Hybrid_From_Hell
NIIIIIIIGE! You are impossible!!! :o Ah well, that's a demo on how to do it the old fashioned way Cheers I try Many peeps have asked me about crimping kit, the "Proper Jobs" are a fortune, but these are seriously clever, bench mounted in a vice means 2 x hands free for fitting. been looking at all sorts and tried a few (all ***p) but these babys tick all the boxes The process is as you have outlinned but probably a load quicker , and it does the proper Crimps on the terminals where it "Folds" the ears into the cable Thought you'd like to know Nige
dirtyninety
This is the best thread on LR4x4 for a long time. Really enjoying it. Nige, will these crimping tools be listed on your website?

That's ideal for future users anyway! ANYWAY, NEWS JUST IN! Looks like somebody at ACT forgot to post my gasket BUT it went out courier Friday when I rang so it will arrive today, HAPPY DAYS! Engine back together tonight, work on ECU box, WILL IT RUN TONIGHT?!?! Cheers!
Mr Noisy
This is the best thread on LR4x4 for a long time. Really enjoying it. Nige, will these crimping tools be listed on your website? Thankyou kind sir, it is a fair bit of effort to write this thre.... NAA, who am I trying to kid?! I love a good thread, you can't beat pic heavy threads with lots of info, it should really help others in future which is just as important as helping me do my build now, although I'm learning the hard way for some things! Very glad you're enjoying it! I reckon the crimp tool should be a recommended option in the HT kit cos it is well worth the money after 3 hours crimping with pliers yesterday! Cheers all! Cynic-al
Running tonight, your fast I threaded mine to take a push fit fitting, can't remember if i did 1/8" or 1/4" now, but a different way of doing the same thing Feel like I need to paint the engine now
Mr Noisy
Running tonight, your fast I threaded mine to take a push fit fitting, can't remember if i did 1/8" or 1/4" now, but a different way of doing the same thing Feel like I need to paint the engine now Well yeah but when I say running I mean "start it up to check it works but its not done yet because I will need to remove the loom to tape it, i am waiting for my Wideband, need to be able to afford a heater box and then have to tackle an equal amount of wiring for the dashboard switches! Oh and all this is assuming I have wired it up right and get the ECU box sorted tonight! Also yeah it just do happens to be a tight 8mm so I thought I might aswell use the same method! Painting the engine is optional but I can thoroughly recommend it, makes lifting the bonnet 10x more pleasurable
Hybrid_From_Hell
You don't need any sort of lambda to run it, just to tune it, many racers have the hole bunged up and the lambda plug removed and sealed up ! Nige
Mr Noisy
Hi Nige Yeah I'm planning to tube it up with the Wideband and then might sell it again, not sure if I should run it with the NB sensor, would appreciate extra economy when cruising if possible! Mr Noisy
Evening all! I'm afraid she didn't run tonight But not that it wouldn't of course, I'm just not ready yet! Tonight, Replaced the plenum after receiving my thermal gasket today: BUT, this revealed an issue! The pwm valve simply does not fit under a Discovery bulkhead with the provided pipe work, so we had to adjust the chobs! Plenum came off again, and whilst it was off I got a pic of the throttle body heat delete. Simply route the pipe from the radiator direct to the inlet mani, dodging the TB and keeping them charge temps nice and cool, as similar as possible to what the MAT is reading ideally! I figured the only way was to spin the pwm by 90 degrees and slot it in the space above the inlet mani, inboard of the rocker cover... The pipe on the left is the original idle valve chob. He was just the job but had to be cut down. This guy was small, he was hard and my god he was a motherf*ucker!! I lost blood getting that pipe on there and it took the best part of an hour. Put a clip on it to make sure the bloody thing doesn't come off again!!!!! Results however are most pleasant So, then I notice a notification in another thread I'm watching about a pwm valve mod that is required on the relay board. Basically the relay near the D37 plug must be removed and a jumper wire fitted to allow correct operation. Basically the pwm needs varying voltage which the ECU supplies directly, whereas the relay only provides on/off so this jumper wire connects the inny contact (connected to ECU) to the outy contact (connected to pwm) Then I got on with fitting my coil pack retainer. Bit of a bugger to get the coil pack in the right place but got there after about ten minutes fiddle/adjust/wiggle/try/try again. Had to file a small portion of the bracket out though because it fouled on the edge of the plenum! In the end it was Sam 1, Bracket Nil Then I proceeded to screw down the ECU and relay board into the waterproof box, and p clipped the link lead to the side of the casing to keep it under control. Fitted three glands too, far right MAP, middle power supply cables and SAW/PIP, far left rest of loom. Also something comedy that I noticed, a great selling point for your website Nige, fitting Megasquirt POLISHES YOUR PAINTWORK!!! Here's the general condition of my paint: And here's the wing tops! Lol, cheers!
zardos
With your new PWM value location how are you going to secure it? I was thinking you would use one/two of the bolts that hold the stepper motor housing and make a bracket.
Bowie69
The hoses are very stiff, and would hold it in place no problem, it has done on mine for ages now
Mr Noisy
As Bowie says, it doesn't need securing, not going anywhere! It's a bigger that o struggled for the best part of an hour to fit the pwm bracket and now have to remove it!!
Mr Noisy
However looking at the pics again, a simple strip of metal with a twist in it and a hole in the end for the nearest stepper bolt would be ideal, then jubilee round the pwm. Will have a look at it for completeness!
need4speed
Im really enjoying this thread Sam. Well done on a cracking job so far! When i get round to doing mine im probably going to end up reffering to this thread as much as Nige's! As has been said before, a picture tells a thousand words so keep em coming - especially the wiring ones lol
Mr Noisy
Thanks N4S, glad you're finding it useful mate! Good thing is with this thread I suppose that it basically details fitting a Nige kit by someone who has never seen MS before, as opposed to nige's thread many moons ago that was more of a rolling experiment!! But yes of course the thread will continue, right up to the point where the last tool is downed and the last keyboard key is pressed. And then there will be more videos, planning to submerge the engine on a slipway ideally. Would make great YouTube to have a v8, running, completely underwater. Wise move? Probably not! Anyway, just ordered off eBay: Basically going to cut the plug off my serial cable, run the wire through one of the glands and then solder this on and attach to ECU. Means I can keep it plugged into the laptop all the time and still keep the box closed/waterproof
Hybrid_From_Hell
I am finding this thread really useful. Its also good to see someone that takes proper care fitting and not just "that will do" Stylee When this thread has finished Stage 1 (running) then I would like A post at the end (or maybe at the beginning ? ) with : How long from Box plopping on floor opened and work starting How long from start to key turn and runs ? How long for say Fitting Hardware - Trigger wheel, brackets VR sensor etc (Forget PWM as thats an odd ball I need to look into !) How long to do all the wiring, and in prob 2 stages - ie Make / remove tape up How long "Thinking" time for where to put ECU / EDIS etc Forget engine top end off as that a odd ball again and similar jobs, Leads (we know !) and other things This way a member considering an install gets an idea of how long in total, and how long per "Module" I can defo make some tweaks and improvments to the kits, one thing I was already working on was a change to instructions with maybe more detauil, the fact you mounted the Coil Bracket wrong is MY fault not yours, so things like this thread and feedback are superb. Keep at it your not far off a key turning moment soon Nige
Hybrid_From_Hell
Hmmmm And just had a thought (Yes Thanks all) This would be a great thread to "Copy" when finished into a new post, and then me edit (with Sams approval) into a 100% Tech Thread with nothing other than prob Sams input as a Modern A-Z Fitting guide, maybe with a Link to the "Full Thread" as well, and then the new Tech Thread added to the Megasquirt Index as a Key item in its own right ? Thoughts ? Nige
