a 5 minute call I had full comp insurance with agreed value and 3000 miles for £120. Guys really knew what they were talking about, would definitely recommend them.

Would also recommend getting cover for while the vehicle is off the road during a rebuild as it was stolen from my garage while I was part way through the rebuild while I was off on honeymoon!

frank pickles insurance brokers from otley, 01943 850999, ask for Andrew.

im 22 and because of that, no big insurance companies would insure me on my Q plated ibex. i had a quote from adrian flux for 900 and off pounds. Franck pickles searched around and got it down to 430 which imo is acceptable considering my age.

these so called specialist for landrovers and modified 4x4s seem a complete waste of time and total joke imo, they all prech we understand landrovers but when you get one on the phone theyre a bunch of tards controlled by a computer screen.
