Series 3

Mr Bean

Recommended Posts

Bought for the sum of £900 with a years mot.

The engine blew up on the way home and ended up being towed back by the wifes Freelander!!! :o

Then the front tyre died and i found out that it had no jack or wheel brace and the spare was no good!

The Mrs and the kids were up till 3am because of me...Let's just say they are NOT happy.

I think some pics are in order.

Well the engine appears to have a hole in the side of the block

I think that makes it Terminal!

The engine will have to come out for a proper inspection but it looks like replacement is going to be the only option.
It would probably be a much better vehicle if you replaced the engine with a 200tdi, but I have a real soft spot for the two-and-a-quarter petrol engine so I hope that you can rebuild it. They are slow, but when running nicely you can hardly hear them at tickover, just sort of a rustling ball-bearings-in-oil sort of a sound. Lovely :) It's a bit of a dream of mine to get an early SIII or a late IIA one day.

I know it's been a bit of a disaster so far, and you have every right to be P'd-off (although you don't sound like you are :) ), but she does look good for her age, so I hope that you can rebuild the old girl - she deserves a bit of TLC...

Looking through the small of history i got with it was a receipt for a bottom end rebuild and it did say on the report that there was heavy wear. I'm not going to waste any time on that engine as it's scrap.

TBH i wasn't p'd off so much but disappointed because i thought i got a right bargain.

Quite a tidy early s3, is it tax exempt?

Afraid not, although it is an "A" suffix and it was first registered in Feb 1973 so it requires road tax.

200Tdis are all well and good, but the 2.25 petrol is very underrated I find. There should be plenty around so easiest option is probably just to swap the engine.
I hope you keep the old girl standard and not ruin it by putting a tdi in it.

You guys have read my mind, i will be on the look out shortly for a 5 bearing 2.25 petrol engine and i will probably go a LPG kit in the near future.

But before the LPG i will need to buy some new wheels and tyres as these Disco rims are not even fitted with longer studs....the thread doesn't even make it to the end of the nut !!!

WELL, it's not registered date that matters, it's build date, and being February 1973 is is perilously close to Dec 31st 1972, have you checked the existing disc? If nil rated than excellent, if not, it might be worth finding out the build date of it, could save you £200 a year :)

Regarding the wheel nuts i was going to change the wheels simply because i don't like the look of them. Its good to know it was at least safe to drive the way it was.

How do i find out the build date of the Landy? The chassis number is 90105474A.

I think the "901" refers to the first year of manufacture i belive and the "05474" is the build number as it came of the production line and the "A" is the model revision.

Or am i wrong?

My concern with the wheel nuts was that the studs were not long enough to allow the nuts travel for the full length of their thread. It would seem that is not the case and it is acceptable.

But as i need full set of 5 tyres i will pick up some new rims at the same time.

I believe that's allways the case when Disco I wheels are used. But no problem with that.
