elmscroft
Getting Series 2 back on the road.Few jobs to do: 1: The gauze soldered on the end of the fuel pick up pipe, in the petrol tank has seen better days any suggestions for better alternative? 2: Headlamps always seem dim. Advisory's on several MoT's changed units to Sealed Beams, but no better. Could it be wiring? All new, but homemade.
Boydie
Have a look at the fuse holder, possibly glass if the wiring is as per original, the four copper "tangs" can get corroded and slack giving a drop in voltage.
GW8IZR
a good source of stainless steel gauze for the fuel pick up is a tea strainer from tesco / asda etc. for the very small piece you need its as cheap and convenient as buying the raw material. I used a crimp fuel clamp to secure.
secondjeremy
Could be that nothing is better than your existing fuel tank gauze. Its common to run without them. If your Series land Rover is wired as standard its unlikely that the fuse could be the cause of problems as the lights are unfused. Usual culprits are bad earth - and corrosion between the bulb holder cap and the lens unit. The bulb circuit is from one of the solder terminals on the base to the cap which must therefor be earthed. Jon White
I got a repro fuel gauze recently off of eBay. Someone one there has had them reproduced. Jon
Paul Woodward
I've used these on quite a few cars when the original gauze has rotted away, just pushes on the end of a 5/16" or 8mm pipe; PRC2476
tacr2man
If you have dim lights then you need to relay them , as its probably down to voltage drop thru the old system, both in the wiring , and all the contact points , switch , dipswitch, push connectors . Use nice big wire and a 70 amp relay on each circuit , and just use the old circuit as a switch circuit for the relays. .
Snagger
The gauze was added because these cars were designed to run on dirty fuel and be replenished in grotty conditions in the third world. US fuel should be clean enough, though a one-off drain of the tank to get rid of any sediment wouldn't hurt on these old vehicles.

I'm thinking of fusing the last missing stuff.
Gazzar
Ye Gods Man! The series 3 had four fuses (three of which were wired in). The previous model only had one fuse. It was a huge leap forward. Seriously, it's daft, fit the relays and remote fuse boxes, and crystal headlights. Decent lighting isn't an option, it's a requirement. Now, if only the heater worked so I could see out! HoggyN
US fuel should be clean enough, Am I missing something? I assumed that the OP's location was Swindon, Wilts.
