Fatboy
I for an advisory on the MOT for my Range Rover brakes last week as they were out of balance. Fair enough, I knew the pads were worn so thought I'd to the chance to fit new pads, change the fluid, check the calipers and free off the slides.. I stripped the front and sure enough, slides were a bit stiff so gave them a clean etc then noticed the new pads were wrong. As I was in town yesterday I thought I may as well get pads from the local Dealer. I never thought to ask the price and would not have minded paying a couple of quid extra for the convenience etc but imagine my surprise when the bloke asked for £114.50 !!!! just for the rears (all they had). The other couple of blokes in the Parts Dept turned away and started looking to the roof, casually whistling to themselves ad I asked the chap to check... price was correct apparently. We don't have any decent independent shops in the area so I tootled off to a pals garage in Stonehaven where he had them in stock and sold them to me for less than £30... Job all done, inc new sensors and the brakes are back to tip top!
Exmoor Beast
Its about time someone did something about LR taking the pi55 over parts. Can't remember the exact figures now but they tried to charge me nearly £400 for a series three water pump near 20years ago! They were £20 at Paddocks at the time. mmgemini
Will. Until people relise that a lot the parts you buy from Land Rover are produced by other manufacturers then people will buy them. I have many times been told on forums that I shouldn't be recumending or buying "patterned" brake parts, only Land Rover Genuine. I have not had those people understand that Land Rover only assemble parts from other manufacturers to make a Land Rover.
ejparrott
I concur, we build winches for a maritime division of a large international company. Spares are ordered by the end user from said company, who then orders them from us, doubles the price, and sells them on. They also buy a vairable speed drive from another company, then put a new face moulding on with their own logo, and sell it as their own under license, but the end user has no idea..... UdderlyOffroad
Ahh the Bolton war-cry! :-D Lockheed is usually the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) for LR Brake components. Answer is of course to find a good local indie parts distributor who isn’t just a blue-box shifter, as well as online merchants who give you a choice of OEM, ‘Genuine’ or aftermarket…(lrdirect.com is my current favourite, but lrseries amongst others). Can’t help with your local supplier though - maybe Maverik can help?
reb78
It might be a good idea to put a seperate thread together with the makers of OEM parts?? Timken for bearings Corteco for seals Lockheed for brakes etc..... Then folk would know which makes to ask for and still get the same as LR genuine, just cheaper. FridgeFreezer
Try buying brakes for a normal car, LR genuine prices are mostly insanely low for most things.
CwazyWabbit
Urgh! He said normal car ... urgh. Joking aside I do agree, it's only a few years now since I got rid of the people carrier and Land Rover genuine prices are quite reasonable in comparison to genuine parts for that. CwazyWabbit
But still, why pay genuine prices when it is a lot cheaper if you can find the OEM version? I do agree, but I was just saying that Land Rover are by no means the worst offender when it comes to pricing of genuine parts. I will try to find an OEM version if I can as I have yet to develop the ability to pass bars of gold As an aside the people carrier was a Seat Alhambra which some may know was also available as a Ford Galaxy or a VW Sharran as it was a joint enterprise thing between the 3 of them. A large number of the parts were used on all 3 cars and could be bought through any of the companies with quite substantial differences in price. I wonder if any Land Rover parts are also used on different manufacturers vehicles? That may also be a cheaper route to parts, especially if searching for second hand parts. FridgeFreezer
Lots of earlier stuff shares the parts bin with Rover/BL/Jag/Mini/Austin/LDV etc., especially 70's & 80's. Sure a lot of "pattern" stuff is just as good or made by the same people... but some of it it utter guff sold by Britpart etc., and as has been proved more than once, OE stuff that fits may not be made to the same spec. Fatboy
Indeed! I think I've got a fairly good handle on local retailers... I just don't see how LR can justify that kind of mark up. Northeast4by4 in Stonehaven are very good to deal with and his advise / help is excellent, he is always happy to order stuff in for me to pick up. We could really do with a good Specialist Land Rover Parts Shop. I guess I was spoilt by having JSF in Norwich for 10 years when I lived in Norfolk... UdderlyOffroad
You think £114 for a pair of pads is bad.... http://www.lrdirect.com/FRC8530-Washer/?sfi=frc8530 £9.18 for a washer!!

Nigelw
????????? OMG How things have changed!!!!! I used to love Lindacre Landrover in Ipswich, tech guys in parts were amazing, knew everything from part No's to YOM's and loads of tricks to use on axles, brakes and the like. Wanna have a hart attack, L/R quoted 1500 euro for a recon MAF for my 98 vintage 3.9 Disco and really won't tell you how ridiculous the price for the cam and followers were, well ok 1900 euro(euro because I am in Belgium). I think it can only get worse!!!
disco_al
you think LR prices are bad.....(don't flame me for this - but just a comparison)....Mazda 6 front pads £162 + VAT, Mazda 3 parcel shelf (yes, the bit of fabric covered plastic in the boot) £350 + vat......stuff for "normal" cars is ridiculous, more so than LR genuine stuff. ejparrott
£9.18 for a washer!! £0.27 for a washer ? must be a big bloody washer!
nicks90
what really surprised me is the parts prices for mercedes! Believe it or not, they are very very reasonable. Alot of parts are shared between the merc ml and grand cherokee (same engine + box) and we recently had to service the auto and change a couple of sensors and the merc prices were half the jeep price. Speed sensor from merc was only £30+vat and the filter was a fiver
