Terrafirma shocks Pro sport ?????

Recommended Posts

Hi there just been out to my Defender this eveing to messure for a bike rack and oh no looked under it and shock oil YET again so blasted off a Email to terafirma (below) has any one else had problems like this ????????

Hi there I have a question about your Pro sport shocks. I have the Pro sport +2" shocks (with the solid Blue guard rather than the concertina gaiter) I Purchased the whole Medium kit from M&M 4x4 on the 22/10/2010 BUT not fitted till 15th Feb 2011 by D&C Roberts when they fitted a new galvanized chassis (millage 195137) The drivers side rear shock failed with in three months after some negotiating with M&M they replaced the shock under the guarantee without me having to wait for ever while it was returned to you for assessment. I then had a rear shock fail again just out of warranty so had to purchase another one from JSF 4x4 on the 31/07/2012 I have been out to night 6/10/2013 and guess what Shock oil all over the drive ...So that's THREE rear shocks that have failed in under THREE years (32 months to be precise) I have a 110 I have spent a fortune doing up it new galvo chassis, springs, shocks Polly bush kit etc etc ....has a Hanabble roof rack that never carries anything and a spare wheel on a swing away carrier on the back door. I carry nothing in the back of my land rover and on 99.9% of all journeys I am the only person in it. I do NOT off road at all (having spent a fortune on all new doors, bonnet etc complete re spray) Since the first fitting in 2010 till today my land rover has dun 10,384 Miles divided by THREE rear shocks averages a new rear shock every 3461 miles or a new one every 10 months ..........Just to add to that of that 10,384 miles 6070 of that have been this year since January meaning the first two failed with in 4314 miles What is going on ??? is there a problem with this product ???

Not so happy to read this as I just bought a full set of Pro Sport shocks for my Disco :o

Needs must as they are all about shot and need replaced for the safety test, just means I have to factor in the upgrade to high end Koni's sooner rather than later

Although I must admit I have not heard anything bad about them other than this post, and have heard more horror stories from OME shocks failing!

Keep us posted on what you get back from them on the warranty front.

The warrenty is for just ONE year so the first one that went was coverd but not the other two .... I guess I'm in the lucky position as my Local landy parts place does the back Pro sport 2"+ shock for £43 including VAT so I've no postage on that BUT to add to the above My mate usess them on two Landys One disco one defender 90 and him and his son seriousley off road and do the off road courses / days etc and never had a problem. He recons I've just been very very unlucky........as for the email I sent to Terrafirma NO REPLY

Are not so good fitted the new one today and she handles great again now But it dont sound good on the long term front........trouble is my whole chassis colour sceame is blue the same blue as the shocks cover ....blue coated stainless brake pipes, blue cross member, blue anti roll bar, blue stearing rods ....I surpose I could spray some others but how long that would last no idea

When your driving along the road, or thru fields, or in the mud, can you see the color of the dampers?

I'd rather i had some shocks that did their job when i was using the vehicle, than ones that looked pretty when it was parked up!

I tottaly agree with you it has to do its job first and look pretty second. BUT when I've spent a lot of time and one hell of a lot of effort matching it all up inside and out it is a bit of a ******** if I then have to then put bright yellow ones on it....I love it to bits as we all do our Landy's. I'm banned from talking about it round my mates and so obsessed with it Im the kind of mad nut that polishes the under side of my bonnet (No joke) and I polish my axle cases, cross member etc.....My chequer plate floor pannels you can see your face in LOL ( I really do need to get out more or a hobby lol) ...but the main point here is the dam things should not fail that quick in the first place

If you want long-term reliability coupled with good performance forget the stuff pimped to the "extreme off-road" bling-bling market and look instead at the boring-looking-but-with-decent-heritage stuff.

Bilstein; Koni; De Carbon and Armstrong-Girling.

They don't come with odd paint-jobs or colour-co-ordinated bellows-sets; [OK, so some Koni stuff is bright orange and some Bilstein stuff's yellow...]

Truth is, it's often hard to separate the "it's expensive because it's good" from the "it's expensive because it's a fashion-item". Looking to see who has the flashiest and splashiest adverts in the off-roader press is a good start. True quality rarely needs to advertise.

I fitted a set of gas Bilsteins to my 90TD5 a couple of years back, having had good experiences with Bilsteins on the old Ford Escort rally-cars in the early 1980s. Not cheap, but damned good at taming the wallow-and-snake thing when towing.

Where are they failing ? If it's losing fluid in presuming the seal around the damper rod ?

I'm also wondering if there is something in your setup that's causing it to happen .... Doing the bushes too tight, or something out of alignment, or a combination of both ?

It just seems that you must be experiencing a failure rate way above the norm.... ?

I wonder if they're bottoming on full suspension-compression, and bending the piston-rod?

Well Besides the 2"+ lift kit I have the polly bush kit with extended bump stops, extended brake pipes, and me galvo chassis but else every thing else is standard .......the first two were drivers side this time was passanger side ....The first two just had a small drip of the bottom of the shock and some oil in the cup seat the shock sits in this time it looks like it has exploded I went out to check the sender seal on my new fuel tank thats just been fitted and saw a huge pool of oil under the shock and the whole shock is coverd in oil. I have considerd the new Bilstien ones as there all silver so would go with me colour scheame

Op, afraid I can't help you out with the shocks. But you may want to look at SOGA.

A product should last for a 'reasonable' amount of time/use. If Terrafirma are happy to claim their products are only designed to last on average less than a year and 4000 miles of normal road use, then that's fine. If not they should be replacing these FOC.

Well 4x4 M&M who the original kit came from I phoned them up and asked if this was normal the gent was very helpfull and said NOPE asked for pics of my Landy and its chassis to try and work it all outso will wait and see......Still no reply from Terafirma tho ...........Good to see good after sales custermer service is alive and kicking .....NOT

Its funney how some companies/buisniess will bend over backwards to help you and others not a chance

Engine watch dog is illuminated RED all my extra dials and main dashdials Ive changed to blue illumination. I contacted them in Auss and asked if I could have a blue LED display instead of red .....Sure of course we can do that no problem

Mota Lita....I wanted a speacial made boss/wheel adaptation and wanted a pacific leather in my own colour leather swen on the wheel.......Sure yes we can do that no problem

Carling Switches ......well it goe's on and on

But other companies so un helpfull ...all most blunt and rude if you ask a request and you just think how are they still in buisness and sod ya Ill spend my money some where else.............

I have something to add to this, after showing this thread to my supplier last night he has given me a 50,000Km ni quibble warranty on the pro sport I ordered with him, and yes it was 50,000Kms and not any time frame of yrs or months.

So on my side customer service seems to be well up and above the rest ;)

Hay if he is giving that sort of garantee .........its cheaper for me to buy 2 back shocks from your guy and have them shipped over especialy at £29 each so £58 for two back shocks and even with postage on top (cant be that much) Im on a winner with a 50,000Km garantee even with return shiping costs if fails again

True but not as in your face as four bloody great yellow shocks would be all so got black axle cases and mud flaps......... 90% blue and silver with a hint or orange pluss if you look close the stainless blue coverd brake pipe has a orange makers tab round it so it matches PMSL

Well if Nigelw surplier is giving him a 50 thousend Killometers garantee I must have some thing wrong some where but no a clue what ......I dont off road but do enjoy driving my landy and on road and every now and then enjoyI throwing it about and drive it hard and fast I tend to think Im Jenson Button in a F1 car with it lol hiting every apex pushing to the max round the corners but still thats nothing to the ponding off roading would do to them ........It a puzzle

I suspect you have something more fundamental wong with the setup, i.e. shocks bottoming or topping out -remember going over that crest in a road fast, or hitting a pothole can have quite an impact, and with road speeds being higher could be more than off-road.
