  1. Could be Mammoet was just doing the transport.
  2. Can confirm. My new car has a pre-heat function that works off the 400V plug-in hybrid battery. Heating the car from freezing to ~20°C takes more than the 1.7kW 220V charger can replenish, a good chunk of time, and about 4-5kWh from the battery. And that's on a modern, well-insulated car. A Defender would be... interesting, probably
  3. Yeah, that looks more like an age-related failure. Living in a hot climate probably doesn't help with that.
  4. Both - the RRC had a less than ideal coolant system layout with the header tank lower than the top of the block, so a huge pain in the behind to bleed. And then later with cracked heads/cracked block as well. The EGR sensor, indeed. A valve for bleeding there might be useful, yes. I wonder if some sort of "steam port" setup from there would be beneficial.
  5. Looking at it here: https://www.autoelectricalspares.co.uk/lucas-srb131-33258-6ra-12v-relay-2242-p.asp That seems to just be a regular 4-pin relay, in a different form. So might be worth upgrading to a more modern style of relay and holder? Like this: https://www.vehiclewiringproducts.co.uk/c-219-relays-flasher-units/p-1297-12v-4-blade-30a-type-a https://www.vehiclewiringproducts.co.uk/c-52-fuse-boxes-fuses/c-248-modular-fuse-relay-housing-system/p-736-standard-relay-module
  6. I'm not so sure about that. It's been about a decade since I struggled with the cooling system on my 300TDi, but I remember there being a huge air bubble in the cylinder head (about where the extra sensor would go), that didn't affect the stock gauge nor the level sensor. An extra sensor probably would've shown something was wrong, at least. The only way I knew then was if there was no heat coming from the heater - then followed by the low coolant lamp IIRC.
  7. Yes, I've done it a few times. There are some *very* hard to reach spots. Last time I just had to fill in all of the valleys where the pipes come together, and I couldn't get in deep enough to actually weld up the holes 😕
  8. You'll also be hard pressed to find any that aren't full of holes.
  9. That's what I'll start calling it I've just been reading a bit on RAVE about how the later electronically controlled boxes work. They really are dirt simple, and it seems almost easier to just operate that one manually. There's 2 solenoids that control the gear selection, one solenoid that control the lockup, and one solenoid to control the line pressure. The difficult one is the line pressure, but that defaults to full pressure, so worst case you have some harsh shifts. There are some aftermarket controllers that would work as well (Haltech for one, which I'm still planning to use at some point - although I haven't collected it yet ).
  10. Endmill that's the diameter of the cutouts, and put it on a rotary table in the mill?
  11. Will be interesting to follow A TDi dragging a Pulse up Norwegian mountains sounds... moderately painful. So I hope the 2.8 improves on that enough.
  12. Yeah, sucks Especially strange that the thermostat seems alright... Still should've let me come get you!
  13. Would gouging rods be a more accessible solution for rough cutting maybe?
  14. Looking at that now, it looks fairly similar to regular heavy recovery winch sheaves. Like in this picture: In fact, this looks like pretty much the same thing: https://wintech-winches.com/swivel-fairleads/
  15. Maybe he's making a lightweight workbench for doing electrical work on?
  16. Just to give a bit of perspective, to have a "car" Grenadier as a company car here in Belgium, I ran the BIK calculation tool real quick: A Fieldmaster with the petrol engine, £69000 (€78000 EUR) and 326g CO2 (!), would result in a BIK of €12000 per year! Registering it as commercial in your business the rules are a bit more vague, but generally they say you should calculate BIK as a percentage based on actual private/professional use, calculated from the actual cost of the vehicle (or, more accurately, actual benefit incurred from using the vehicle...). Not quite as easy to throw a number at, but unless you actually use it 100% for a business you're probably still looking at around half of those car numbers. Oh, and all that on top of a yearly tax of €1200, and a one-time registration tax of €12000. They should probably sell it with a bottle of lube here.
  17. Read: suck it peasants, we just needed your pre-orders for crowdfunding a pipe dream. Same reason the new Defender is affordable/not-a-stupid-financial-decision only for a very select few here in Belgium. Too expensive as a personal car, not fiscally interesting enough as a company car.
  18. There's still a perfectly usable button to trigger a manual wipe. And an off setting. Just a nicer interval that you don't have to babysit.
  19. Should be a straight line from the switch pack to the BeCM. You could try checking the earth coming into the switch pack. And measure through the wires going between the switch pack and the BeCM.
  20. And for the doubters: you'll understand constant headlight use when you live somewhere where the sun is very low in the sky for a good part of the year, and easily obscures vehicles. Having the lights on does actually help with that a lot.
  21. DRLs are ok for Swedish law, for the record. Doesn't need to be headlights anymore. I put brighter bulbs into my sidelights so I could use them as DRLs. Actually noticeably reduces the invisibility cloak my P38 seems to come with.
  22. Yes. I remember a particular drive from Belgium to Sweden where we were on the outskirts of a rain storm the whole time. I think I put more wear on the little wiper interval switch in one day than I had in 10 years. I would've killed for automatic wipers that day. And was, in fact, thinking of how I could retrofit them... My biggest gripe with modern cars are the "safety" systems, that are dangerous as hell. Lane assist that tries to throw you into a snow bank, adaptive cruise that can't be disabled, automatic collision avoidance that's almost guaranteed to get you into an accident at some point, ... Just let me drive the freaking car!
