  1. It looks like the surface hardening has failed , is that the only one Neil? I'd be inclined to replace all with genuine anyway and do several oil and filter changes in the next few months and fit a magnetic sump plug too . cheers Steveb
  2. Indeed , and Vulcanbomber's offer to machine is hard to resist too , this is an interesting retro project for sure cheers Steveb
  3. What about using something that's already nearly the right shape , what crossed my mind is the inner driveshaft housing (tracta joint ) off a front wheel drive 3.5t van , some are already fluted on the outside , and strong enough too I'd wager . Not only that but you could use the bearings and spline/coupling inside to the diff to hook up to the WD box. ...Having said that some lovely machining from VB would be nice too cheers Steveb
  4. Very true Mike , I've had a failed thrust arm before , either way it's time to separate the engine and box ,which is not a bad thing when taking on a part finished project cheers Steveb
  5. Yep I'd agree that recess is there to stake the threaded studs on series 1 /2 /2a , there is a part no on the second hub , anything on the first one ? cheers Steveb
  6. The boss for the first motion shaft will be against the flywheel bringing the gearbox side surface of the drive plate further from the flywheel forcing the release bearing back and the slave piston into the slave cyl. Obviously the flywheel side will not be in contact but the boss is . cheers Steveb
  7. If the drive plate is in backwards it means the pressure plate fingers will be further towards the flywheel , hence pushrod all the way in . It really does sound like it's in the wrong way round cheers Steveb
  8. ...me too , including more than one Unimog ............ If It's dry and secure and not costing an arm and a leg to store it just mothball it and get on with what you are doing . It's not like you are an old git like me who still hasn't got control of it cheers Steveb
  9. Working in the garage/driveway on your own , it's easier to take the engine out to sort it out I'd say - if you have a crane or can hire one . cheers Steveb
  10. Yep I'd agree , it happens ... no consolation I know but that is what it sounds like cheers Steveb
  11. If the pins locate correctly in the crank and IP then all should be good , not sure when yours was last done , but it may be worth checking when you have got the stem seal fitting sorted out if it is still smoking on cold start up . It's important when doing the timing when fitting a new belt to slacken the three bolts holding the pulley to the IP hub to allow precise timing when pinned . cheers Steveb
  12. Another cause of blue smoke is slightly retarded timing of the injector pump . Steveb
  13. surely running on three cylinders would be noticeable ? Both in performance and uneven tickover and running . Steveb
  14. Check the sliding joints in the props too Nigel , when they get stiff/seize it can show as juddering vibrations cheers Steveb
  15. Yeah , that handbrake drag judder/knock can sound quite alarming , it also happens when there is oil on the shoes . Do you have the wading bung in the flywheel housing Nigel ? oil vapour in there will cause judder too cheers Steveb
  16. Didn't know that Das , that's interesting . Now we need pics of the truck before it gets changed . The 2.6 in the SD1 was OHC I believe ? cheers Steveb
  17. When you say R6 , does that mean it's currently a 2.6 6cyl? If so the bell housing bolt pattern is different to the 2.25 engines . Swapping the bell housing is no biggy though . The other consideration is the gearbox is further back on the 2.6 iirc cheers Steveb
  18. If it's as clean and tidy underneath I reckon you have done well , nice looking D2 , Facelift the front and some BFG AT's I bet you are grinning cheers Steveb
  19. I stand by what I've said snagger , I think you should stop inferring my advice will destroy everyone's engine without a fan . I am not talking about driving up alpine hills . I have described my experience very clearly . You are deliberately being destructive in your comments and I really think you should stop doing it I have nothing further to say on this and as always , it is up to the op to take whatever is written on the internet their own way Steveb
  20. ........so you are saying the resistance on a piece of red hot wire in a coil is the same as when cold? The plugs are wired in series and are 3v +3v +3v +3v , the circuit runs through each plug and then to earth . It's much like a battery , each cell is 2v , so 6*2v gives the nominal 12v cheers Steveb
  21. ......well it's my experience over several years covering 12-15k a year , winching at P&P days as a marshall and also for other uses such as moving dead vehicles onto trailers etc . Towing 3.5t laden trailers at the legal limit and a 3000 mile trip to Poland on autobahns including 4 days green laning in the height of summer 30c ambient temp . All parts are std. , the rad was new 11 years ago and is brass and i'm running a 1.222 T/box and 235/85's . Poland was on 255/85 MT .On the return run from Gdansk area it was 10hrs and 530miles so not hanging around . Now mr snagger , I am under the impression that this forum is about Facts and Experience and that is exactly what I posted . I give the membership here at least enough credit for brains that the dashboard instruments can be correctly read........... Maybe you would be happier elsewhere? Or maybe think twice before throwing unfounded statements out in type eh peace be upon you Steveb
  22. Lets see some pic's spiker , I completely agree , dreaming about what you want is a good thing , it's one of the satisfying things about LR ownership , it can take you in so many different directions . Personally , I think D2's look good with decent AT's and nice subtle light guards and a nice raised air intake , but that's just my view cheers Steveb
  23. And by the time you have done all that you will have a clearer idea of your future together cheers Steveb
  24. Some pic's would definitely compliment this thread I love the 2 door Range Rover , it was truly innovative in design and was the start of the "SUV" genre At the right price I'd be interested in it Reggie ... cheers Steveb
  25. I have no fan at all , and have run like this for years , 200tdi engine and matching rad etc from a Disco . This is with an hydraulic pto and winch used for normal winching of loads and recovery . If the temp gauge does start to get above 1/4 towards middle a couple of minutes ticking over brings it down or turn the heater on and keep going . Ambient temp in the UK are nowhere near hot enough to worry about it from my experience cheers Steveb
