muddy
Nothing too flash going on here just trying to bring another money pit up to scratch. I went to an estate one day to see what parts were required to fix his 6410 after backing the combine in it and I spotted this sat in the corner. After donning rose tinted glasses I wandered over for a gander sat in it made some brum brum type noises and mentioned to the chap I'd always fancied one. ( Mrs will bought me the Lego technic one for chrimbo a few years ago which kept me occupied over chrimbo). Fast forward a month and I had been back managed to get it running to find the clutch seized and struck a deal to buy it. Gratuitous oh lord he has no idea what's about to hit him kind of shot Once I had it back at work some casual drifting and left foot braking unseized the clutch and got the ball rolling. Fuel leak off pipes where pissing out, the water pump bearings had collapsed and there were some major air leaks meaning 4wd/difflocks couldn't be tested, not to mention the cab felt like it could drop off at any moment. muddy
Several metres of air pipe and a few new fittings later ( luckily the autolube ferrules we keep at work fit the merc screw fittings) meant I could test the 4wd and difflocks, thankfully they appear to work as expected. Unbelievably it will hold air for weeks dropping only a couple of bar. Next on the list was a waterpump this was ordered from kramp who 4 weeks into their 3-6 week lead time changed to 4 months+, inbetween this I had sourced some cab mounts and removed the deisel tank to spruce it up and re pipe the fuel system. Along with this I found there were no fuel filters in it so two filters and a sedimenter were fitted. Then I thought it better have some lights and tempary mudguards so this was the next chapter. stuck
I have an U1700 money pit. Let's not go there!
muddy
Next was the front lights, as some of you may recall from my dimming LEDs thread I thought of a few options but in the end settled on some old wipac crystals retrieved from a mates 90. I bought some new bowls and these dropped perfectly into the holes just required some different fixing holes drilling. I still need some chrome or preferably black bezels for these if anyone has some, I pressume this is where they fix at the base. The sidelight and indicator unit are £55 each wich is way out of my price range. The screws holding the lense on fix into the internals and these broke up when trying to remove them to replace the bulbs. so I bent up some Ali to end up with these The sidelights are smart, the indicator could be better from the front however for the amount it's gonna be used this will do for now with possibly a mod later on. missingsid
Lucky/unlucky bugger (delete as applicable)! Serious man toy envy! Though I won't part with my S1 I have been investigating a Mog ever since seeing a road going sub 68 or 83" wheelbase In Cumbria. I use to think 80" S1's were cute! You have not shown your wifes comment on it yet!! Marc with green eyes.
landroversforever
OOOOO I like that. I've always fancied a Mog in my 'bucket garage'.
muddy
So by now I had re-ordered a water pump off ebay and fitted it (surprisingly simple and all the bolts just undid) along with a yorkshire spec thermostat. I had also changed the engine oil and filter, hub oils and axle oils and checked the gearbox level. It was protected against frost, it had lights, mudguards, oil in the right places, some grease was pumped, the logbook had arrived I had taxed and insured it and it had some air in the tyres. It was time to take it for a run. http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i177/Mudmagnet/th_VIDEO0063_01.mp4 This video is actually the second run when I had come down from the excitement of driving a slightly untested vehicle in the dark before the rest of the guys got to work without an engine cover- talk about loud! Coming back down the slope in the vid it topped out at 52mph. This was just before bonfire night and it was decided I would try and take it home on the Saturday, about 25miles. I chucked some tools in the cab, oils, water and a battery to go on the mrs' disco and set off. It was going ok until I stopped after about 8 miles to find the front hub oils pissing out into the steering knuckles. I pressed on and made it home, fitted the battery and went upto the workshop to pump some power harrow grease into the hubs hoping this would stop the leakage ( land rovers one shot has learned me how to fix stuff proppa like ) unfortunately even this wouldn't stay in the hubs although I put enough in to get me back to work. Setting off at 5.35am on the Monday it only took me 5mins more than the van takes and I wasn't really pushing it. At least it gave the ears time to recover! Will. muddy
We're nearly up to date. I got some hub seals, axle end seals and a handbrake cable ( and some tips on how to do the job) from the dealers ( very few aftermarket parts available ) On Saturday I set too and stripped the offside hub down, all was going well until I got to the half shaft, the four cups I've removed here disn't have one needle roller to share between them. I can't beleive it ran so smoothly without the faintest click, crack rumble or notion of knackeredness. Bad times...... Will.
muddy
After some ringing around today I can get new cups with rollers for about £30 each, this is looking like the cheapest way to go as a new cross ( letterbox, pin and four cups) is £327 each and there's two in that pic. The pins on the letterbox have hardly ovalled ~.8mm so I'm hoping the cups will run ok, it's not going to be used a great deal. The other option is to speedy sleeve the pins, anyone got a good link to speedy sleeve sizes? The wear ring for the portal input seal is grooved and cracked so James (200tdimorgan) will hopefully be machining me a new one Tonight I have been doing some CAD mocking up a battered box cover and a bracket for the isolater switch. Cynic-al
The skf website and simply bearing have the speedi sleeves. I bought mine from rs as they were the cheapest buy usefully the rs site doesn't give the sizes so you have to look the part number up elsewhere first. That looks like great fun, good luck! Daan
Nice mog. Do you have a particular goal in mind for it or is it a 'because I can' thing?
muddy
It's a because I can thing really, short term plans are: Sort front hub leaks Jam passenger side window shut Try and get the heater motor motoring Fit a rear body I have Fit some led work lamps I have Sort some kind of tow hitch. Ultimately I would like a pick up hitch but this is not all that easy. Long term it's all a little dreamy but: Stack exhaust Front PTO shaft Hydraulics Cab off repair work Maybe a rear linkage Shotblast wheels and paint and new tyres. Waiting for these cups..... Will. muddy
Thanks for the comments. It certainly put a smile on my face driving it, I'm just looking forward to getting it to a better standard where I'm not concerned about it breaking down or some overlooked component wearing unecacessarly costing me hundreds. I went to see James for him to make me a new wear ring only to find that the previous fixer has found a generic hub seal with the correct OD and turned the shim to match its larger ID so with the correct merc seals ( only about £12) the ring is not needed. I took some CAD with me and he kindly knocked up this battery isolater bracket whilst I put a new cross in his prop, couldn't help comparing the prop to the half shaft. He also folded some tin that I managed to stick together to make a new battery box lid, genuine ones seem few and far between and either rotten or ££££££££ I'll have to update this later the photo bucket app isn't working and it won't select the tags on thier site. ( damn ipad!) Will.
muddy
And installed before paint. I picked up the genuine Mercedes uj cups first thing Saturday morning thinking I could have the O/S hub back together yesterday. Unfortunately it's not gone quite to plan. The cups are too deep, and I was not a happy bunny. I'm going have to have a rethink and fairly quickly. If I can find some needle rollers and seals I may try and rejuvenate my existing cups. Any suggestions gratefully received, I'm going to try dunning and Fairbanks again tommoro. And as abit of a chill out I repared the drivers side step, it had been caught on something and bent down and torn open so I straightened and welded back together. Hopefully it will patina nicely in the winter wheather. Will.
muddy
Whilst waiting on cups I thought I'd try and get the heater looked at. If I do manage to get out in the snow then some demisting ability would be good, being sat next to the engine adds plenty of heat. After some wiggle ing and power ing up the motor directly it's come to life, the motor looks fairly sealed so I think I'll leave it be and was planning on just renewing the wiring inside and some fresh solder chucked about ect. Anybody have any suggestions? Will.

muddy
Does anybody know of a bottom entry pinch screw hold blade fuse box? Anything from 4 to 10 fuses, or do I need go for spade terminals? Will.
LandyManLuke
If you went with spade terminals, you could use one of these? http://www.polevolt.co.uk/acatalog/info_FBB8U.html
landroversforever
VWP do a nice looking one with two separate banks of fuses and an earth bus? All ring terminals I think.
muddy
I've had a better look this morning and I'm barking up the wrong tree entirely. I need a surface mount and I could use spade terminals I was just trying to keep the modifyability of the screw in terminals. Heater is painted and back in, air filter box painted and a new filter has arrived. Need to address the slight wiring issue at the back of the alternator. Then I can get the alternator back on and filter back in. Hopefully by then the uj cups Will have arrived and I can get it back together and crack on with the other side. Will. LandyManLuke
This gives you 12 fuses, if required, but it's longer. There are shorter ones available - 8 and 10 fuses. http://www.polevolt.co.uk/acatalog/info_LFB12.html
