reb78
I cant figure out why i cant stop this. I've tried two filler caps and a new filler neck and it is still leaking. Any ideas?
V8 Freak
Stop putting fuel in? It looks like pressure building up and forcing it's way past the seal or air vent in the caps..... But I can't see why a new cap didn't sort it !!
miketomcat
Check the breather is clear there should be a small black plastic tube some where on the top of the tank. Failing that a new filler neck maybe in order. Mike
western
My 110 does the same even with a clear breather hose & vented fuel cap. But only when I fill half way up the filler neck, with fuel level below the neck bottom fuel doesn't get pulled out.
dailysleaze
Mine did this. I stopped filling at 1 click instead of 3 clicks, which helped a bit.
C18RCH
Mine did this. Like you, I tried everything. The only thing that worked was only half filling the tank. I figured it was because the filler neck was pitted at the point where the seal contacts it. I've just (this week) fitted a TD5 plastic filler neck and cap to see if it works. Once I've filled the tank up I'll let you know if it has worked. It was a fairly easy mod. All I needed was a step down (20mm to 14mm) pipe bayonet fitting: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361002248732?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT because the return pipe on a TD5 is slightly larger, and then I fabricated a bracket where it bolts to the tub. The actual main delivery pipe needscutting down in length but is the right diameter.
reb78
Be good to hear how you get on with the TD5 neck. Did this need a new cap as well? I hate the mess the current setup is making of the back of my 110, not to mention the waste!
western
I hate the Td5 filler cap, needs the key in it as you remove/refit the cap.
reb78
I hate the Td5 filler cap, needs the key in it as you remove/refit the cap. I do that with my current one anyway!
western
but the existing cap only needs to be turned half a turn at the most, Td5 has to be unscrewed/screwed on more than 1 full turn.
Hazza
I've just (this week) fitted a TD5 plastic filler neck and cap to see if it works. Once I've filled the tank up I'll let you know if it has worked. It was a fairly easy mod. I did the same on my 110, just be aware that the tank has no breather so you might find (as I did) that it develops either massive negative or massive positive pressure! I had to fix a breather into the Filler neck using a push fit bulkhead fitting.
miketomcat
Hazza and western fit a discovery 1 cap there the same thread but no key and they have a 1/4 turn vented/unvented facility built into the cap. Mike
V8 Freak
I hate the Td5 filler cap, needs the key in it as you remove/refit the cap. No it doesn't.. I un-lock mine and remove the key before taking the filler cap off....

Mike Not sure I'd risk not having a locking cap...i know the tank is easy to drain but this would make it that but easier to do subtly! Hazza
No it doesn't.. I un-lock mine and remove the key before taking the filler cap off.... Agreed, no key needed here either
Mo Murphy
No it doesn't.. I un-lock mine and remove the key before taking the filler cap off....Mine is the same as that too. Remove key before unscrewing. Mo
V8 Freak
If you go for the Carlos Vandango - Super-dooper go fast version with thing attached.... You won't leave it on your spare wheel carrier up a mountain in Italy and lose it either.....

Don't know about the key, haven't had to fill it up yet since I did it.
C18RCH
Brimmed it this morning on the way into work. Gave it some boot around the corners for good measure. Not a drop, the mod seems to be working so far.
reb78
sounds promising! What breather system do you have on your tank? On mine, the breather is through the cap, but sounds like the TD5 uses a different system and that you have an alternative already in place? C18RCH
My tanks has a separate breather pipe at the front right corner. I have one of the extended wading kit breathers off ebay fitted to it: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Defender-Wading-Kit-ORANGE-V8-Engine-Gearboxs-and-Axles-/371250364168?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&fits=Model%3ADefender&hash=item56703eff08
reb78
Just resurrecting this from earlier this year. Cackshifter on another thread has mentioned that the Genuine caps are the only ones he has found to seal properly. I get two part numbers for this on searching - RTC4740 and STC4072. I think the latter supersedes RTC4740. Does this mean that there is no difference between them as parts are available under both numbers on LRDIRECT? Scotts90
Britcar is quite good for this type of information. Yes, STC4072 is the direct replacement for RTC4740 http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/419684/5497/superceded_by_stc4072
cackshifter
...stc4072 was the gen part I got from lrdiect.
tweetyduck
You should see mine. The filler tube is almost level with the top of the tank ! Even the lorry driver who delivered it ended up with his truck bed wet...... At least its the only thing that leaks at the moment. So i'm thankfull for small mercies.
