What did you do with your old steering box??

As above, i was just wondering what folks do with their old junk like steering boxes? Weigh them in?

My real query is, is there anywhere that would take them for a few beer tokens to be reconditioned and sold on, or are they just scrap? I just think it is a shame to throw these bits away if there is a specialist out there that can give them another life.

I weighed it in. I rang NPS and they were only offering a couple of quid, collected. Couldn't be arsed with the hassle, so weighed it in.

Though there were some (a rarer disco box or something iirc) that they were paying better money for.

I may just give them a try. I like recylcing these parts, so i hate throwing stuff away, but the garage is full of useless metal now!

Good idea. I might do that. There was play in the box which is why i replaced it. It wasnt really leaking at all. If scrap it, i will certainly take it apart to see how it works first. I wonder if the internals are available for these boxes still? I suppose they must be as you can get reconditioned ones.

Dirtyninety I would have one off you subject to where you are or getting it to me I'm after a four bolt preferably with a disco arm I need to replace the one on 45.

If you chaps are serious, I'm sure there are two "good ones", let me get them out the shed and check. If you organised collection, you could have one for a forum donation :) hows that?

I have not long rebuilt a steering box, did a pretty thorough job, took it compltely apart and replaced the needl eroller bearings on the main shaft.

Now, a mate and I did the reassembly and I would provide some pointers....

1) getting the preload settings for the sector shaft appears tricky, the top adjuster and pre-loader interact making it difficult to know if you are getting it right, the method of measuring is tricky and I didn't own a torque wrench that goes low enough.

2) a lot of the kits don't seem to provide the 3 nylon piston seals in their kits.

Now depressingly when I put the box back on it leaked terribly from the top cover and the lower seal. Like far worse than it was before I started, and at that point one of the needle roller sets had disintegrated.

I haven't done a re-strip to try and see what we got wrong, but I'd suggest that if you are rebuilding then the top cover could bear with using PTFE tape in addition to the rubber seal. I have 2 boxes that leak tragically from the top cover now and I reckon corrosion seaps in and that the top seal is a bit of an issue. This makes the whole box appear wet, which fit in with what I have seen a few times.

The lower seal I have no idea on until I look, my shaft had suffered and I though my seal was going to avoid it, but maybe it didn't and it's just sat on the damaged area. In which case probably a refacing of that area in some way would solve it.

You will almost certainly need a hydraulic puller to get the arm off, nothing I tried moved it, it broke a bunch of pullers in the process.

Cool now all I have to do is find a way of getting it from you to me in Southampton. Any volunteers for a forum relay.

Just out of interest, at a main dealer, they had a puller for drop arms they had machined themselves (or at least had someone machine) as even the LR special puller was not that reliable.

I'd broken several, including a genuine LR one trying to remove the arm.

This struggled - but succeeded!

I don't have accurate dimensions - it was just a sketch to aid my memory.

A regular Hydraulic Puller thing screwed into the bottom. You slip the tube over the drop arm and wind up the hydraulic thingy.

The outer tube had been hardened to stop wear around the groove which grips the shoulders of the drop arm.

They also had a collar which could slide over the tube to meet the bottom of the drop arm (to further assist stopping the jaws from spreading) - but they didn't need it on mine.

Anyway, it worked unbelievably well. They said it had never failed!
