amazing model, ive love to have the skills/dedication to do something like that. does the engine run? now THAT would be amazing :D

Amazing. I saw a programme on the telly a few years ago about model makers. There was one woman who made a working scale model of a machine, got it running and filmed it, then took it to bits and painted up all the moving parts so it would never run again. Really weird.

Wow thats pretty cool and detailsed.

Being a youngen (35) i love the spitfire but not seen that many fly. Apart from a couple of years ago when they had the 50th D Day show. The Landcaster and two spitfires took off from Eastleigh airport (southampton airport to everyone outside Hampshire)

The spit fires then fly over Eastleigh serveral times. The whole town came to a stop as everyone just looked into the air. I have heard some nice car sounding engines but they have nothing on the sound of a sopitfire.

Speaking of spit fires and lancaster. My grandparents were in the ATA during the war . (they are the ones that fly new planes from the makers to the airfields, before they have any nav stuff on them , so they would foly by a road map and follow the roads to a airfield.)

When i was the 40th D Day celebrations me and Jules we watching it with my Grandma and she said that the lancaster was a lump of sh*t to fly and built like it too whern they were new. She always said she would be bu**ered if she would get in a 40 year old one as they were bad enough new . Always made me laugh , as she used to fly up to when she was into her 70's . As kids she would take us up in a cesna but always getting trouble for flying upside down and doing barral rolls across tha airfield. She also used to do the fly staight up in the air thing and then stall and free fall down to earth and start it again. Great fun when she took us out (al the grand children, one at a time ). But that sort of thing is when you are 10-11 years old . But she took my uncle out and scared the carp out of him and had him being sick after a couple of mins (after all my uncle is a practicle joker and it was her getting back at him :)

And a 1/5 scale Merlin should still produce 200hp at least :)

since they were over 1000 even on the early ones

30 or 40 years ago I heard about a 2/3 scale spit replica kit plane that could fly and carry a person that was reckoned to be powered by a modified Ford V8.. This may have been an urban myth but as a youth I would lie awake at night dreaming of owning one. My 'lottery-dream' is still a Spitfire and always will be...

There's a couple of companies around the world that will supply ready made or kits to build a 2/3 scale spit. THey are usually powered by a V6 or similar. Serching on google brings them all up.

There have been rumours in the warbird world for a while that an ozzie company is working on a full scale model powered by a 6.0 V12 supercharged old jag engine which i reckon could be interesting- won't have quite the same sound as a merlin but perhaps won't be far off. However no-one has every come forward ans said that they are the ones working on it so it could all just be a fanciful rumour.

I heard on the news this morning that they have decided to ignore it and will be going ahead with trials anyway.

All I heard on the radio was that this petition looks set to crack a million today... Maybe they'll listen to THAT!

That is an exquisite piece of work, makes the Airfix kits I used to make up as a kid look a bit basic. :D

There exists in the US a thing called a Thunder Mustang(sic) ,we have one example in NZ, which is about 2/3-3/4 scale, it is powered by a V12 engine originally developed for off shore power boats, about 600 hp & in the air looks & sounds as close to a full size P-51 as makes no difference with performance to match if not better. A Spitfire built on these lines would be simply fabulous I reckon.

Just escorted a Fire Engine down some country lanes, I found them just after they had got stuck coming up a hill. They aked me to follow them should they run into any more problems.

Strange isn't it ????

everybody loves 4x4's and their drivers when they are stuck and need a tug - but treat them like planet killing, devil worshippers when they don't. :angry: :angry:

That model is amazing! the cockpit looks so real, and full size!!

I spent some time at an airfield in Florida, (Kissimie Gateway for anyone interested) and they had a 2 seat spitfire trainer, being americans, $1000 got you 15 minutes ($5000 if you were English). they also had a P51 Mustang, $2000 for 15 minutes, and 2 harvards. once a week, they'd fire up the spitfire to take off, and all the students would stand behind the aircraft, just to be in the exhaust and propwash. AMAZING sound. I can't remember the name of the place, but, if you have a fortune to spend, and the next time I go there, I fully intend to! I'm sure it would be like nothing else on earth!

IIRC they built them for the Royal Air force, but was under the impression that they were fitted with 2.8 litre Rolls Royce B40 engines same as were fitted to Austin Champs of the period.

I believe that you may be confusing two odd-ball Land Rovers here. I think that the B40 engine was only ever fitted to a handful of 81" series 1s for a military trial, wheareas you are right to say that the 2wd series 1 was built as a production vehicle for the Royal Air Force and Navy for towing around airfields etc.

I was under the impression that these 2wd's were fitted with the standard 2 litre petrol engine, but I am happy to be proved wrong. I have a 1958 (ex-RN) one that was converted into 4wd with an early front axle and transfer box.

I was given to understand the Belgian Army ordered a load of 2WD landies.

When I was looking for my first Landy the dealer tried to sell a 2WD vehicle to me, but I wasn't that naive even in those days. Looking back it might actually be worth a bit as a curio and could be fun convincing Ken Livingstone that it's not a 4x4
